Now I'm going to read the text
again from John chapter 1, verse 12. But as many as received him,
as many as received him, to them gave he the privilege or the
right to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on
His name. Now the way of salvation is revealed
in the Word of God in the plainest terms. There's no doubt about
how God saves sinners. It's revealed in His Word from
Genesis to Revelation in the plainest terms. And yet there's
no truth in God's about which there's more error than the way
of salvation. If you were to stop a dozen people
tomorrow and ask each one of them, how is a sinner saved? There's a possibility that you
would get about a dozen different answers. Now the problem is not
with the scriptures. That's not the problem. The way
of salvation in God's Word is plain. The problem is with man. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4
verse 3, if our gospel, and that's the way of salvation, our gospel,
if our gospel be hid, unknown, it is hid to those who are lost,
in whom the God of this world hath blinded their minds, lest
the light of the glorious gospel of Christ should shine unto them,
and they should be saved. They're blinded. And not only
are they blinded, but their understanding is perverted. Their understanding
is marred. He said, the natural man receiveth
not or understandeth not the things of God. They're foolishness
to him, and neither can he know them because they're spiritually
understood. So the way of salvation is revealed
in God's Word. The way that God saves sinners,
the way that God redeems the lost, it's clear. It's in the
plainest terms. And yet more error has been spoken
about this truth than any other truth of God's Word. And the
problem's not with the Scriptures. Men say, we do not understand,
and they're exactly right. They do not understand. They
do not understand because they're trying to see spiritual truth
with natural eyes. They're trying to understand
spiritual truth with natural hearts, and it can't be done. Even those who know what faith
is, personally and experimentally, even those who've been redeemed
by the blood of Christ, even those to whom faith has been
given, even those who have exercised faith, do not find it easy to
define. Let me ask you today. Suppose
my task were to fall to you. Suppose you were here in my place.
I know theoretically many of you think you could do a better
job, but let me ask you this. If you were standing here this
morning, how would you define salvation? Suppose the burden
was upon you to tell men how to be saved. Suppose the burden
were upon you to rightly divide this book today. Suppose the
burden fell upon you to instruct men in the way of life. How would
you do it? How would you define faith? How
would you define salvation? Sure, it's one of the simplest
things in the world, but it's the most difficult to define.
It's one of the simplest truths in the Word, but it's difficult
to define. It's difficult to present to
someone else. It's difficult to explain. And
I tremble when I approach the subject of prayer, or the subject
of love, or the subject of faith, because all three are impossible. to define to a natural heart,
to an unsaved, unredeemed, unregenerated natural man. He can't understand
it, he can't see it, he can't enter into it. He can profess
it, he can speak it with his lips, but he cannot understand
it with his heart. And another thing that I tremble,
lest one phase of faith be exaggerated and another neglected. That's
one of our greatest problems. So in defining this subject today,
what is faith? What is the way of salvation?
I have selected five thoughts on this subject. Now if these
divisions cannot define faith for you, it can't be defined
for you. If these divisions cannot give
you the answer, it can't be given. That's how certain I am. Not
because I can identify it, but these are the important divisions
These are the questions, if they are faithfully answered, will
give you the definition of faith and the way of salvation. For
example, here they are. Listen. First of all, the object
of faith. The object of faith. Secondly,
the source of faith. Where does it come from? Thirdly,
the ground of faith. On what ground are you exhorted
to believe? In the fourth place, the results
of faith. And then, in the fifth place,
The evidence of faith. The evidence of faith. Now keep
in mind those five things. Now first of all, let's look
at the object of faith. The object of faith. And here's
where I think 90% of the preachers in this world are missing the
message of Christ and the message of the gospel. First of all,
the object of faith. I am told in God's Word to believe. And I imagine if many of you
were up here this morning, you'd say, well, believe on Christ.
Believe what about Christ? Do you just believe? Do you just
believe like you believe that light shining? Is that what we
believe? What am I to believe? I'm told
to believe, all right. What am I to believe? Just exactly
what am I to believe? I'm told in God's Word to look.
