What does the Bible say about God's glory?

The Bible declares God's glory in creation, salvation, and His sovereignty, urging us to worship Him and declare His wonders.

God's glory is a central theme throughout the Bible, underscored in passages like Psalm 96 which beckons all of creation to recognize and sing of His majestic attributes. The psalmist emphasizes the greatness of God, declaring that 'the Lord made the heavens' and commands us to 'give unto the Lord the glory due unto His name.' This glory is reflected in His creation, providence, and the magnitude of His salvation. It is vital for Christians to remember that God's glory is the ultimate purpose of our worship and the foundation of our faith, as His sovereignty remains unmatched compared to the false gods of this world.

Psalm 96, Colossians 1:16, John 1:3

How do we know the sovereignty of God is true?

The sovereignty of God is affirmed through scripture, where He declares His authority and control over all creation.

Scripture repeatedly affirms God's sovereignty, most prominently in Exodus 33:19 when He tells Moses, 'I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.' This declaration encapsulates not only God's authority but also the grace He extends to His people. Furthermore, passages like Psalm 97:9 and Jude 1:25 celebrate His reign and majesty. Understanding God's sovereignty is crucial for Christians as it shapes our view of His goodness and control in the midst of chaos, showing that nothing occurs outside of His divine will.

Exodus 33:19, Psalm 97:9, Jude 1:25

Why is worshiping God's glory important for Christians?

Worshiping God's glory is essential for Christians as it acknowledges His greatness and aligns our hearts with His truth.

Worship is not merely a duty; it is an expression of our love, gratitude, and recognition of God's supremacy. Psalm 96 invites us to 'worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness,' illustrating that honoring God's glory is foundational to our relationship with Him. By acknowledging His greatness, we remember that we exist to glorify Him, as all things were created by Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). When Christians focus on God's glory, it fosters a deep reliance on His providence and encourages us to share His light with others, thereby fulfilling the Great Commission to 'declare His glory among the heathen.'

Psalm 96, Colossians 1:16, Matthew 28:19-20

What does it mean to declare God's glory?

Declaring God's glory means to publicly acknowledge His attributes and works, proclaiming His greatness among others.

To declare God's glory is a theological call for believers to acknowledge and share the wondrous acts of God in both creation and salvation. Psalm 96:3 commands us to 'declare His glory among the heathen,' which involves sharing the message of His greatness, mercy, and sovereignty. This declaration is not just a verbal proclamation, but a lifestyle that reflects His glory through our actions and worship. As Christians embody the truth of His glory, they invite others to experience the transformative power of God's love and grace, ultimately fulfilling the purpose of our existence as we glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

