John 13:31-35
Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
What does the Bible say about the glory of God in Christ's death?

The Bible states that God's glory is revealed in the death of Christ, as He accomplished salvation for mankind.

The glory of God is prominently displayed in the death of Christ, which was ordained from all eternity as a means to redeem His people. In John 13:31-32, Jesus declares that 'now is the Son of Man glorified,' indicating that His imminent sacrifice is part of God's divine plan to bring glory to Himself. The cross, far from being a symbol of defeat, is the ultimate demonstration of God's justice, mercy, love, and grace. As stated in Galatians 6:14, 'God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,' highlighting that God's glory shines brightest through the crucifixion and subsequent resurrection of Christ.

John 13:31-32, Galatians 6:14

How do we know God is sovereign in salvation?

Scripture affirms that God is sovereign over all aspects of salvation, as seen in the decrees and actions leading to Christ's crucifixion.

The sovereignty of God in salvation is evident throughout Scripture, particularly in the New Testament accounts of Jesus’ death. The events surrounding Judas' betrayal were predetermined by God, serving to fulfill prophecy and demonstrate His authority over salvation history (John 6:70). The Apostle Peter explicitly mentions this in Acts 2:23 when he states that Jesus was 'delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God.' This highlights that God is not reacting to events, but rather orchestrating them according to His sovereign will, ensuring that all who are saved are chosen by His grace before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).

John 6:70, Acts 2:23, Ephesians 1:4

Why is the atonement of Christ essential for salvation?

The atonement of Christ is essential as it fulfills divine justice and provides redemption for believers.

The atonement of Christ is central to the Christian faith because it addresses the penalty for sin, which is death, and satisfies the justice of God. As articulated in Romans 3:24-25, believers are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood. His sacrifice not only reconciles us to God but also honors the righteous requirements of the law, making it possible for God to be just while justifying the ungodly (Romans 4:5). The resurrection of Christ further confirms that His atonement was sufficient and effective for securing our salvation, thus restoring our relationship with God and securing eternal life for all who believe.

