What does the Bible say about salvation by works?

Answered in 12 sources

The Bible teaches that salvation cannot be earned through works, as it is only by grace through faith in Christ that we are saved.

The Scriptures explicitly convey that salvation cannot be attained through our works. In Romans 11:6, Paul writes, 'And if by grace, then it is no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace.' This illustrates that if any part of salvation hinges on our actions or efforts, it disqualifies grace entirely. The law demands perfect obedience which we inherently cannot fulfill due to our sinful nature, making salvation by work as impossible as 'making bricks without straw.' Only through Christ’s perfect work can we achieve righteousness before God, freeing us from the burdensome demands of the law.
