What does it mean to be spiritually dead?

Answered in 17 sources

To be spiritually dead means lacking any spiritual life or ability to come to God without regeneration by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:1).

Spiritual death signifies a complete inability to respond to God or to seek Him on one's own. Ephesians 2:1 states, 'And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.' This indicates that without the life-giving work of the Holy Spirit, individuals remain in a state of spiritual death, fully unable to please God or recognize their need for salvation. Just as a physically dead person cannot respond to stimuli, a spiritually dead person cannot come to Christ unless they are drawn by the Father (John 6:44). Thus, understanding our condition as spiritually dead emphasizes the necessity of regeneration, which solely relies on God's initiative and grace.
