All right, go with me back to
Mark Chapter 5. Our text this morning begins
with the story of Jairus' daughter. And then the chapter ends with
Jairus' daughter and there's an interruption in the middle
of it. Did you notice that? The story is interrupted in the
middle by the story of this woman with the issue of blood. And
there are three or four times in the scriptures when that happens. A story will start and then another
story happens and then it comes back to the first story. And
my first inclination was to deal with four verses and then skip
ten verses and deal with the last nine verses. But that's
not how the Lord wrote it. It's not how he has written all
of this together. And I believe we'll see that
not only did he write it like this on purpose, he wrote it
like this for our great comfort. I believe there's great comfort
in this. Something was such a blessing to me in this. Both of these
accounts are their own message. Both of them are. But really,
you cannot have one story without the other. They go hand in hand. And once we see that, that's
going to be our comfort. That will give us that comfort.
Now let's look at this as our Lord wrote it. Mark 5 verse 21. And when Jesus was passed over
again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto
him, and he was nigh unto the sea. Our Lord was in Capernaum. He was over in Capernaum and
he preached to the people there. He preached four parables to
them. We looked at it in the last chapter.
And then he left those people and he went to the other side
of the Sea of Galilee, right? They went through that great
storm. And he went to the other side of the sea to save one man. One man. One lunatic. And isn't our God so good that
He would do all that for one man? You know, He said not one
is lost. Not one. Our God is the Savior. He's the Master of the Sea. And
He'll cross whatever it takes to get to that one child of His. Lay hold on Him. shed mercy on
him, bring him to himself, sit him down, clothe him, put him
in his right mind, and then when it's done and finished and over,
he goes on to the next one. Individually, God saves individually. I love that. So the Lord, he
crossed the Sea of Galilee for one lunatic, just like this lunatic
right here. While he was gone, dealing with
this sinner from the tombs, while he was gone, the people back
in Capernaum started dwelling on what he said. He preached
four parables to him. You think his preaching went
forth with power? They started thinking about what
he was saying, dwelling on it. The word of God and the spirit
of God were doing their work. The seed that was planted was
starting to grow in those people back over in Capernaum. Some
of them started realizing what they were. That's what always
happens. You know that? God, I know that
there's not one person that thinks they're actually perfect. Perfect. But when God starts working,
he starts really showing them what they are. It's the first
thing they get a real good glimpse of. And some of them started
seeing what they were, and some of them started realizing who
He was. Boy, when life starts growing, this
man Jesus, who is so blank to the world, so common to the world,
He becomes alive, doesn't He? Life. Some of them started realizing
who this was. Some of them started seeing and
feeling their need. I have a need. Do you? I have a need. Oh man, I have a need. Some of them started falling
in love. Some of them started falling
in love. The reason I know that is because
of what Luke's account says. Turn with me over to Luke chapter
eight. Luke chapter eight, this is the
same account. Verse 38, Luke 8 verse 38 says,
Now the man out of whom the devils were departed, that's that lunatic
in the tombs, besought him that he might be with him. But Jesus
sent him away saying, return to thine own house and show how
great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way and
published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had
done unto him. And it came to pass that when
Jesus was returned, he got back in the ship and he went back
over the Sea of Galilee. And it came to pass that when
Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him, for they
were all waiting for him. Standing there waiting for him.
