How do we know that humans are totally depraved?

Answered in 3 sources

The Bible teaches that all humans are born in sin and are incapable of doing anything truly righteous apart from God's grace.

Romans 3:10-12 clearly states, 'There is none righteous, no, not one,' indicating that every part of humanity is affected by sin. This doctrine of total depravity holds that every aspect of man's being—mind, will, and emotions—is corrupted by sin, making it impossible for individuals to seek God or do what is pleasing to Him without divine intervention. The idea of total depravity is not that people are as bad as they could be, but rather that sin has so tainted every part of our nature that we cannot come to God without His grace. We are fundamentally lost and in need of a Savior, highlighting our dependence on Christ for redemption and righteousness.
