Why is Christ's atonement important for Christians?

Answered in 19 sources

Christ's atonement is paramount for Christians because it is the only means by which our sins can be forgiven and we can be reconciled to God.

The atonement of Christ is of utmost significance for Christians as it provides the unique and ultimate sacrifice for sin. According to Hebrews 9:22, 'without shedding of blood is no remission,' indicating that sin requires a blood sacrifice to restore our relationship with God. While the Old Testament sacrifices were continual and ultimately insufficient, Christ, as our great High Priest, offered Himself as the perfect and final sacrifice. Through His sacrifice, believers are assured that their sins are fully paid for and forever removed. Recognizing this truth encourages Christians to rely solely on Christ for their salvation—it's not the performance of religious duties or personal righteousness that saves us, but Christ’s work alone that grants us standing before God.
