The Bible refers to Jesus as the Good Shepherd who protects, provides for, and leads His people out of bondage.
In John 10:11, Jesus declares, 'I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.' This reflects His sacrificial love and commitment to His people. Just as Cyrus was appointed to shepherd Israel, Christ, our Shepherd, releases us from the bondage of sin and the law, leading us into unparalleled freedom and abundant life. He protects His flock fiercely, ensuring that no harm comes to them, even from themselves, which is a source of great comfort for believers.
John 10:11, Isaiah 44:28
Christ is the fulfillment of God's promises as He accomplishes all that the Father intended, including the salvation of His people.
God's sovereignty is clearly displayed in the prophetic words given about Cyrus, who would free the Israelites, hundreds of years before he was born. This pattern of divine foreknowledge underscores the certainty that Christ, as our Cyrus, fulfills all that was foretold concerning the Messiah. In Matthew 1:21, it is stated that Jesus will save His people from their sins, showcasing the divine plan of redemption established before the foundation of the world. As believers, we can rest assured that all God’s promises find their 'Yes' in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20).
Matthew 1:21, 2 Corinthians 1:20
Jesus is referred to as our Cyrus because He acts as a deliverer, much like Cyrus delivered Israel from Babylonian captivity.
Cyrus was foretold as a deliverer for Israel, serving as a type of Christ who ultimately delivers His people from the captivity of sin and death. Isaiah 45 shows God anointing Cyrus to accomplish His will, and similarly, Christ, anointed by the Father, came to accomplish the critical task of salvation. Just as Cyrus led His people back to Jerusalem, Jesus brings His people home to eternal life, reinforcing His role as the Good Shepherd and Savior of His flock.
Isaiah 45:1-4, John 10:11
God's sovereignty ensures that salvation is entirely His work, securing the souls of His chosen people through Christ.
The doctrine of God's sovereignty asserts that He is in full control over all events, including who comes to faith. Scriptures such as Romans 8:28-30 affirm that those He predestined, He called and justified, highlighting the inviolable link between God's will and the salvation process. It demonstrates that Christ’s work on the cross was predestined, ensuring that there is no chance of failure; all whom the Father has given to the Son will come to Him (John 6:37). This truth deepens our reliance on God for our salvation, acknowledging that it is His grace that grants us faith and repentance.
Romans 8:28-30, John 6:37
Christ is our treasure as He embodies all spiritual blessings and the fullness of our needs.
In Malachi 3:17, God refers to His people as His special treasure, reflecting the deep affection and value placed upon them. Christ, as our treasure, signifies that true worth and satisfaction come from Him, who fulfills every spiritual need, including righteousness, forgiveness, and eternal life. All we have or achieve is but rubbish compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus as our Lord (Philippians 3:8). Through Christ's victory and relationship, believers are assured of their identity and value as His peculiar people, enriching their lives in ways beyond earthly treasures.
Malachi 3:17, Philippians 3:8
