How do we know if we truly love God?

Answered in 11 sources

We can know we love God through the fruits of love, such as our thoughts about Him, our desire for fellowship, and our obedience to His commands (1 John 5:21).

The assurance of our love for God can be discerned through various fruits that are produced in our lives. For example, if our thoughts are consistently drawn to God, reflecting that we think about what we love, this is a strong indicator of our affection for Him. Additionally, a genuine desire for fellowship with God, manifested through such practices as prayer and participation in the ordinances, illustrates a longing for communion that comes from love. Obedience is another fruit of love; Jesus himself affirmed that if we love Him, we will keep His commandments (John 14:15). Such conditions in our lives demonstrate that we are among those who love God as described in Scripture.
