But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. - Romans 5:15
In preaching the Gospel we often use the term “free grace.” One reason for this is to distinguish the difference between God’s grace and how works-religion ignorantly defines grace. The difference is simple, grace and works. It is by our self-righteous works we are condemned. It is by his free grace we are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus (Rom 3:24). The free gift of grace is Jesus Christ and all we have in Him. The offence of disobedience by one man, Adam, brought the sentence of death upon all men.
The obedience of one man—Jesus Christ—in life and death, yields life for the dead. The Lord Jesus Christ and all the spiritual blessings his people have and enjoy in him are absolutely free! This one man, Jesus Christ lovingly, freely, efficaciously, graciously, perfectly, and eternally, gave himself in all respects and demands required by divine justice to God’s satisfaction, securing the salvation of his people without their aid or assistance. The offence has it’s work—death! The free gift has his work—LIFE!
