How can we know if a prophet is speaking the truth?

Answered in 1 source

A true prophet's words must align with Scripture, and if their prophecies do not come to pass, they are not sent by God.

According to Deuteronomy 18:21-22, if a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord and what they say does not come to pass, that prophet has spoken presumptuously and should not be heeded. This establishes a clear test for discerning true prophets from false ones. Jesus also emphasizes the importance of believing in Him and His words, as rejecting them leads to judgment (John 12:48). The consistency of a prophet’s message with the written word of God is crucial; any departure from Scripture signals a false prophet. Believers are encouraged to evaluate every teaching against the backdrop of Scripture to ensure the truth.
