Break the Throne

Glass Cathedral

Notes

Track seven names the thing that built the cathedral. Under the glass tower there was a throne, and I built a throne inside my mind, a crown of truth I thought was mine. This song is the demolition of that throne, and notice it is not a throne of obvious wickedness. It is a throne of truth - or what a proud man calls truth when he has made himself its king.

The verses are merciless self-examination, and they are the album doing what it does best. I saw failure everywhere, every fault I could declare - the heresy hunter's whole career in one couplet. But the mirror told the truth: every war began in me. That is the sentence the throne cannot survive. As long as the war is always out there, the king keeps his crown. The moment you see the war started in your own heart, the throne is finished.

And the song is careful about who does the finishing. Only grace can make me see my will was never truly free. I could not abdicate a throne I did not even know I was sitting on. It took mercy falling like the rain to break the pride and every chain. Not my strength, not my voice, not the battles or the choice. The outro says it as plainly as it can be said - the throne is gone, the war is done, grace has won. A man does not break his own throne. He is dethroned by a greater King, and it is the kindest thing that ever happens to him.

Lyrics

[Intro]
I built a throne
Inside my mind
A crown of truth
I thought was mine

[Verse 1]
Pride was whispering in my ear
Telling me that I was clear
Every word I threw like stone
Every truth I claimed my own

[Pre-Chorus]
But in the quiet
I began to see
The war inside
Was ruling me

[Chorus]
Break the throne
Inside my heart
Tear the crown
And pull it apart

Only grace
Can make me see
My will was
Never truly free

Break the throne
End the fight
Turn my blindness
Into light

Only You
Can make me whole
Only You
Can rule my soul

[Verse 2]
I saw failure everywhere
Every fault I could declare
But the mirror told the truth
Every war began in me

[Pre-Chorus]
And in the silence
Mercy came
And everything
Was not the same

[Chorus]
Break the throne
Inside my heart
Tear the crown
And pull it apart

Only grace
Can make me see
My will was
Never truly free

Break the throne
End the fight
Turn my blindness
Into light

Only You
Can make me whole
Only You
Can rule my soul

[Bridge]
Not my strength
Not my voice
Not the battles
Or the choice

Mercy falling
Like the rain
Breaking pride
And every chain

[Final Chorus]
Break the throne
Inside my heart
Tear the crown
And pull it apart

Only grace
Can make me see
My will was
Never truly free

Break the throne
End the fight
Turn my blindness
Into light

Only You
Can make me whole
Only You
Can rule my soul

[Outro]
The throne is gone
The war is done
Grace has won
Grace has wons
