Why is chastisement important for Christians?

Answered in 7 sources

Chastisement is a sign of God’s love and a means of spiritual growth, guiding Christians back to a path of righteousness (Hebrews 12:5-11).

Hebrews 12:5-11 highlights the distinction between divine punishment and chastisement, noting that while God does not punish His children for their sins (as Christ bore that penalty), He does chasten them as a loving Father. This chastening is essential for growth and conformity to Christ's image (Romans 8:29). Divine chastisement is aimed at our spiritual well-being and serves to maintain a close relationship with our Father. It teaches us about holiness and helps us become partakers in His divine nature, evidencing our sonship. Without it, we might wander further from Him, but through His corrective hand, we are molded for His glory.
