Why is baptism not the means of salvation?

Answered in 1 source

Baptism is an outward sign of an inward grace, not the actual source of salvation.

Baptism must not be confused with salvation itself; it is a vital ordinance yet does not confer grace or regeneration. The belief that baptism can save is a misunderstanding of its significance. Salvation comes solely through the blood of Christ and the grace of God. As outlined in Scripture, our regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit, and baptism is merely a public testimony to that transformation. It represents the remission of sins but does not effectuate it, as redemption is solely through the grace given in Christ's sacrifice.
