Why is humility important when approaching God?

Answered in 2 sources

Humility is essential because it acknowledges our sinfulness and dependence on God's grace for salvation.

Humility is a foundational aspect of our relationship with God as depicted in the story of the leper. The leper's posture was one of submission and acknowledgment of his desperate state (Matthew 8:2). Throughout Scripture, pride is identified as a barrier between God and man, while humility is seen as a means to receive God's grace. In Isaiah 6, when Isaiah encounters the holy God, he exclaims, 'Woe is me! For I am a man of unclean lips.' This humbling realization precedes God’s cleansing work in his life. Therefore, approaching God in humility allows us to recognize our need for His mercy and opens the door for His redemptive work in our lives.
