What does the Bible say about the significance of the bronze serpent in Numbers?

Answered in 1 source

The bronze serpent in Numbers symbolizes Christ, as Jesus pointed out in John 3:14-15, representing salvation for those who look to Him in faith.

The bronze serpent in Numbers 21 serves as a powerful type or figure of Christ, illustrating the way God saves sinners. When the Israelites were bitten by venomous snakes as a result of their sin and complaining against God, they were commanded to look at the bronze serpent lifted on a pole in order to be healed (Numbers 21:4-9). This act of looking represents faith in God's provision for salvation. In John 3:14-15, Jesus refers to this event, stating, 'As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.' Therefore, the bronze serpent points to Christ, who was lifted up on the cross to provide salvation from the deadly poison of sin.
