Choice Puritan Devotional

The sermon titled "You Blind Fools!" by Thomas Watson centers on the theological doctrine of the surpassing value of Christ in the life of a believer. Watson argues that Christ's worth transcends that of any earthly possession or honor, supporting his assertions with Scripture, including Ephesians 3:8, which speaks of the unsearchable riches of Christ. He illustrates the foolishness of prioritizing worldly pleasures over Christ, drawing an analogy between choosing a worthless apple over a priceless diamond. The sermon emphasizes that true Christians regard Christ as their chief treasure, and their value of Him dictates their actions, choices, and ultimately their eternal fate. Thus, Watson compels believers to recognize and uphold the supreme worth of Christ in their daily lives, warning against the blindness of those who fail to do so.

Key Quotes

“We cannot raise our esteem of Christ high enough. He is beyond all value.”

“How many such idiots are there who choose the gaudy, empty things of this world before the Prince of Glory?”

“A child of God can lack health and friends, but he cannot lack Christ.”

“He who prices gold will dig for it in the mine.”

What does the Bible say about the value of Christ?

The Bible teaches that Christ is invaluable and treasured above all, as seen in Ephesians 3:8.

The Scriptures reveal that Christ is precious beyond measure; His virtues, name, and sacrifice hold eternal value far surpassing worldly treasures. In Ephesians 3:8, Paul speaks of the unsearchable riches of Christ, emphasizing that His worth cannot even be fully comprehended by the most exalted beings. This is a direct call for believers to recognize Christ as their chief treasure, the focal point of their hope and joy. He stands above all other earthly pursuits, calling us to evaluate our lives and desires in the light of His surpassing worth, as the pearl of great price in Matthew 13:46.

Ephesians 3:8, Matthew 13:46

Why is it important for Christians to prize Christ?

Prizing Christ above all is crucial for Christians as it defines their identity and source of fulfillment.

For a Christian, prizing Christ is essential, as it shapes their relationship with God and their understanding of life’s purpose. True believers find themselves unable to live without Christ, much like Rachel's longing for children in Genesis 30:1. Without Christ, spiritual life is unsustainable, demonstrating the depth of dependence that believers have on Him. In contrast, those who place their trust in worldly pleasures reveal a lack of true understanding regarding the eternal value of Christ. This prioritization inspires passion and persistence in the pursuit of God, as reflected in Psalm 63:8, where the psalmist expresses his earnest desire for God, not letting go of this pursuit.

Genesis 30:1, Psalm 63:8

How do we know that Christ is the greatest treasure?

We recognize Christ as the greatest treasure through Scripture's teachings on His worth compared to worldly gain.

The recognition of Christ as the greatest treasure is deeply embedded in the teachings of the Bible. Hebrews 11:26 illustrates how Moses valued disgrace for the sake of Christ over the fleeting treasures of Egypt, highlighting that the worth of Christ transcends all earthly accolades and riches. This perspective is reinforced throughout the Scriptures, where believers are called to evaluate their attachments and seek the eternal over the ephemeral. When one truly understands the gravity of their sin and the grace bestowed through Christ's sacrifice, they cannot help but view Him as their ultimate and precious possession, as the narratives of the Gospels further illustrate His sacrificial love.

Hebrews 11:26

What are the signs that someone truly values Christ?

Signs of truly valuing Christ include a deep longing for Him, willingness to sacrifice for Him, and finding joy in His presence.

Those who truly value Christ exhibit a profound longing for Him and recognize that earthly goods cannot satisfy their deepest desires. This longing is akin to the fervor expressed by Rachel in Genesis 30:1, illustrating a spiritual desperation for communion with God. Additionally, such individuals demonstrate a readiness to part with earthly pleasures and comforts for the sake of Christ, emphasizing their understanding of His superior worth. The joys found in Christ elevate Him beyond all transitory pleasures, as affirmed in the Psalms. A vibrant life in relationship with Christ involves sacrifice, commitment, and a joy that remains unshaken even when worldly comforts fade, reflecting the internalization of Christ's value.

Yes, He is very precious to you who believe. There is nothing in Christ but what is precious. His name is precious. His virtues are precious. His blood is precious, more precious than the world. The rose of Sharon is always sweet. We cannot prize Christ at too high a rate. We may prize other things above their value, and that is our sin. We commonly overrate the creature. We think there is more in it than there is. Therefore God withers our gourd because we overprice it.

But we cannot raise our esteem of Christ high enough. He is beyond all value. There is no ruby or diamond, but the jeweler can set a fair price on it. But Christ's worth can never be fully known. No seraphim can set a due value on Him. His riches are unsearchable. Ephesians 3 verse 8.

Christ is more precious than heaven. True Christians prize Christ as most precious. He is their chief treasure and delight. The reason why millions perish is because they do not prize Christ. The ungodly choose things of no value before Christ. You blind fools! If a person chooses an apple before a priceless diamond, he is judged to be a fool. How many such idiots are there who choose the gaudy, empty things of this world before the Prince of Glory? Give a baby a rattle, and it will not want gold. Give a worldling his lusts, and he will be content enough without Christ.

We value Christ above honor and riches. This pearl of great price lies nearest our heart. He who prizes Christ esteems the gleanings of Christ better than the world's vintage. He counts the worst things of Christ better than the best things of the world. Moses regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt. Hebrews 11 verse 26.

If we are the prisers of Christ, we cannot live without him. A man may live without music, but not without food. A child of God can lack health and friends, but he cannot lack Christ. Give me children, said Rachel, or else I die, Genesis 30 verse 1. So the soul says, give me Christ or else I shall die. Give me one drop of the water of life to quench my thirst.

If we are prisers of Christ, then we shall not complain at any pains to get him. He who prices gold will dig for it in the mine. My soul follows hard after God. Psalm 63 verse 8. He in whose eye Christ is precious never rests until he has gained him. I sought him whom my soul loves. I held him and would not let him go. Canticles 3 verses 1 and 4.

If we are prizers of Christ, then we take great pleasure in Christ. What joy a man takes in that which he counts his treasure! He who prizes Christ makes him his greatest joy. He can delight in Christ when earthly delights are gone. Though a flower in a man's garden dies, he can still delight in his money and jewels. He who esteems Christ can solace himself in Christ when there is a dearth of all other comforts.

If we are prizers of Christ, then we will part with our dearest pleasures for Him. He who esteems Christ will pull out that lust which is as precious as his right eye. He who sets a high value on Christ will set his feet on the neck of his sins. How can they be said to prize Christ who will not leave a vanity for Him, or who prefer a damning pleasure before a saving Christ?
