Why can't ceremonies or rituals take away sin?

Answered in 1 source

Ceremonies or rituals cannot take away sin because they lack the power and sufficiency found in Christ's sacrifice.

The rituals and sacrifices of the Old Testament, as mentioned in Hebrews 10:4, were ineffective in actually removing sin. They were only temporary measures pointing forward to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ. Genuine atonement requires the shedding of perfect blood, which only the sinless Lamb of God could provide. Thus, relying on rituals detracts from the sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice and fails to deal with the root of sin itself.