Suppose you define looking for me. To whom am I to look? I am
told in God's word to trust, just trust the Lord, that's what
people say, just trust the Lord. What and whom do I trust, and
for what do I trust, and how do I trust? Now let's turn first
of all to John 3, verse 36. I am told to believe. In whom? In what? In John 3, verse 36, listen to
the word of God, Now he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting
life. He that believeth not the Son
shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him." All right,
the first thing that we can bring this down to is this. I am to
believe on the Son. I am to believe on Jesus Christ. I am to exercise faith in one
person, in the Lord Jesus Christ. Now I know the salvation of our
souls is the work of the Trinity. I know we cannot be saved without
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. I know that the Father
hath chosen, and the Son hath redeemed, and the Holy Spirit
hath to reveal Christ. And I can no more be saved without
the Father than I can without the Son, and I can no more be
saved without the Son than I can be saved without the Holy Spirit.
But yet the first and immediate object of faith is not the Father. is not the Holy Spirit. The object
of faith, according to this book, is the Son. He, look at it again,
"...he that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life." It
doesn't say, "...he that believeth on the Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit." It says, "...he that believeth on the Son," and further
it declares, "...and he that believeth not the Son," whatever
he believes about the Father. whatever he holds concerning
the Holy Spirit. He that believeth not the Son
shall not see life. So this is the object of faith,
Jesus Christ the Lord. I know also that true faith produces
good works. James says, show me your faith
without your works, and I'll show you my faith by my works. And I know that saving faith
produces good works. And he who looks to his works,
I know this, will perish. Well, the scripture says, by
the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Christ is
the object of faith. Not the Father, not the Holy
Spirit, and not the works and deeds of the law. These are not
the objects of faith. And then I know this, I know
that salvation is an experience. Isaiah said, thou wilt keep him
in perfect peace. whose mind is stayed on thee."
I know that salvation is an experience of peace. It is an experience
of joy. But any man who looks to his
experience will perish. Any person who depends upon his
feelings will perish. Romans 5 says, there is peace. We have peace with God through
our Lord Jesus Christ, but peace is a result of looking to Christ. So the object of faith, first
of all, the object of faith is not the Father, it is not the
Spirit, it is not the Word, it is not works, it is not the law,
it is not experience, it is not feeling, it is not doctrine,
it is not the covenant, it is not a decision. The object of
faith, first of all, is the Son of God, Jesus Christ, and Christ
alone. Saving faith looks to the Christ
of the Scripture. All right, what about the Christ
of the Scripture? First of all, I look to Him and
believe on Him as very God of very God. John said, In the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Jesus Christ, who saves my soul. Jesus Christ, in whom I trust,
Jesus Christ, in whom I believe, Jesus Christ, to whom I look,
is not a mere man, he's not a mere martyr, he's not a defeated reformer,
he is God Almighty. God was incarnate in human flesh. Look down here at verse 14, "...and
the Word, who was with God and was God, and the Word was made
f-l-e-s-h, flesh, and dwelt right here among us. I believe in Him
as God, and I believe in Him as flesh, as a man." I believe
the wondrous story of incarnation. I believe the glorious gospel
that was proclaimed to the shepherds on that Judean hillside unto
you is born in the city of David a Savior who is none other born
of woman, born under the law, made of the flesh, none other
than the Son of God. What do I believe about him?
I believe Jesus Christ is God Almighty. I believe Jesus Christ
is God incarnate. I believe that Jesus Christ is
our righteousness. That in the flesh, as a man,
he met the law, he fulfilled it, he obeyed it in every jot
and tittle. That he could look to the Father
and hear the Father say, I'm well pleased with thee. He could
look to man and say, which of you convinces me of sin? He could
look to the law and say, I have kept it in every jot and tittle.
