O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever. - Psalms 136:26

We are reminded no less than forty one times in the Bible that God’s mercy is everlasting—His mercy endureth for ever, and that because he is good. All men in this world, no matter what their status, live under God’s good providence. But God said of his mercy, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy (Ex 33:19).

Grace and mercy are inseparable and always sovereignly directed toward the elect of God, and only comes through the glorious person and redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Outside of Christ there is no mercy for sinful man. But thanks be unto God, in Christ there is mercy for evermore. As long as the Lamb is in the midst of the throne of God, reigning over us—as long as he who obtained our eternal redemption loves and makes intercession for us, there will be everlasting mercy even for the chief of sinners.

O give thanks unto the God of Heaven!
