Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. - Psalms 107:8-9
God is essentially good. All the time, in every way, God is good. The goodness which is ascribed unto God is peculiar only to Him; There is none good but one, that is, God (Mk 10:18). There is no being, created or uncreated, that is even close to being good compared to our God. As a matter of fact, we mere mortals have no idea of what this adjective means, when used to describe he who alone is good. Even those who have been quickened by his Spirit, have very little comprehension of the goodness of God.
We see and experience his goodness more clearly as he satisfies our longing soul and fills us with his goodness. But we believe he is good all the time, because he says he is good. To the unregenerate, God is believed to be good only when they are well and prospering in this world. When good things come their way, then they say, “God is good.” When the child of God is afflicted, suffering, and stripped of all his earthly possessions, he bows his heart before the throne of mercy and worships God, and glories in his good God. Our flesh may be ordained to suffer greatly while we are in this world, but our longing and hungry soul is ordained to be satisfied and filled with the goodness of God.
Truly God is good to Israel (Ps 73: 1).