Come back to us, Lord. We need you. We need you. One of those people right there
was this man Jairus. Go with me back to Mark chapter
5. Mark chapter 5 verse 21 says,
And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other
side, much people gathered unto him, and he was nigh unto the
sea. And behold, there cometh one
of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name. And when he saw
him, he fell at his feet." That's how sinners come to Christ. That's
how sinners come to Christ. If a man or a woman has a heart
to come to Christ, that's how you do it right there. If you
want to be received, that's how you do it right there. They fall
at his feet. They come as beggars. They come
as beggars. That's what we all are, nothing
more than beggars. And I'll tell you this, a sinner
who comes to Christ in his own entitlement, a sinner who comes
in his own pride, a sinner who comes thinking he's
going to do God a favor, that sinner will receive nothing from
the Lord, nothing, absolutely nothing. He sure won't receive
mercy. The only way to come to Christ
is to come falling at his feet. Psalm 2 says, Kiss the son lest
he be angry on the cheek, on the feet. Bow down and kiss his
precious feet. Verse 22 says, And behold, there
cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name. And when he saw him, he fell
at his feet. And besought him greatly, saying,
My little daughter lieth at the point of death. I pray thee,
come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed, and she
shall live. This man's little daughter was
sick to the point of death. But that's not the problem. That's not the problem. That
verse affected me. I dwelled on that for quite a
while. I dwelled on that for quite a while. I do pray that
the Lord would save me and Hannah. I do. But when it comes to our
two little girls, I start begging on a whole different level. I
don't know if that's right or wrong, but I just do. I just
do. We're all going to leave this
earth. We're all going to leave this earth, every one of us.
And for believers, buddy, that's something to be happy about.
But, you know, some are going to leave sooner and some are
going to leave later, but we're all in that boat. You know, somebody
left this world and we're so sad for him. Well, I'm right
around the corner. We're all in that boat. But there is a sickness that
is unto eternal death, and that's the one I'm so concerned about.
That's the one I'm so concerned about. If any of my loved ones
leave this world with Christ, I have nothing but joy. Nothing but joy over it. There
is one thing that every single one of us need. Here's what it
is. We need for God Almighty to reach down His hand for us. We need Him to reach way down
for us. We were born into this world
lost and undone without God's precious Son, but if He'll just
reach down His hand for us. You know that? If he'll just
reach down his hand. Jairus said, Lord, if you will
come to her and touch her, she'll live. That's a wonderful prayer
to pray, isn't it? This man has come to the only
one who can do anything about it. The only one. Lord, if you
will come. If you will touch her, she'll
live. I know she'll live. That right
there is called faith. God-given faith. That's what
faith does. It brings sinners to Christ. People, they talk about faith.
Everybody talks about faith. But you know what faith does?
It brings sinners to Christ. That's what it does. It causes
them to ask and beg and plead. Please, Lord. Please, that moment
of weakness and helplessness. That's why Paul said, when I'm
weak, I'm strong. It's because I'm done with me.
It's got to be you. It has to be you. That's the
strongest place a believer can be. Absolutely. When they're
right there, they're on a rock. When they're right there, they're
on a rock. It has to be you. Please, Lord. Verse 24 says,
And Jesus went with him. Our Lord is so good, isn't he? He's so good, he went, God Almighty
went with him. He came and he asked, he said,
you ask, you'll receive part of the time. He didn't say that. You ask, you'll receive most
of the time. He didn't say that. He said,
you ask, you'll receive. You ask, he went with him. Verse
24, and Jesus went with him and much people followed him and
thronged him. All these people had been waiting
for him. And he gets off the ship and this man Jairus comes
and he falls down at his feet and he said, please, Lord, come
to my house. Please come to my house, would
you please? And he said, I most certainly
will. I thought about that leper. Don't you love the story of that
leper? He came and he fell down at the Lord's feet. And he said,
if you will, you can make me clean. The Lord said, I will. Greatest. Really? Really? Yeah, I sure will. So this great multitude of people
followed him. And I don't know how far his
house was from where the Lord got off that ship. I would imagine
it was some distance. I'm sure it wasn't right around
the corner. But along the way, verse 25 says, a certain woman,
which had an issue of blood 12 years. This woman had an issue
of blood, which means she couldn't stop internally bleeding for
12 years. And boy, it's God's mercy and
grace that she's even still alive. But 12 years, and this was a
big problem. But this was not the problem. Sometimes we get so caught up
on our earthly sickness it consumes us, but we need to be reminded
this is a big problem, but it's not the problem. It's not the
problem. She had what we all have by nature. Every single one of us has an
issue of blood. an issue of blood. It's tainted,
really. It's tainted. There's sin in
it. Verse 26 says, this woman had
suffered many things of many physicians and had spent all
that she had and was nothing bettered but rather grew worse. She went to all these doctors And that's what men and women
are doing today in religion. They're going to all these doctors,
these people who put D.R. period in front of their name. Reverend doctors, doctors of
divinity. Can you imagine the arrogance
in that? Really, just think about that. Before you get your doctorate,
you have to get your master's. Only a man who has no idea who
God Almighty is would call himself a master of divinity. Our Lord said, except you be
as little children, you can't come in. You just can't come
in. But people will go to this church
to hear a doctor of divinity and they'll buy this book because
a doctor of divinity wrote it. And poor souls who go to men
like that for their spiritual well-being, not only are they
no better for it, they'll actually become worse. They'll actually
become worse. And those men will take all their
money. I thought it was ironic that
that was our Bible study when they'll take all their money.
