How do we know the purpose of the cross?

Answered in 1 source

The purpose of the cross is to reveal God's glory and His rich mercy towards sinners.

The cross serves the ultimate purpose of glorifying God by showcasing His character, particularly His mercy and grace. Ephesians 2:7 explains that through Christ, God intends to display the riches of His grace in the coming ages. The cross is not an afterthought or a 'plan B'; rather, it was part of God's eternal plan from before the foundations of the world (Revelation 13:8). Through the cross, we understand God's justice—where no sin is left unpunished—and His mercy, where sinners can find forgiveness. It is through this powerful act that we see both God's righteous anger against sin and His loving kindness towards those He has chosen for salvation.
