What does the Bible say about the conflict between flesh and spirit?

Answered in 4 sources

The Bible teaches that believers experience a constant conflict between their flesh and their new nature in Christ.

The conflict between flesh and spirit is a prominent theme in Scripture, most notably in Romans 7, where Paul describes his struggle with sin: 'For I delight in the law of God after the inward man; but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind' (Romans 7:22-23). This inward warfare is characteristic of every believer, as they are reborn with a new nature that is at odds with the flesh. The old nature remains, and as long as we live in this world, this conflict will persist. Paul reassures us that while the flesh seeks to dominate, those who live by faith in Christ are empowered by the Spirit to resist these desires. Thus, we have a dual existence—one that is new and righteous in Christ and another that is burdened by sin until our glorification.
