What does the Bible say about the role of deacons?

Answered in 8 sources

The Bible teaches that deacons are to serve the church by assisting with practical needs so that the apostles may focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word.

In Acts 6, the apostles recognized the need for deacons to address the distribution of aid within the church, specifically to care for the widows who were being neglected. The apostles said, 'It is not reasonable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.' Therefore, they instructed the believers to select men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, to fulfill this important role. This arrangement allowed the apostles to devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word, illustrating the value of having deacons to manage practical matters within the church community.
