THE HORRENDOUS SIN OF APOSTASY TRULY, TRULY, I TELL YOU, ONE OF YOU WILL BETRAY ME. John 13 21. There are few sins in Scripture portrayed with greater horror, than apostasy. The adultery may return, the thief may be forgiven, and the persecutor may become a preacher, as Saul of Tarsus did. But apostasy is the deliberate turning away from the Lord Jesus, whom one has professed to know. It is Judas exchanging Jesus for silver, Demas loving the present world, and those who once walked with Jesus, turning their backs upon him. Every believer should tremble at the warnings of scripture. These warnings are not written to produce despair, but holy fear, watchfulness, and perseverance.

1. The Definition of Apostasy Apostasy is the deliberate abandonment of the truth once professed, and the forsaking of Jesus after receiving the knowledge of the Gospel. It is not merely stumbling into sin like Peter, who bitterly repented. It is a settled departure from Jesus, his truth, and his salvation. So he said to the Jews who had believed him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples. John 8 31 True disciples persevere. Saving faith is not measured by a promising beginning, but by a faithful continuance in sound doctrine and a holy life. To forsake either, is to begin drifting toward spiritual ruin.

2. The Frequency of Apostasy Scripture presents apostasy as tragically common. From that time on, many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. John 6 66. The crowd that admired Jesus disappeared when his teaching became costly. Many wanted miracles without repentance, blessings without obedience, and a kingdom without a cross. Even more sobering is Christ's declaration. Have I not chosen you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil. John 6 70. Judas walked with Jesus for three years. He heard every sermon, witnessed every miracle, and sat at the Last Supper. Yet his heart remained unchanged. External privileges never guarantee internal grace. the church has always contained both wheat and tares. mere profession of jesus, is not possession of him.

3. the steps to apostasy. apostasy does not happen overnight. first, apostasy is easy. spiritual decline requires no effort. prayer is neglected. scripture is ignored. fellowship becomes optional. sin is tolerated. and the conscience gradually grows dull. second, apostasy is imperceptible. few intend to abandon jesus. the drift is slow, almost unnoticed, until the heart has wandered far from its first love. third, apostasy is deceptive. pride whispers, it could never happen to me. scripture therefore warns, let him who thinks he stands, take heed lest he fall. first corinthians 10 12. the safest christian is the one who walks humbly, depends continually upon jesus, and distrusts personal strength.

4. The dangers of apostasy No danger is greater than departing from the Living God. Apostasy hardens the conscience. Truth once cherished becomes despised. Convictions that once restrained sin, disappear. The heart grows cold, prayer becomes empty, worship becomes burdensome, and eventually Jesus himself becomes unwelcome. Every step away from Jesus is a step toward spiritual darkness. The great danger is not merely losing religious enthusiasm, but becoming an enemy of the Savior once professed.

5. The wickedness of apostasy. Nothing displays the ugliness of apostasy, more vividly than Judas Iscariot. He betrayed perfect love. He betrayed infinite holiness. He betrayed the Son of God, with a kiss. The Judas kiss remains one of history's darkest acts. Outward affection concealed inward treachery. What appeared to be devotion, was actually betrayal. apostasy is not merely rejecting doctrine. it is betraying the gracious savior who freely offered mercy. it treats the lord jesus as unworthy of trust, and his sin atoning sacrifice as worthless. what ingratitude. what hardness of heart. what dreadful wickedness.

6. the punishment of apostasy. Scripture speaks with terrifying clarity concerning those who knowingly reject Jesus after receiving the knowledge of the truth. How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of Grace? Hebrews 10 29 the apostate tramples upon the son of god. the sin atoning blood that alone saves sinners, is treated as worthless. the spirit of grace is insulted. such a person has only. a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of god. hebrews 10 27. If I leave the Lord Jesus, I can expect nothing but judgment.

I become the object of divine justice. I become a mark for all the arrows of God's righteous vengeance. All who trample upon the blood of Jesus, shall become monuments of the eternal wrath of God, unless God grants genuine repentance. Jesus himself commands, Remember Lot's wife. She left Sodom outwardly, but her heart remained behind. Looking back, revealed where her true treasure was.

7. Pray for preserving grace. Every true believer should pray daily for God's preserving grace, rather than trusting personal resolve. Hold me up, and I shall be safe. Psalm 119 117 Our confidence rests not in the strength of our grip upon Jesus, but in his faithful power to preserve his people. The believer perseveres, because God preserves him. Therefore, pray for humility, steadfast faith, love for the truth, hatred of sin, delight in God's Word, and endurance to the end.

8. Final Warning the warnings of scripture are gods gracious gifts. they call professing believers to examine themselves, cling to jesus, and persevere in faith. see to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living god. hebrews 3 12. do not presume upon a previous profession. walk closely with jesus. treasure his word. mortify sin. keep your eyes fixed upon the saviour who alone is able to keep his people from falling. the tragedy of judas stands forever as a solemn warning. The preserving grace of Jesus stands forever as the believer's only hope. May every professing Christian heed the warning. Flee from every path that leads away from Jesus, and persevere in faith and a godly life, until the end.
