What does the Bible say about God speaking to prophets?

Answered in 1 source

God spoke to prophets through visions and dreams before Scripture was complete, but now He speaks through His written Word.

In the past, God communicated with prophets through dreams and visions, as seen in Numbers 12:6. For instance, He told Miriam and Aaron that He would make Himself known to His prophets in these ways. However, with the completion of Scripture, the New Testament informs us that God now speaks to us through His Son, as stated in Hebrews 1:1-2. The messages of the prophets were meant to ultimately point to Christ, and in Acts 3:18, we see that their testimonies foretold the suffering of Christ. Therefore, while visions were valid in biblical times, today God communicates through His written Word, which is complete and sufficient.