They really will. I believe in the medical field
there are some people who truly have a heart to help others,
but I'm telling us the truth. In religion, the only motivation
to become a doctor is money. That's the only motivation. It's
always about money. Verse 26 says, this woman had
suffered many things of many physicians. and had spent all
that she had and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse. But verse 27 says, when she had
heard of Jesus. That's such a simple line, but
if you think about your own life, that's the power of God unto
salvation right there. when she heard of Him. She had heard what? It was always
what? She went to this doctor and he
told her what? And she went to that doctor and he told her what?
It was always what? But one day, somebody told her
about Him. Somebody preached Him. Somebody told her the truth,
if you want to know the truth, is about Him. The gospel is about
Him. Verse 27 says, when she had heard
of Jesus, she came in the press behind. This woman came humbly,
she came lowly. Verse 27 says, and touched His
garment. Oh, what a blessed woman. Verse 28 says, for she said,
this is what this woman said, If I may but touch his clothes,
I shall be whole. This man is so powerful. This
man is so wonderful. This man is so glorious. If I
could just touch his clothes, I'll be whole. You know what
you call that? Faith. That's God-given faith. How did she know that? Faith revealed it to her. That's
how faith revealed it to her. Faith brought this woman to Christ. People say, I've heard people
say, I've heard it come out of their mouth. And people say things
like, I led them to Jesus right then and there. No, you didn't. Faith did. God-given faith did. The Father laid hold, the lasso
of faith and Faith brought this woman to Christ.
She said, if I may but touch his clothes, and she touched
him. She touched him. Verse 29 says,
and straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up, and
she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. She
knew she was. And I'm gonna tell you this, I know I am. How do you know? Faith. Well, then you must be pretty
proud of yourself and your faith. No, he just did something and
I just believe him. He caused me to believe him.
She knew she was. Verse 30 says, and Jesus immediately
knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him. Virtue means
force, power, a mighty word. That's what it means. Jesus immediately
knowing in himself that a mighty work had gone out of him. Who
did the work? Well, she did. She's the one
who came to him. She's the one who reached out and touched his
clothes. He did this mighty work. The
virtue belongs to him. He put that faith in her. He
brought her. He put life in her to reach out and touch it. Verse
30, Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone
out of him, turned him about in the press and said, Who touched
my clothes? And his disciples said unto him,
Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched
me? Did he not know? Here all these
people are bumping up next to him and grabbing him and this
and that because they were all waiting for him. And all of a sudden, in the middle
of all this chaos, he said, who touched me? Verse 32 says, and
he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. I love that. What he did when
he said that is, he looked right at her. He looked her right in
the eyes and he said, who touched me? You know what that is? Confession. Did we not all do
that? Who needs me? I do. I do. Well, we all do, I know, but
I do. Verse 33 says, but the woman
fearing and trembling, and that's what the power of God in a sinner
will call fear and trembling. Knowing what was done in her
came and fell down before him and told him all the truth. That's the confession right there.
