How do we know that serving God is essential?

Answered in 1 source

Serving God is vital as it reflects our commitment to glorifying Him, which is the primary purpose of our lives.

The necessity of serving God stems from our recognition of His claims upon our lives through creation, redemption, and His sovereign grace. In John Newton's view, we are debtors to God in multiple ways – by creation, by being redeemed from sin, and by our voluntary surrender to His will. This relationship binds us in service to Him, transforming our daily lives into opportunities to express our devotion through good works.

Moreover, Newton notes that genuine service cannot be separated from the glory of God. In serving Him, we fulfill our primary purpose and find true satisfaction in our lives. Romans 12:1 encourages believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is their reasonable service. This requires a dedicated and sincere heart that seeks to honor God in every circumstance, ultimately proving that serving Him is essential for a fruitful and fulfilling Christian life.
