How do we know that salvation is by God's mercy and not our works?

Answered in 2 sources

Titus 3:5 states that we are saved 'not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy.'

The assurance that salvation is based on God's mercy rather than human effort is explicitly affirmed in Scripture. Titus 3:5 clearly articulates this truth: 'Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us.' This verse underscores that our righteous works cannot contribute to our salvation; instead, it is solely God's mercy that saves us. Human righteousness is insufficient because of our inherent sinfulness. The only righteousness that satisfies God’s justice comes through Christ, who fulfills the law perfectly on behalf of His people. Thus, it is through faith in Christ that we receive the righteousness necessary for salvation—one that is imputed to us rather than earned.
