How do we know that Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy?

In Acts 2, the Apostle Peter makes it clear that Jesus is the fulfillment of the prophecies spoken by the Old Testament prophets, including Joel. Peter cites Joel's prophecy about the last days and the pouring out of the Spirit as being realized in the events occurring at Pentecost, thereby establishing Jesus as the Messiah.