Go with me if you would now to
Psalm 96. Psalm 96. This Psalm. was taken from 1st Chronicles
16. This is what we just read a moment
ago in the scripture reading. That's why we started halfway
into what David wrote. It's because this is the portion
that became Psalm 96. And the wording here is very
similar. There are some things that are
changed, but if you compared them side by side, you would
see that this is indeed what David wrote. Let's read these
13 verses right here. And as we do, let's pay special
attention to the word glory. All right, the word glory. Let's see how this Psalm speaks
of His glory. Psalm 96, verse one, it says,
Oh, sing unto the Lord a new song. Sing unto the Lord all
the earth. Sing unto the Lord, bless His
name, show forth His salvation from day to day. Declare His
glory among the heathen, His wonders among all people. For
the Lord is great and greatly to be praised. He is to be feared
above all gods. For all the gods of the nations
are idols. But the Lord made the heavens.
Honor and majesty are before Him. Strength and beauty are
in His sanctuary. Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds
of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory
due unto His name. Bring an offering and come into
His courts. Oh, worship the Lord in the beauty
of holiness. Fear before Him all the earth. Say among the heathen that the
Lord reigneth. The world also shall be established,
that it shall not be moved. He shall judge the people righteously. Let the heavens rejoice and let
the earth be glad. Let the sea roar in the fullness
thereof. Let the field be joyful and all
that is therein. Then shall all the trees of the
wood rejoice before the Lord. For he cometh, for he cometh
to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with
righteousness and the people with his truth. This is speaking
of our God, who is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That's
who this is talking about. He is the God of the Old Testament
who was, is, and forever will be the Lord Jesus Christ. And verse three said, declare
His glory. Declare His glory. That's what
we need to do. Verse 7, the end of verse 7 said,
give unto the Lord glory and strength. Verse 8 says, give
unto the Lord the glory due unto His name. That's what we need
to do. And that's the desire of every
child of God. That is the desire of Our hearts,
that's our desire. Every time that we come to worship,
that's our desire at all times, but especially every time that
we come to worship in our worship, whenever I come
here to worship, I'm the preacher. These are my notes. I already
know what I'm going to say. I already know how the end of
this goes. But every time I come here, I
come here to worship. I've been given a job to do. That's true. but I come here
to worship. As we get to the place where
we're leading up to this service and I'm getting changed and in
my car on the way over here and waiting for this to happen and
sitting in the pew, I am asking the Lord to let me worship too. Lord, bless me. I want to be
fed by this. I want to be fed. I honestly
do. I want to be comforted. I want
to be blessed. I want to be strengthened. That's
why I'm here. I desire every bit of that for
you. I don't want you to waste your
time. I don't want you to walk out
of here feeling like I got nothing out of that. I don't want to
fall on my face. I don't want any of those things
to happen. I don't want to be a hindrance
to you. I don't want to be a stumbling
block. I want us to enjoy worship. I want us, does that make sense?
But above all that, I mean above all that, as much as all that
is true, as much as I want my heart to burn within me, and
I want your hearts to burn within you, above all that, I want Him
to be glorified. Even if my heart doesn't burn
within me, even if I walk out of this place feeling like I
fell flat on my face, there are times that I do, I just want
to crawl out of here and go hide somewhere. Even if that's the
case, even if that's the case, even if none of us have our hearts
burned within us, I want him to be glorified and
I know you do too. I know you do too. Men can conjure
up a movement and make everybody feel, have the warm and fuzzies
and God not be glorified. And we say, God forbid. Let a
man tell me the truth and glorify God and everything will be okay.
I want him to be glorified. You want him to be glorified. Now him being glorified is the
new song David was writing about. That's the new song. God puts
a new song on in his people. And it goes like this, not unto
me. Oh Lord, not unto me, but unto
thy name give glory. I pray he might be glorified
tonight. I pray he might be praised tonight. I want him to be exalted and
honored in everything tonight. I pray that God's Holy Spirit
might put that new song in us that cries, sincerely cries,
all glory and praise to the lamb that was slain. who has borne
all our sins and has cleansed every stain." Hallelujah means
praise ye the Lord. Thine the glory. Hallelujah. Amen. That means so be it. That's
what I want. Thine the glory. Thine be the
glory. The old song of the flesh. man starts out singing an old
song and that old song of the flesh cries all glory be unto
me that's what it cries that's the old song all praise be unto
me all honor be unto me for what i have done for myself
praise be unto me for what i've done for god that's the old song
let me tell you what i've done for god that's the old song Praise
be unto me for everything I've done for God and everything I've
done for myself. But the new song of the Spirit
cries, His glory alone, His work alone, His credit alone, His
praise alone. And by His grace, to His credit,
that's the song that we sing. That's the song that He has put
in our hearts to sing. Verse one says, oh, sing unto
the Lord a new song. Sing unto the Lord all the earth. Sing unto the Lord, bless His
name. Show forth His salvation from
day to day. Not mine. But he is from day
to day. Verse three says, declare his
glory. That's all we're going to do
tonight. By his grace, we're just going
to declare his glory. We're going to see, and in our
hearts, we're going to sing this new song of his glory. That's the theme of the night,
his glory. Now, I've told you this before,
but I'm going to tell it to you again because I honestly don't
know of a better and clearer physical example, physical illustration
of an old song being changed into a new song than this right
here. The old song of the flesh says,
the glory goes to me. Make sure you see me. Look at
me. And the new song of the spirit
says, the glory goes to Christ. Make sure you see Christ. Look