We look to Jesus Christ, we trust in Jesus Christ, we believe in
Jesus Christ as our crucified Lamb, the Lamb of God. our sin offering. We look to
Jesus Christ, our Lord, as victorious over the grave, rising again,
having paid our debt and being released from all of it. We look
to Him at the right hand of God as our High Priest, as our Mediator,
ever living to make intercession for us. We look to Him as Isaiah
did, being wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, the
chastisement of our peace laid upon Him, and through his stripes
being healed. What is saving faith? It is looking
to the Son. What is saving faith? It is believing
in the Son. What is saving faith? It is trusting
in the Son, the Son of God, who is God. the Son of Man who is
man, the Son of Righteousness who is perfect, the Lamb of God
who died, the risen Justifier, the seated Mediator, and the
reigning King, and the coming Lion of Judah. That's how we
look to Him. And saving faith is not in a
covenant, it's in a person. Saving faith is not in a law,
it's in a person. Saving faith is not in an experience,
it's in a person. Saving faith is not in a feeling,
an ordinance, or the faithfulness of man. It is in a person, Jesus
Christ. That's where it is. My faith
hath found a resting place, not in device nor creed. I trust,
I believe, I receive the ever-living One. His wounds for me shall
plead. Enough for me that Jesus saves. That ends my fear and my doubt. A sinful soul, I came to him. I didn't come to the church,
I came to him. I didn't come to the law, I came
to him. I didn't come to experience,
I came to him. I didn't come to a doctrine,
I came to him. A sinful soul, I came to him. And he'll never cast me out. I need no other argument. I need
no other plea. It is enough that Jesus Christ
died on that cross. And if there on that cross, he
died for me. That's the object of faith, a
person. A person. You miss him, you'll
miss life. You miss him, you'll miss heaven. You miss him, you'll miss God. You miss him, you miss salvation. He is salvation. He is God. He is life. He is heaven. He's the object of faith. All
right? Secondly, the source of faith. Now, here's a threefold definition
of the source of faith. Now, listen to it. I'm talking
about where faith comes from. The source of faith. That's what
the word source means, where you get it. Where it comes from.
First of all, faith comes. Faith comes out of a need. Faith
is born of a need. Now this is the reason most people
don't have faith. Faith is born of a need. Faith
comes as a result of a need. No man ever looks to Christ. No man ever receives Christ. No man ever believes on Christ
until he's utterly and absolutely and completely aware of his need
for Christ. That's what our Lord said. The
world has no need for a physician. I have not come to call the righteous. I didn't come to do anything
for you, he said. I have come to call sinners. I have come to seek and to save
the lost. Jesus Christ is going to save
every lost person in this world. That's right. Think about it
now. He said that. He's going to save every lost
person in this world. The reason many are not going
to be saved is they are not, and never have been, and never
will be lost. L-O-S-T, lost. He's going to
save every sinner breathing. That's right. Every sinner breathing,
Christ is going to serve. Now if you're not saved, it's
because you're not a sinner. Find a sinner. A sinner is the
hardest thing in this world to find. I've met very few. One old Puritan
said, a sinner is a sacred thing. The Holy Ghost hath made him
so. Oh, you know some sinners, I'm sure. You know some. When a man comes to see his need,
that's when faith will be born. when he comes to see that he
is a sinner, that he no longer can find help in himself, he
can no longer find help in his religion, he can no longer find
help in his own experience, he can no longer find help in the
law, he has looked to all these things and found them impotent,
and he's shut up. to his inability, he's shut up
to his helplessness, he's shut up to his lost condition, he's
shut up to his nakedness and depravity, and when he's shut
up to that, he looks out and sees one ray of hope. Maybe,
maybe Jesus Christ will save him. Maybe Christ will save him. He's shut up to one hope. None
but Christ can do him any good. No preacher, no system of theology,
no denomination, no evangelist, no high-powered ecclesiastical
machine. Nobody can help him but Jesus
Christ. And if Christ doesn't help him,
he's doomed. That's where faith is born. It's
born out of the pit of despair. It's born out of the cesspool
of sin. It's born out of the total nakedness
of the human heart. It's born out of the helpless,
hopeless state in which the Holy Ghost brings a sinner. And that's
the second part of this question. What is the source of faith?