You know what happens when people get inside that white box right
there? They're just telling all the truth. I'm a sinner. and I deserve nothing but death
and God chose me and He put faith in me and He drew me and here
I am and He put life in me and caused my arm like that man with
the withered hand, reach it out and touch it. And I'm healed
and He did it and I died in Him and I've risen with Him. Verse 33 says the woman fearing
and trembling, knowing what was done in her, not what she had
done. Came and fell down before him
and told him all the truth. This woman is doing the exact
same thing that lunatic did. All she's doing is telling him
how great things the Lord had done for her. Told him all the
truth. And that's all a sinner can confess.
Not what I've done for him is what he's done for me. I'm just
a sinner saved by grace. This is my story. To God be the
glory. I'm only a sinner saved by grace. Verse 34 says, And he said unto
her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. Go in peace,
and behold, thy plague is finished. You did something now and you
finished the process. No, the faith that I have given
has accomplished its work and it's over. It's finished. Go
in peace. Now, the next two verses are
the reason I wanted to look at both stories this morning. Verse
35 says, while he yet spake, man, I love this. Man, I love
this. Our Lord is in the middle of
a conversation with this woman. Here's this whole crowd of people
leaving the ship. And Jairus came and fell down
and said, Lord, would you please come to my house and touch my
daughter? And he said, I will. So the Lord is letting Jairus
lead him to his house. He knows where Jairus lives.
But Jairus is right next to him. And verse 35 says, While he yet
spake, There came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain
which said, thy daughter is dead. Why troublest thou the master
any further? They were there with her and
she died. And so they come out and they
found this multitude and they made their way through the multitude
and they walk up to Jairus and they said, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Your little girl
is dead. It won't do you any good to trouble
the master any further. Now our Lord is in this great
crowd, he's talking to all these people are talking amongst themselves,
this woman has come up now and here he is talking to her and
he said, daughter, thy faith has saved thee, go in peace. And here's Jairus and the Lord
knows what's going on right here and all these people come and
they're talking to Jairus and can you imagine how he just fell? And I'm sure this whole time
Jairus was happy for this woman, but there's one person on Jairus'
mind. Lord, we have to go. We have to go. She's at the point
of death. And the Lord is dealing with
this woman so lovingly, so kindly, and then all of a sudden the
news comes, she's dead. No need to trouble the Master
any further. Verse 36 says, as soon as Jesus heard the word
that was spoken, he said unto the ruler of the
synagogue, now here he is talking to this woman, he pauses his
conversation, he looks straight at Jairus, and he says, be not
afraid, only believe. That's my favorite part. Is all this on purpose or not
on purpose? Lord, we don't have time for
this. Oh yes, we do. He's dealing with this woman
and he said, one second, be not afraid, only believe. My faith
hath made thee whole, go in peace. Did our Lord know that this woman
was going to come and interrupt their journey? Hold up their journey. Our Lord
purposed for that to happen. Why? So Jairus's daughter could
die. Why? So the son of God might
be glorified. It's always the case. Mary and
Martha sent messengers to him saying, Lord, behold, he whom
thou lovest is sick, our brother Lazarus. When the Lord heard
that, he stayed in his place for two days. Why? So Lazarus could die. Why? So the Son of God might
be glorified. It's always and every time we
don't understand, Lord, we don't have time for this. I need you
to act now!" He was. He was on his way to Jairus'
house. He does everything that the Son
of God might be glorified. Aren't we delighted for that?
That His power might be seen, that faith might be increased. We wouldn't see the glory of
Jairus' story if it was not for this woman. And we would have
never seen the glory of this woman's story if it was not for
Jairus. What if our Lord would have got
off the ship and gone the other way? But he didn't. He allowed Jairus' daughter to
get sick so Jairus could come and fall down at his feet and
beg him, come to my house so the Lord could pass by that way
so a woman could reach out and touch the Lord. It's all on purpose. It's all on purpose. It fits
together so perfectly. Yeah, but he'll be too busy.
