The album just told you, in track one, to be faithful in the little things. The very next question a faithful man asks is: but will I make it? What if I let go? Preserved in His Grace is the answer, and the answer is in the title. Not persevering - preserved. Persevering is a verb you do. Preserved is something done to you.
Every line of this song moves the security off of my grip and onto His. Chosen long before our first heartbeat. Before the stars were hung, His love already claimed. My keeping was settled before I existed - so it cannot now depend on the strength of a hold I did not even start. He is called the Surety here, and that is the exact right word: a Surety is the one who guarantees a debt He did not owe, so the outcome never rests on the debtor.
That is why this song sits second. You cannot spend a life in the small, unseen, faithful tasks if every one of them is a test you might fail off the edge of. The little things are safe to do because the big thing - whether you are kept - was never yours to do. Nothing pulls us from His saving ways. Run the quiet paths freely. The grip that matters is not yours.