John chapter 13. I'm taking the title for the
message from verse 31. John 13 verse 31. Therefore when he was gone out,
that is, Judas the betrayer had gone out, the Lord said to those
remaining apostles, now, right now, is the Son of Man. The Son of Man here is none other
than God the Son. Son of Man, glorified. And God, and God is glorified
in Him. So the title of the message is,
Now is the Son of Man glorified. The Lord Jesus Christ here is
referring to that salvation that He would accomplish by giving
His life a ransom for many. Remember last week we read from
Matthew 20, 28 where the Lord said, I came not to be ministered
unto, but to minister and to give my life a ransom for many. He's talking about here giving
His life as a sacrifice for our sin. He's talking about willingly. He said, no man takes my life
from me. I lay it down of myself. I have
power to lay it down. I have power to take it again.
This commandment have I received of my Father. He willingly gave
Himself for us. He became obedient unto death,
even the death of the cross. Now is the Son of Man glorified. How can he be glorified in his
death? God has ordained this unto the
glory of God. You remember from Galatians chapter
6 where the Apostle writes, God forbid I should glory save in
the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. God is glorified in the Lord
Jesus Christ dying for our sins according to Scripture. Now we
read in these verses preceding how Judas was exposed as the
one who would betray the Lord, sell out the Lord for 30 pieces
of silver. While this was a great shock
to the apostles that one would betray the Lord, yet We know
this, it was ordained from all eternity. It was decreed of God,
determined by God from all eternity. The Lord knew exactly who Judas
was when He chose him. It says in chapter 6 verse 70,
I think we read this a week or so ago, when the Lord said, I've
chosen you twelve, And one of you is a devil, demon possessed. Over here in John chapter 17,
the Lord refers to this again in John 17 verse 12 about the
betrayal of Judas. John 17 verse 12, he said, with
them in the world. This is his prayer unto the Father
for us. I kept them in thy name, those
that thou gavest me I've kept, and none of them is lost but
the son of perdition. And that word perdition is son
of condemnation. That the scripture might be fulfilled. And notice the marginal reference
there, it says Psalm 109 verse 7. Here's what it says in Psalm
109 verse 7. When he shall be judged, let
him be condemned. Speaking of Judas, let his prayer
become sin. Let his days be few. Let another
take his office. And another did. Who was that
other? Well, the Apostle Paul. Back
in chapter 13, speaking of Judas, in verse 18 and 19, he said,
I speak not of you all, For I know whom I have chosen, but that
the Scripture may be fulfilled. He that eateth bread with me,"
this is from Psalm 41.9, "...had fellowship with the Lord, ate
bread, spent three years with him, saw everything he did, all
the miracles he did, heard every word he said, had no effect upon
his heart, had lifted up his heel against me." What is that?
That's rebellion. That's what a wild ass's colt
does when he doesn't like his master. He kicks up his heels
and he would kick you right in the head and do you in if he
could. He that eateth of bread hath lifted up his heels against
me. Now I tell you before it come to pass that when it is
come to pass that you may believe that I am. Just as the Lord said
it would happen, it did happen. After Judas went out, it says
in verse 30, he then having received this morsel of bread that the
Lord had dipped and gave it to him, and the Lord said, what
you need to do, you need to do it right now, and immediately
went out. And it was night time. Verse
31 now, Therefore, when he was the betrayer gone out, the Lord
Jesus Christ said to these remaining men, Now is the Son of Man glorified. Now, it seems kind of a contradiction
there. Here's one that's betrayed the
Lord and sold him out, and yet out of this betrayal, out of
this inspiration that the devil puts in the heart of Judas, Judas
did what he wanted to do, but yet he was demon-inspired. God
said, I'm going to get glory out of that. I'm going to get
glory out of that. Now is the Son of Man glorified,
and God is glorified in Him. Now notice how many times in
these two verses, I counted five times. Did you see that? Five
times in these two verses that the Lord said, I'm going to be
glorified. Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified
in Him. If God be glorified in him, in
Christ, God shall also glorify him with himself, and shall straightway
immediately glorify him." Five times in these two verses. Something
special about his glory, is it not? In these two verses, the
glory of God is given these many times. You see, the grand design
of everything that God does is for His glory, and especially
the grand design of redemption. It's all about His glory, isn't
it? No wonder the psalm of the redeemed
in heaven is worthy as the lamb that was slain to receive all
Honor, glory, and blessing both now and forever. In John 17, peek over there,
John 17 verse 1. These words spake Jesus and lifted
up his eyes to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify
thy son, that thy son also may glorify thee. You see, everything
about salvation, creation, providence, all revolves around the greater
glory of God, that everything that God does is always brought
to pass unto His glory, especially, especially with emphasis upon
the gospel. Every sinner He saves, who gets
the glory? Huh? Every sinner He saves, who
gets the glory? To God be the glory, great things
He has done. The gospel is called the gospel
of God. The gospel of His grace is called
the gospel of His glory, glory, glory. But of Him are you in
Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, righteousness,
sanctification, and redemption, that according as it is written.
Jeremiah 17 he that would glory let him glory only in the Lord
and we do glory in him now verse 31 again now is the son of man
