Why is seeking pleasure and amusement a mistake for happiness?

Answered in 1 source

Seeking pleasure alone is a mistake because such pursuits often lead to hollow and temporary satisfactions rather than lasting happiness.

The pursuit of pleasure through amusement is described as one of the most common delusions regarding happiness. People often believe that they can discover joy through relentless entertainment and superficial engagements; however, these pursuits leave them spiritually empty. J.C. Ryle points out that relying solely on pleasures—like feasting, reveling, or social amusements—only distracts from the deeper spiritual truths necessary for genuine happiness. This transient joy is akin to chasing shadows, ultimately depriving individuals of true fulfillment which can only be found in God’s presence.
