How do we know that husbands should love their wives?

Answered in 2 sources

Husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loved the Church, sacrificing and nurturing them.

Ephesians 5:25 provides a profound mandate for husbands: 'Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it.' This highlights the sacrificial nature of a husband's love, which should reflect the self-giving and nurturing love that Christ shows to His Church. The husband is to dwell with his wife according to knowledge, honoring her as a weaker vessel and recognizing that they are joint heirs of the grace of life (1 Peter 3:7). This kind of love is rooted in grace and should be expressed regardless of the wife's actions, aiming to edify and honor her, ensuring the health of their spiritual lives and unity in prayer.
