How do we know that only God can forgive sins?

Answered in 1 source

Scripture demonstrates that the authority to forgive sins is a divine prerogative, as shown in the actions and claims of Jesus in the Gospels.

The Bible affirms that only God can forgive sins because sin is primarily an offense against His holiness. In Matthew 9, when Jesus forgives a paralytic, He evokes controversy from the teachers of the law, who rightly claim that only God can forgive sins. Jesus uses this occasion to demonstrate His divinity by exercising this authority. Additionally, the concept of God’s justice demands that sin be dealt with properly, which is only fulfilled in the sacrifice of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Hence, we recognize through both Old and New Testament scriptures that forgiveness is rooted in God's loving justice and righteousness, mediated through Christ's atoning work.
