What does the Bible say about reprobation?

Answered in 16 sources

The Bible teaches that reprobation is God's sovereign decree to pass over some people, allowing them to remain in their sin and ultimately leading to their eternal damnation (Romans 9:22).

Reprobation refers to the doctrine whereby God sovereignly chooses to not extend grace to certain individuals, allowing them to continue in their sinful state. Scripture clearly affirms this reality, notably in Romans 9:22, which states that God endures with much long-suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction. This indicates that there are indeed some whom God has determined not to save, thereby leaving them to their own sinful inclinations. As Calvin articulated, the object of God’s decree is ultimately for His glory, demonstrating both His mercy to the elect and His justice toward the reprobate. The doctrine of reprobation emphasizes God’s overarching sovereignty in all matters of salvation and judgment.