and The God-man mediator. This is the one who is God Almighty
manifest in the flesh. Come to seek and to save his
people. Come to lay down his life. Now
is the Son of Man glorified. Now we know he's talking about
his atonement. We know he's talking about his
blood redemption. You remember we saw this once
before back in chapter Chapter 12, I believe it is, verse 23.
Chapter 12, verse 23. Turn back over there, John 12,
23. Every time he talks about his death, his atonement, his
priestly work, his mediation, his intercession, his substitutionary
work, it's always connected with his glory, isn't it? His glory,
his glory. The hours come, John 12, 23,
that the Son of Man should be glorified Verily I say unto you,
except a corn of wheat, a kernel of wheat fall into the ground
and die, it abides alone. But if it die, it bringeth forth
much fruit. There is much fruit unto his
glory, much accomplished by the fruit of his death. It brings
much glory to the Son and much glory to the Father. But notice
something here. The Lord does not refer to his
death as a defeat. It doesn't refer to His death
as a murder, nor a disgrace, but rather His glory. Isn't that amazing? How can His
death be His glory? Because through His atoning death,
through His substitutionary satisfying sacrifice, we have a glorious
victory. Over sin, He put it away. Over death, He conquered it.
Over hell, He arose to conquer all enemies. Over Satan, He's
crushed his dominion. He's crushed his head. He said
in Revelation 1, 18, I'm He that liveth and was dead. Behold,
I'm alive forevermore. I have the keys of hell and death. For to this end, to this purpose,
Christ both died and rose and revived that He might be Lord.
You see, His death is victory. It's not defeat. Never think
of the atoning death of the Lord Jesus Christ as a defeat. It's
victory. It's victory. You see, through
the Lord Jesus Christ, much is accomplished. There's much fruit
to the glory of God in the Lord Jesus Christ crucified. Him being delivered by the determinant
counsel and foreknowledge of God. He's the Lamb slain before
the foundation of the world. Before Adam's sin, the Lord Jesus
Christ stood as a charity of the everlasting covenant of grace.
Through Christ crucified, sin is put away. John, turn over
to 1st John and maybe put a marker there because we're going to
come back in a minute. Over to 1st John, over there by the revelation,
1st, 2nd Peter, then 1st John. Through the Lord Jesus Christ
crucified, that is the only way that sin is put away. The only
way that we are redeemed, delivered from the consequences of sin
and justice in the wrath of God, we are redeemed with the precious
blood of Christ. Let's read about it here in 1
John. 1st John chapter 1 look at verse 7 1st John 1 7 if we
walk in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship
one with another and the blood of Jesus Christ his son cleanses
us from all our sin now who gets the glory there he does who cleanses
us from all our sin he does he does now stay right here in 1st
John look at chapter 2 Verse 12, 1 John 2, 12. I write unto
you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his
name's sake. Now who gets the glory there?
Not you. Not you, oh no. He does, it's
his name's sake. Then in chapter three, look at
verse five. 1 John chapter three, verse five. And you know that he was manifested
to take away our sin. Well, did he get it done? Did
He attempt to, or did He actually take away our sin? He was manifested
to take away our sin, and in Him is no sin. Now, did He get the job done?
Absolutely. Delivered for our offenses and
raised again for our justification. Look at 1 John chapter 4, 1 John
chapter 4 verse 10. You see, in all of this, who
gets the glory? You know who gets the glory.
Look at verse 10. Herein is love, not that we love
God, but that He loved us, and He sent His Son to be the propitiation. Boy, that's a big word. Mercy
seeds, what the word is. We studied about that this morning.
He's our mercy seed. He's our propitiation. He is
the putting away of our sin. Now, who gets the glory? Well, He did. He does. He gets
all the glory. You see, The Son of Man, now
is the Son of Man glorified. So through Christ crucified,
sin is put away. Through the Lord Jesus Christ
crucified, righteousness is established. Righteousness is established.
The law of God is honored. Turn to Roman chapter four. Daniel says in his prophecy,
Daniel 9, 24, that the Lord Jesus Christ would bring in an everlasting
righteousness, that He would establish an everlasting righteousness
for His covenant sheep. Romans chapter 4, look at verse
6. Even as David also described the blessedness of the man to
whom the Lord imputed, and to whom God imputed righteousness,
Righteousness, this is a justifying righteousness before God without
works. Saying, blessed are they whose
iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is
the man to whom the Lord will not charge sin. Who can lay anything
to the charge of God elected is God that justify. Who is he
that condemneth? Huh? Christ had died. A rather is risen again, who
is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession
for us, Romans 8, 32-35. You see, through the Lord Jesus
Christ, righteousness is established. Through the Lord Jesus Christ,
crucified sin is put away. Now, you see what he's saying
here? Now is the Son of Man glorified. Through the Lord Jesus Christ,
crucified salvation accomplished. When he died on Calvary, one
of the last things he said before he gave up his spirit He said,
it is finished. It's done. Salvation is accomplished. He actually accomplished salvation
by His bloody, atoning, redeeming, glorious death. In all of that, God is glorified. Now look at verse 31 again, back
in our text. Now the Son of Man glorified,
and God is glorified in Him. You see that? If God, verse 32,
if God be glorified in him, God the Father, be glorified in him
and Christ crucified, God shall also glorify him with himself
and shall straightway, immediately glorify him. Honor Him. Establish Him. God the Father
is glorified in the Lord Jesus Christ crucified. In the Lord
