Why do we need God's mercy?

God's mercy is central to the believer's experience, as exemplified in Psalm 51, where David pleads for mercy and cleansing from sin. We do not deserve salvation or the comfort of His presence; rather, we rely on His loving kindness to blot out our transgressions and restore us.