at Christ. All right. This is a beautiful
example of that. There's an old song and we don't
sing it. It's in our hymnal, but we don't
sing it. It's called, I surrender all. And you may remember, I told
you this not too long ago, but that song says, All to Jesus,
I surrender. All to Him, I freely give. And I pointed this out last time,
but grace is a free gift. That's something God does for
us. The audacity of man saying, I'm gonna be gracious to you.
But it says all to Jesus, I surrender all to Him. I freely give, I
will ever love and trust Him. I'm confident in myself. I will forever love and trust
Him in His presence daily live. I'll keep myself right there. I surrender all. I surrender
all, all to Thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all. That's the old song of the flesh
that wants to glorify itself. Here's the new song of the spirit
that glorifies Christ. We have a brother who changed
the words of that song. And same music, but he changed
the words. He made a new song out of it,
and here's how it goes. He wrote, all for me, Christ
did surrender. All for me, he freely gave. Holy one made sin for sinners. By his death, my soul is saved. He surrendered all. He surrendered all. All to be
my blessed savior, He surrendered all. That's a new song. That's a brand new song. That
is the declaration of His glory. And that's all that we're gonna
declare by His grace. That's all that we're going to
declare. That's all we're gonna declare
tonight in everything that's written here. Verse two says,
sing unto the Lord, bless His name. Bless His name. Oh, the glory of His name. What is His name? Savior. Call His name Jesus because He's the Savior. His name is
salvation. Don't turn, but Psalm 21 verse
5 says, His glory is great in thy salvation. His glory is great in Thy salvation,
so great it's all. It's all, let me read you a few
lines from the Huckster. I won't read the whole thing.
You know this so well, this Huckster Jack, this was a wretched fellow,
just a wretched fellow, but God in mercy caused him to hear these
words, I'm a poor sinner and nothing at all, but Jesus Christ
is my all in all. So he heard that, he latched
onto that, and Spurgeon said, he has said to join himself unto
the church, But the brethren looked suspiciously at him and
inquired, what is your experience? He said he had no experience
but this, I'm a poor sinner, nothing at all. Jesus Christ
is my all in all. The good elders very properly
asked, are you converted? And it's funny to me, that's
what men wanna know. They said, have you been born
again? And Jack replied, I do not know much about these things.
But I do know and am sure of, I'm a poor sinner and nothing
at all, but Jesus Christ is my all in all. They put him back
for a while to try if he would grow in his knowledge, but he
never went an inch beyond the first standard. He knew what
he did know and to that he held fast. I'm a poor sinner and nothing
at all, but Jesus Christ is my all in all. Well, they must take
him into the church. They could not well refuse a
man with such a confession of faith. And when he was in the
church walking with the brethren, he was happier than the rest
of them. And that's what grace will make a man or a woman be.
While everybody else is in bondage and struggling and sad and miserable,
grace will set a man free. And he was so happy and they
greatly marveled. And they said to him, Brother
Jack, don't you sometimes feel doubts and fears? Doubts, he
said, what do you mean? I never doubt that I'm a poor
sinner and nothing at all. I have daily proofs of it. Why
should I doubt that Jesus Christ is my all in all? He says he
is, and I must believe him. I'm gonna just keep reading.
One said, sometimes I enjoy good frames and feelings and feel
very happy and then I lose them and sink in spirit. Jack answered,
I never get lower than I am. I'm down at the bottom. I'm a
poor sinner. Nothing at all. Can't get lower
than that, can I? But he said, I'm also at the
top for Jesus Christ is my all in all. I can't get higher than
that, can I? They tried Him in every way, shape, and form, but
He would not leave. His first stanza, I'm a poor
sinner, nothing at all. Jesus Christ is my all in all. All glory be unto Him. Verse two says, sing unto the
Lord, bless His name. Show forth His salvation from
day to day. Declare His glory in salvation. All glory belongs to Him in salvation. Verse 3 says, declare His glory
among the heathen, His wonders among all people. His wonders
among all people. Oh, the glory of His providence. The glory of His salvation, the
glory of His providence. All of these wonders that are
taking place until the day we leave this earth, I'll tell you
what will happen. Wonder after wonder, after wonder. I wonder,
I don't know, I wonder. Wonder, all of these wonders. These are His wonders. There He is. Let's not ever forget
that. Let's not forget to declare that. These are His wonders.
Don't turn to Genesis 50. I was going to have you turn
there, but that's where Joseph's brethren were standing before
him, realizing this is our brother who we sold and left for dead. And now they're afraid because
their lives are in his hands. And Joseph said to him, fear
not. He said, you meant everything
you did for evil. But God meant every bit of it
for good, to save much people alive. All of these wonders that happen,
they're all His wonders. And everything that we see in
this world is all happening according to His providence, everything. And we need to declare His glory
in it. That's what Joseph did. He declared His glory. He said,
you put me in a pit. You sold me into slavery." And
He declared God's glory in it. We need to see His glory in all
these things. We need to sing of His glory
in all these things. Because there's a new song in
every wonder that happens. There's a new song in it. Psalm
96 verse 3 says, "...declare His glory among the heathen,
His wonders among all people." For the Lord is great and greatly
to be praised. He is to be feared above all
gods. Oh, the glory of his greatness.
He is high above all things. Psalm 97, the next Psalm, verse
nine says, for thou Lord are high above all the earth. High above all the earth. Psalm
99 verse two says, the Lord is great in Zion and he is high
above all the people. He's high above all the imaginations
of the people. Every false God that man could
possibly imagine. There are so many false gods.
There are so many false gods. Most of them have the name of
Jesus. And they're false because they're not the true and living
God of the Scripture. And the true God, His glory is