It's born out of need. Utter need. Lord, save me or
I perish. That's where it comes from. Lord,
if you will, you can make me whole. Lord, that I might see. Lord, nail to a cross, remember
me." That's where it's born. And then I'll tell you this,
it is only the work of the Holy Spirit that can bring a sinner
to that place. All the argument that men can
use, all of the logic that men can imagine, all of the beautiful
stories and illustrations that men can give, will never strip
a sinner. Only the Holy Ghost can strip
a sinner. That's the reason that old Puritan
said, a sinner is a sacred thing. The Holy Ghost hath made him
so. The Holy Ghost hath made him
so. How does a man know he's a sinner? How does a person reach
the state of despair, of helplessness, of sinnerhood, of hopelessness? How is a man driven to Christ
alone? How are the filthy rags of self-righteousness
ever snatched from the reluctant hands of a self-defending, self-justifying
sinner, huh? Only the Holy Ghost can disarm
him. Only the Holy Ghost can overcome
him. Only the Holy Ghost can defeat
him. Only the Holy Ghost can give
him eyes that see beyond this personal righteousness. Only the Holy Spirit. Salvation
by Christ, salvation by mercy, salvation by grace, is so utterly
disagreeable to the natural heart that men will never look to Christ
if they can keep from it. Men will never reach out and
cling to the cross if they can keep from it. Men will never
robe themselves in the righteousness of the Son if they can keep from
it. Only the Holy Ghost can do this. I remember old man Shelton, and
it didn't mean as much to me then as it does later on in this
life, used to say, if you miss Holy Spirit conviction, you'll
miss repentance. And if you miss repentance, you're
going to miss faith. And if you miss faith, you're
going to miss Christ. Because only the Holy Ghost can
show a person just what he is. Only the Holy Ghost can reveal
to a sinner that horrible, God-defying, God-hating, self-loving state
in which he is born and bred and which he lives by nature.
All right, here's the third part of this statement now. How is
it that some are brought to this place and others aren't? Faith,
the source of it, is born out of a hungry heart. It's born
from a naked soul. It's born from a helpless state. It's born out of need. And the
Holy Ghost is the only one that can show us that condition really
exists. It's there, but we don't see
it. And how is it that some do see it? How is it that some have
been humbled and others never have and never will be? How is
it that some have been stripped and broken and others never have
and never will be? How is it that some have had
all their foundations swept out from under them, swept out to
the sea of despair and despondency, and others still build on their
foundations of sin and will wait the judgment of God to be stripped?
How is it? I'll tell you how it is. It's
the gift of a sovereign God. He saves whom He pleases. And
a humble sinner will receive that, and a proud heart will
rebel against it. Our Lord Jesus Christ one day
lifted his eyes to heaven, and he said, I thank thee, Father,
Lord of heaven and earth. Thou hast hid these things from
the wise and the prudent, and thou hast revealed them to babes,
even so, Father, it seem good in thy sight. A bunch of religious
Pharisees came to him one day and said, if you're the Christ,
tell us plainly. Speak in language we can understand. We can't enter into what you're
saying. Tell us, he said, I told you.
But you don't believe. You don't believe because you're
not of my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. And they
follow me, and I give them eternal life. He said, all that my Father
giveth me, they'll come to me. All that my Father hath given
to me, they'll be broken by the Spirit. They'll be stripped of
their self-righteous rank. They'll be broken, and they'll
be brought to faith. All of them will, and they that
come I'll in no wise cast out. So the source of faith, the source
of faith is God's eternal grace. God's eternal grace that works
through his effectual, irresistible, invincible spirit to bring a
sinner to a broken heart, and thereby to faith in his Son.
Now the third question. What is the ground of faith?
The ground of faith. You know, I preach up here this
morning that if you'll believe on Christ, God will forgive you.
On what authority? How do you know that? I say that if you believe on
Christ, that He died for your sins and justifies you by His
death before God's law and before God's throne, on what authority? What right do you have to believe,
or do I have to believe? Well, the only answer you can
give is this. His word. His word. Scripture says, go ye into all
the world and preach the gospel to whom? Every creature. I'm one of those every creatures.
So the gospel's meant for me. Huh? Scripture says, though your
sins be as scarlet, I'll make them as white as snow. I'm one
of those whose sins are scarlet. The scripture says, coming to
me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, I'll give you rest.
I'm one of those who are tired and heavy laden. Scripture says,
whosoever will, let him take the water of life. Whosoever
is thirsty, let him take the water of life. I'm thirsty. I'm
thirsty. There is not a well, there's
not a, it can't be called a well, there's not a cistern in this
world that can satisfy any need of a human soul. Christ said,
you drink of this water, you have to keep on drinking, you're
never satisfied. But he said, he that drinketh
of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst. I'm thirsty. I'm thirsty. And I'm willing
And the reason why anyone will not take that water is because
of their own unwillingness. The ground of faith is his word.
He said it. He said it. Now, fourthly, the results of
faith. The object of faith is Christ
and Christ alone. Plus nothing, minus nothing.
The source of faith is a need. a need. The ground of faith is His Word.
Now, what's the results of faith? Let me give you this hurriedly.
