How do we know self-denial is true?

Answered in 1 source

True self-denial is marked by God's interest prevailing over self-interest.

To discern the authenticity of self-denial in one's life, one must evaluate what they prioritize above all else. If the desire to glorify God and seek eternal life supersedes personal gain, it indicates genuine self-denial. The heart's inclination toward God is critical; if one prizes spiritual realities like Christ and holiness over worldly pleasures and comforts, it is a clear sign of true self-denial. Ultimately, those who exercise authentic self-denial exhibit a lifestyle governed by God’s will rather than the desires of the flesh.