No, you'll find he's not too busy to hear your heart's cry. He is passing by this moment
your need to supply. Reach out and touch the Lord
as he goes by. He was being thronged by this
multitude. What made this woman's touch
any different from everybody else? Three things. They were all touching him. What
made hers any different? Three things. Number one, she
had a touch of need. True need. She said back in verse
28, if I may touch. Me. I need this. Number two, she had a persuaded
touch. An objective, singular touch. Paul said, I know whom I'm persuaded. Verse 28, she said, if I may
touch His clothes, it has to be Him. It has to be Him. And number three, she had a touch
of faith. She said in verse 28, I shall be whole. I believe it. I believe it. If God has given
you and me the ability, let's lay hold of Christ like that.
Like that. I need Him. And I'll be whole,
I believe him. Verse 36, as soon as Jesus heard
the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue,
be not afraid, only believe. And he suffered no man to follow
him save Peter and James and John, the brother of James. I
thought about the fact that those three men, they were always such
privileged men, weren't they? Peter, James, and John. Our Lord
let those three men in on so many wonderful intimate dealings
of His. But through His Spirit and His
Word, we are just as blessed as they are. He's brought us
in right there with Him. Verse 37, He suffered no man
to follow Him save Peter and James and John, the brother of
James. And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue,
and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith
unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? The damsel is not dead,
but sleepeth." I want that to be burned into
my heart. I want that to be absolutely burned into my heart, after seeing
what Christ has done. After seeing what he has accomplished
for you and me in his own blood, after seeing that his death has
abolished death, after seeing his promises, after knowing his
love, why do I make such a do about nothing? He said, why are
you making all this a do? Be not afraid, only believe.
Lord, help me to do that. Be not afraid, only believe. He said, the damsel is not dead,
but sleepeth. And that can be said about every
single child of God that He's chosen to save. He redeemed us
to life. He redeemed us to life. You know,
He redeemed us to what? To God. To life, everlasting
life. He that liveth and believeth
in Christ shall never die. But verse 40 says, they laughed
him to scorn. You know why they did that? It's
because they didn't have faith from him. They had not received
a gift from him. He had not done anything for
them. If the Lord does anything for us, oh, it's such goodness,
such mercy. And they didn't believe him.
They didn't believe his word. Verse 40. He laughed him to scorn,
but when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and
the mother of the damsel and them that were with him and entered
in where the damsel was lying. He came to her in her condition. And that's what he did for us.
In our condition, he came to her where she was lying. Verse
41. And he took the damsel by the
hand and said unto her, Talitha kumai, which is being interpreted,
damsel I say unto thee arise. And that right there is the only
way a dead sinner can arise. It's through the work of and
the salvation of and it's by the hand of Christ alone. We
arose with Him, in Him. Verse 42, In straightway the
damsel arose and walked, for she was of the age of twelve
years, and they were astonished with a great astonishment. When
our Lord saves, He saves. He does. He saves. When He calls,
sinners come. They just do. They just do. There is no begging and there
is no pleading with God. At His command, sinners arise. Verse 43 says, And He charged
them straightly that no man should know it, and commanded that something
should be given her to eat. He said, Give her something to
eat. She's alive. She's alive. Give her something
to eat. In Christ, Because of Christ, she now lives and moves
and has her being. And because of Christ, so do
we. Every bit of this, all the working of it, all the doing
of it, the saving in it, is in His hand. It's always going to
be that way. So be not afraid, only believe. Wouldn't that be wonderful if
the Lord could allow us to do that? Be not afraid, only believe. But I keep getting all this bad
news. Be not afraid, only believe. But I thought it was going to
go differently. Be not afraid, only believe. Be not afraid, only believe.
All right, let's stand together.
