What does the Bible say about the intermediate state after death?

Answered in 1 source

The Bible does not support the concept of an intermediate state between death and resurrection.

According to 2 Corinthians 5:1-10, the Apostle Paul clearly distinguishes only between two conditions: temporal and eternal. There is no biblical reference to an intermediate state or a third condition. Paul emphasizes that when believers die, they are not left in a state of nakedness but rather transition directly from a mortal body to an immortal one. This teaching contrasts with concepts like purgatory or the belief that souls exist apart from bodies during the waiting period before resurrection.