above all those other gods, those other gods who are weak and low. They're so low and helpless. This God is high. His glory is
high. His name is high and lifted up. He is greatly to be praised.
Psalm 96 verse five says, for all the gods of the nations are
idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Oh, the glory of his
creation. He gets the glory in creation. How did all of this get here?
Well, we'll go to school and find out. How did all of this get here?
How did we get here? Well, there was a big bang. That's
not how it happened. John 1 verse 3 says, all things
were made by Him. Our children need to know that.
We need to know that. All things were made by Christ
and without Him was not anything made that was made. Colossians
1.16 says, by Him, by the Lord Jesus Christ, were all things
created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and
invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities
or powers, all things were created by Him and for Him, and He gets
the glory in every bit of it. Verse 6 says, Honor and majesty
are before Him. Strength and beauty are in His
sanctuary. Oh, the glory of His kingship. I don't even know if
that's a word. His lordship. His honor and His majesty are
before Him. there before Him. Colossians
1, I just quoted 16, it goes on to say, He is before all things,
and by Him all things consist. He's the head of the body, the
church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead,
that in all things He might have the preeminence in everything. He might be first. He might be
highest. Verse 6 says, honor and majesty
are before Him, strength and beauty are in His sanctuary. We just sang, oh, worship the
King all glorious above. First Timothy 117 says, now unto
the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God be honor and
glory forever and ever, amen. David said, Give the glory to
whom it's due. Ascribe it all to whom it's due.
Verse 7, Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people,
give unto the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord
the glory due unto his name. Bring an offering and come into
his courts. What could we possibly offer
God? when He carries this much glory? What could you offer a God like
that? What could you possibly bring to a God who is this glorious
in salvation, and this glorious in providence, and this glorious
in His greatness, and this glorious in His creation, and in everything
that He is as King of kings and Lord of lords? What could you
possibly bring? Thanksgiving, that's all. That's what 1 Chronicles 16 said. Give thanks, the fruit of our
lips, Thanksgiving, that's all we have to offer Him. Oh, give
thanks unto the Lord. He's good and His mercy endures
forever. Verse nine says, oh, worship
the Lord in the beauty of holiness. Fear before Him all the earth. Oh, the glory of His holiness. I'll tell you, I'll tell you
why we're so ready to be done with this world. Sin. If it was not for sin, we would
not be ready to be done with this world. That will give us a glimpse of
the beauty of His holiness. That'll tell you the beauty and
the glory of heaven. His holiness, the spotlessness,
the purity, the sinlessness, the perfection. Shall not the
judge of the earth do right? Aren't you tired of wicked men
doing wrong? Especially this one. He can and he will only do what's
right. Verse 10, it says, Say among
the heathen that the Lord reigneth. The world also shall be established,
that it shall not be moved. He shall judge the people righteously."
He said, the Lord reigneth, thy God reigneth. He said, you tell
the people your God is sovereign. Tell the people your God is sovereign. Oh, the glory of His sovereignty. Don't we glorify Him and His
sovereignty in all things? He himself said that that was
his greatest glory. That's what he said to Moses.
Moses said, show me your glory. He said, here it is. I'll be
merciful to whom I'll be merciful and I'll be gracious to whom
I'll be gracious. In my sovereignty, I'll show
mercy and grace. He gets the glory in that. Verse
11 says, Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad. Let
the sea roar in the fullness thereof. Let the field be joyful,
and all that is therein. Then shall all the trees of the
wood rejoice before the Lord. For He cometh, for He cometh
to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with
righteousness, and the people with His truth. He said, He cometh,
He cometh. I love how he said it twice,
he cometh, he cometh. Oh, the glory of his return. He said, let everything rejoice
because the Lord is coming back. His people were judged in Christ. The righteousness of God and
the truth of God and their judgments over. And he said, let everything rejoice
because he's coming back. The Lord is coming back. And
when he does, it's going to be a glorious return. Many verses in the scripture
say that when he comes back, he's going to appear in his glory. The first time he came, he veiled
his glory. First time he came, no man saw
his glory. But not this time. This time
he's coming back in all of his glory. All of His glory shall
be seen. And for those who belong to Him,
and the way that we can know if we belong to Him is those
who belong to Him love His glory. I mean they love His glory. For
those who love His glory, His return will be unto glory. Eternal
glory with Him. David said, declare that to people. Tell that to people, remind His
people of that, and they'll rejoice in it. Let's close with this
right here. Go with me to Jude, just before
Revelation. Jude 1 chapter, verse 24. It says, now unto Him that is
able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless
before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Now just
let me repeat that one time before we move on. Unto Him that's able
to keep you from falling. and to present you faultless
before the presence of His glory." When His glory looks at you,
it will say, compared to my glory, faultless. And he said, it's
going to be with exceeding joy. Verse 25 says to the only wise
God, our savior be glory and majesty, dominion and power both
now and forever. Amen. I hear that in the. in the sound of mighty waters.
I can't wait to be among them. I hear that in the congregation
of heaven, a number no man can number crying. This is what all
of us collectively want. We want all glory and majesty,
dominion and power, both now and forever to go to you. And
the whole congregation cries, Amen. Amen. By God's grace, let's declare
his glory. to all the people, all the people. By His grace, let's give unto
the Lord the glory that's due unto His name. All right, let's
all stand together. Turn with me to 489.
