What does the Bible say about comfort in suffering?

Answered in 8 sources

The Bible teaches that true comfort in suffering comes from knowing that our present sufferings cannot compare to the glory that will be revealed in us (Romans 8:18).

The Scriptures highlight that genuine comfort during times of sorrow and grief is not found in worldly pleasures or possessions, but in the promises of God. In Romans 8:18, Paul writes, 'For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.' This verse assures believers that although they face various trials, these temporary sufferings serve a greater purpose in God's eternal plan and cannot diminish the joy that awaits them in glory. Isaiah 40:1 echoes this need for comfort: 'Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.' Thus, believers are called to place their hope not in worldly comforts but in the everlasting assurance of God's love and glory.
