Why is gossip considered a sin?

Answered in 1 source

Gossip is seen as speaking evil of others and undermines community and love (James 4:11).

The Scripture warns against gossip and speaking evil of one another, as articulated in James 4:11, where it states that 'he who speaks evil of a brother judges his brother.' This act elevates the speaker to a position of authority that only God possesses. Gossip not only harms the reputation of others but also fractures community and promotes division. Believers are called to uphold one another in love, seeking to encourage and build each other up instead of tearing down through criticism. A humble acknowledgment of our own flaws can help us to refrain from speaking ill of others.
