Why is dependence on God important for humility?

Answered in 1 source

Dependence on God fosters humility, as it acknowledges His sovereignty and our need for His grace.

Dependence on God is foundational for humility because it recognizes that everything we have is a gift from Him. The pride of self-sufficiency distorts our understanding of our true value, leading us to underestimate our need for God's grace. Scripture teaches that true knowledge of God leads us to a rightful assessment of ourselves (Romans 12:3). When we understand that we contribute nothing to our salvation and that all blessings come from God, we are faced with the reality of our dependence on Him, which cultivates genuine humility in our hearts. This relationship of dependence allows us to live out the call of 1 Peter 5:6 to humble ourselves under His mighty hand.
