What does the Bible say about God's sovereignty in calamity?

Answered in 2 sources

The Bible asserts that calamities, including natural disasters, are sovereignly decreed by God as part of His providence.

Scripture teaches that God's sovereignty extends over every calamity. Amos 3:6 states, 'If a calamity occurs in a city, has not the LORD done it?' This highlights that no event is random or outside of God's control. In the face of earthquakes, storms, and other disasters, we may find ourselves asking why such events occur, but the Bible assures us that they serve a purpose within His divine plan. They reveal His holy justice and majesty, awakening hearts to the urgency of repentance and the reality of sin. John 9:3 echoes this understanding as Jesus explains that suffering can manifest God's works through us, including calamity.
