John 10
Our Lord’s title of “Shepherd” is most endearing to the heart of the believer. In this title we can see all that he is, has done, and is doing for his people.
•They are his sheep, chosen in Him. I am the Good Shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine (Jn 10:14). According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4).
•He purchased them. He gave his life for the sheep. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep (Jn 10:11). Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood (Acts 20:28).
•He provides for them. The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want (Ps 23:1). But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Phil 4:19).
•He keeps and protects them. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me (Ps 23:4). My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand (Jn 10:27-28).
•Heloves the sheep. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep (Jn 10:15). Having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end (Jn 13:1).
