Why is understanding righteousness important for Christians?

Answered in 34 sources

Understanding righteousness is crucial for Christians as it reveals our need for Christ's imputed righteousness and assures us of our standing before God.

Righteousness in the Christian faith signifies the perfect moral standard set by God, which none of us can achieve on our own. Romans 3:23 states, 'for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.' The Holy Spirit's role is to convince us of this shortcoming and reveal that the only righteousness acceptable to God is that which comes through faith in Christ (Philippians 3:9). When Christians grasp this, they understand their complete dependence on Jesus' atoning sacrifice and His righteousness that is imputed to them. This assurance is essential for a believer's peace and confidence in their salvation, knowing that they are justified before God not by their works, but by Christ's finished work.