Acts 16, 32 says, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. If you
can, if you can believe on Christ, you'll be saved. That's what
it says. That's what it says. If you can believe, if you can
savingly believe, you'll be saved. Saved from sin's penalty, saved
from sin's power, saved from sin's practice, and by God's
grace, saved from sin's presence. In John 3.18 it says, He that
believeth on the Son is not condemned if you can savingly believe on
Christ. Scripture says you'll never be
condemned, not now and not in the judgment. free from condemnation,
past, present, and future, if you can believe. What is the
result of faith? To them that believe on his name,
he gives them the right, the great and glorious right to be
a what? A son of God, if you can believe. God said you could be his son. He who believes, Acts 13, verse
39, is justified from all things from which the law could not
justify. Clothed in perfect holiness, innocent of all charges, made
righteous in the presence of God, he who believes, Christ
said, will never thirst. Eat my flesh and drink my blood,
you'll never hunger, never thirst. He who believes shall have, if
you can, everlasting life. He who believes, Acts 10, 43,
is forgiven of all sin. He who believes, Romans 9, 33,
will never be ashamed. Bold shall you stand in that
great day. For no one, anything, to your
charge can lay. My friend, do all you can for
the glory of Christ. Do it out of gratitude, do it
out of love, do it out of sincere affection. Do all you can for
the praise of His name and for the glory of His grace and for
the glory of His gospel. Go and give and witness and pray
and do all you can. But after you've done all you
can, throw it aside, forget it, dismiss it as worthless,
and turn your eyes on Christ, and look full into his wonderful
face, and receive him, and believe on him as your substitute and
as your sacrifice. That's what Paul said, born of
the tribe of Benjamin, circumcised at eight days, a Pharisee of
Pharisees, facing the natural Ten Commandments as they were
given at Sinai, blameless, exceeding many my equals, zealous for God. But I count all these things
but D-U-N-G, dumb. And you take all your preaching,
and all your witnessing, and all your giving, and all your
good work, and all your little prayers, and all your Bible reading,
and all of these things, and pile them in the middle of the
floor and set fire to them. They are worthless. They'll do
nothing but add to your condemnation if you trust them, if you believe
in them, if you find any satisfaction in them. Turn your back on them. and look to Christ as an empty-handed
beggar, and run to Christ as a naked sinner, and flee to Christ
as a hopeless rebel, and stand before the throne of God with
a rope around your neck, and cry, God, if you will, if you
can find it in your grace, if it's possible that there can
be mercy for the chief of sinners, Let thy mercy fall on me. You're
going to miss it if you're not careful. I'm warning you. God
never saved a righteous man yet. God never redeemed a righteous
man yet. God never took a good man to
heaven yet. Not according to his word. He
saved sinners. He saved sinners. Now last of
all, turn to 1 John 5. 1 John 5. Oh, how we hate to surrender
our righteousness. Oh, how we hate to surrender
our doctrines. Oh, how we hate to surrender
our religion. How hard that old man dies. How hard it is to stand hopeless
and helpless, identified with others, not me. I thank you,
God, I'm not like this person. I thank you I'm not. Oh, I'm
so thankful that I'm so holy. I tithe and I go to church and
I give to the poor. I'm so thankful. I'm not an extortioner,
I'm not an adulterer, I'm not unjust. I'm worthy of God's mercy. But there was one man in that
temple that morning who would not even lift his eyes to heaven,
he was such a sinner. And he just cried as he smote
on his breast, God, if you will, let your blood be propitiation
for me on the mercy seat. Let thy blood cleanse this guilty,
filthy chief of sinners And the Lord Jesus said, that fellow
went home saved. How about that? How about that? How about that? Now last of all, the evidence
of faith. I told you it's plain in God's
Word. The way of salvation is as clear
as the sun shining at twelve o'clock noon in a cloudless high
sky. But a blind man can't see it.
blinded by religion, blinded by self-righteousness, blinded
by tradition, blinded by doctrine, blinded by custom. Can't see
it. It's just as clear as a blast
of a trumpet in a mortuary at midnight with no other sound,
but the screaming and blaring of that horn But a dead man can't
hear it. Huh? He can't hear it. He can't hear it. The evidence
of faith, 1 John 5, verse 10, here it is, "...he that believeth
on the Son of God hath the witness in himself." Brother Mann, you think I'm saved?
