How do we know that Christ died for the elect only?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture teaches that Christ's death had a specific purpose for the elect, as indicated in His prayers where He states He is not praying for the world, but for those given to Him (John 17:9).

The doctrine that Christ died only for the elect is rooted in several biblical assertions. In John 17:9, Jesus clearly states, 'I pray for them; I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me.' This indicates that His atoning sacrifice was intended for a specific group—those chosen by the Father—rather than a general offering to all. The argument further builds on the premise that if Christ died for everyone, then all would logically be saved; however, this contradicts the reality that many perish. Instead, His death accomplishes salvation for those whom the Father has sovereignly chosen, affirming that His atonement is effectual.
