The Bible teaches that faith is obtained as a gift from God, not something earned by human effort.
In 2 Peter 1:1, Simon Peter writes to those 'that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.' This indicates that faith is something we receive, not attain through our works or efforts. Ephesians 2:8-9 elaborates this further by stating, 'For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.' Therefore, faith is a divine gift that God imparts to those whom He has chosen, emphasizing His sovereignty in salvation.
2 Peter 1:1, Ephesians 2:8-9
Faith is essential for Christians because it connects them to God and seals their salvation in Jesus Christ.
Faith is fundamentally the means by which Christians believe and trust in God and His promises. Hebrews 11:6 states, 'But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.' This highlights that faith is not merely an intellectual ascent but a relational trust in God as the sovereign creator and redeemer. Moreover, 1 John 5:12 asserts, 'He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.' Thus, faith in Jesus Christ is critical as it is through faith that believers are united with Him and assured of eternal life.
Hebrews 11:6, 1 John 5:12
We know we have saving faith if Christ is precious to us and we respond to His call.
The Scripture provides signs to help us discern the presence of saving faith in our lives. For instance, 2 Corinthians 13:5 encourages believers to examine themselves to see whether they are in the faith. A fundamental evidence of saving faith is a love for Christ and a desire to hear His Word. Paul mentioned that 'Christ is in you, unless indeed you are disqualified' (2 Corinthians 13:5). Moreover, if you find Christ invaluable, as expressed in 1 Peter 2:7, 'To you who believe, He is precious,' that is a strong indication of genuine faith. Ultimately, the evidence of saving faith is a life transformed by the Holy Spirit, leading us to continually seek Christ and embrace His gospel.
2 Corinthians 13:5, 1 Peter 2:7
While faith alone justifies, true faith is evidenced by good works in the life of a believer.
Faith and works are closely related within the context of salvation. Ephesians 2:8-10 clarifies that we are saved by grace through faith and subsequently created for good works: 'For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.' This indicates that while our works do not save us, they are a natural outflow of true faith. James 2:26 articulates this well: 'For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.' Therefore, genuine saving faith creates a transformed heart that expresses itself through obedience and good deeds.