No, I don't. If you have to ask me, I know
you're not. Only one person in here knows
whether or not these things I've said this morning apply to you,
and that's you. He that believeth on the Son
of God hath the witness in himself. No man knoweth the things of
a man save the spirit of the man which is in him. I don't
know. I don't know. He that believeth
on Christ, he that hath been brought by the Spirit of God
to that place of insufficiency and inability, he knows it. He
knows it. He that has been stripped of
all the veneer, he who has been laid bare before the searchlight
of God's holy law, he knows it. He is there when it happens.
He who has experienced the sweeping away of all his foundation till
he was hanging there over the gaping jaws of a hell of God's
wrath, moving up to meet him, he knows he's got the witness
in himself. He that has been laid bare at
Calvary and seen there the crucifixion of his substitute, of his Savior,
he who has looked with believing eyes to that cross, he knows
it. He doesn't have to go ask some preacher. He knows it. I've been to Calvary. Have you? I never travel far around the
world. I've never seen the thrills of
many sights unfurl. But I've taken a journey, the
journey of journeys for me, up Calvary's mountain. I've been
to Calvary. I can say I've seen the Lord. I've been to Calvary through
the witness of His Word. Each day at Calvary, is God's
Word unfolds that majestic scene. I died in Him. He was crucified
for me. I've been to Calvary. And 10,000 arguments presented
by the most eloquent of preachers, 10,000 arguments presented by
the most eloquent of people in favor of human merit, won't budge
me one inch, not one inch. I know what I am. Ten thousand
arguments by the most eloquent of mouths in favor of man's free
will won't move me. I know what I am. I know who God is. Do you? I've seen Him. A million arguments against the
complete sufficiency of Christ. The effectual work of the Savior. Ten million arguments. Even by
the angels of heaven, Paul said, won't move me. If any angel,
even an angel from heaven, preaches any other gospel than the gospel
of substitution, send him to hell, Paul said. That's where
he belongs. Let him be accursed. He won't
move me. I know there's no hope except in Christ's blood. I know
it. I know it. You know it? I'm tired of wishy-washy
people that have got no foundation. Take them. I'm tired of indecisive
people that don't know where they stand or what they believe.
He that believeth on the Son hath to witness in himself. And
all of the demons in hell can't move him. And all the angels
of heaven can't move him. And all the arguments of ten
million archers won't move him. He knows who saved him. He's got the witness in himself. A million arguments about our
works and our righteousness will not please that believer. He
knows that his righteousness is our filthy rags. He knows
it. He's been emptied of self and
filled with Christ. He took off the fig leaf apron
and put on the skin of Christ. And you're not going to take
that robe of righteousness off him and put that fig leaf back
on him? You'll have the worst fight on
your hands you've ever had in your life. He's done with that
Tommy Rod. His righteousness is Christ.
And he has the witness in himself. And all the subtle satanic insinuations
couldn't drive him from the gospel of God's grace because he is
aware of the subtlety of Satan. And
Christ said, as he warned him, he said, my child, Antichrist shall rise in the
last days and deceive the hearts of many. If it were possible,
if it were possible, the very elect. That's how subtle they
are. That's how satanic they are.
That's how divisive they are. But he said, my elect won't be
deceived. There may be one, there may be
two, there may be three. But all the forces of heaven
and hell can't move my elect. They have the witness in themselves. So blow, ye winds of heaven,
and rise, ye floods of earth, and thunder, ye storms of life,
I shall not be moved. Like a tree planted by the water,
the water of life, that bringeth forth its fruit in its season,
and its leaves shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall
prosper, the ungodly are not so. They're like the chaff. Every time a little wind blows,
it blows them away. Huh? I shall not be moved. That's the evidence of faith.
He that believeth on the Son hath the witness in himself,
and he'll challenge every force this side of heaven, anchored in the rock, and he
can't pull him loose. That's faith, and that's the
way of salvation. If you want to be satisfied with
anything less than that, you're welcome to it. But I want a divine
work, and I won't be satisfied with any less. A divine work. Our Father in Heaven, thank Thee
for the certainty, the immovable certainty of Thy Word. That's the ground of our faith.
He has said, I'll never leave you. I'll never forsake you,
therefore we can boldly say, The Lord is my helper, I shall
not fear what man shall do unto me." Our hope is anchored within the
veil where Christ our Lord in triumphant victory sits at thy
right hand.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