Jesus Christ crucified, all the attributes of God are honored
at the cross. All the attributes of God are
honored at Calvary. You remember from Psalm 85 verse
10, mercy and truth are met together. Righteousness and peace have
kissed each other. Where did that happen? At the
cross. In the Lord Jesus Christ crucified, God is glorified in
his mercy. But God who is rich in mercy
for his great love were with he loved us even when we were
dead in trespasses and in sin. His mercy is honored, but also
his justice is satisfied. His justice is honored, the wrath
of God fell upon the Lord Jesus Christ. It says in Zechariah
13, the Waco sword against the shepherd, against the man that
is my fellow, smite the shepherd, saith the Lord. As the Lord Jesus
Christ was made sin for us, the justice, holy justice of God's
wrath fell upon Him, satisfying God's holy law and justice."
Mercy is honored. Justice is honored. His love
is manifested. God so loved that He gave. In
John 13, you remember John 13 verse 1? Having loved His own
which are in the world, He loved them unto the end. We just read
a moment ago in 1 John 4.10. here in His love, not that we
love God, but that He loved us. You see, His love is honored,
His mercy is honored, but also the wrath of God is satisfied. It pleased God to bruise Him
in our room and in our state. God commendeth His love toward
us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. When we were yet without strength,
the Lord Jesus Christ died for the ungodly. There His love is
honored, His wrath is satisfied. In Christ crucified, the wrath
of God fell upon Him without any mixture of mercy. There's
no wrath left for the believer, is there? There is therefore
now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. So His
love is honored, His wrath is honored, glorified, His mercy
is glorified, His justice is satisfied, He has grace. How
about His grace? Well, His grace is honored too,
isn't it? Justified freely by His grace to the redemption that
is in the Lord Jesus Christ, but also His holiness is magnified. His holiness is honored. All
of this enables God to do what? to be just and to justify the
ungodly. All this enables God to be a
just God and Savior. All this enables God to save
this sinner, not at the expense of His holiness, that He can
show mercy to such a sinner as I am and yet magnify His holy
law in the Lord Jesus Christ crucified. You see how this is
necessary? You see how this honors and glorifies
God Almighty? All the attributes of God are
magnified. All of this enables God to save
us, not at the expense of His holy character. God is love. but not at the expense of His
holiness. God is gracious, but not at the expense of His wrath
and His justice. All things must be in complete
harmony. And all that happens and glorifies
all the attributes of God in Christ and Him crucified. Now
look at the last part of verse 32. If God be glorified in him, God
shall also glorify him with himself, and shall straightway, right
now, immediately glorify him." Straightway, immediately glorify
him with himself. Now turn to John 17 again. Remember
our Lord told that dying thief, remember? In the day, he said,
today, you'll be with me where? Glory, in paradise. Immediately,
he said, I'm going to glorify you upon your death. Look at
verse 2, John 17, As thou hast given him power over all flesh,
that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given
him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the
only true God, Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. I left the
word A-N-D off on purpose. I have glorified thee on the
earth. I finished the work you gave me to do. And now, look
at verse five, but now, now will the Son of Man glorify. Oh Father,
glorify thou me with thine own self, with the glory which I
had with thee before the world was. God hath highly exalted
him, given him a name which is above every name, that that name
every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess that he is Lord
to the glory of God the Father. The Lord having accomplished
our salvation, was raised from the dead, ascended to glory,
and is seated in the heavenlies on the throne at the right hand
of God." I'm talking about the Son of Man. He said the Son of
Man. Now, we know it's the Son of
God, God the Son, but the Son of Man. that glorified body of
the God-man mediator walked out of that tomb on the third day,
was seen among many brethren at one time, one time over 500
brethren at once. This was not a fiction or a fairy
tale. This was the real reality of
His resurrection glory. He lived among men, ate with
them, fellowshiped with them 40 days, and then He, the God-man
mediator, in a real body, glorified, ascended to glory, they watched
him go, and he's seated. There's a man in glory with nail
prints in his hand. He's my Redeemer. He's my Savior. He's my forerunner who has entered
in and occupies for me. I'm seated in the heavenlies
in Christ Jesus right now. Wait a minute, preacher. I see
you right here. I know you do. I'm talking what
God sees. He sees me right now in His Son,
seated in the heavens. That's right. That gives this
sinner a measure of hope, assurance. Christ is exalted and crowned
with all glory and honor. That's why the theme of heaven
is worthy as a lamb that was slain to receive all honor, glory,
blessing, and power both now and for a little while, forevermore. Now, see how that talks about
the cross? You see verse 31, verse 32, now
is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified with Him. You see, God shall immediately
glorify Him. Everything about His glory, having
accomplished our salvation, it magnifies His person, His character,
all the attributes of God. Now look at verse 33. Now, little
children, little children, yet a little while, and I'm gonna
be with you." This is just a day before he actually lays down
his life for his sheep. Little children, yet a little
while, and I'm with you. And you'll seek me after a little
while. As I said to the Jews, whether I go, you cannot come. So now I say to you, let's pick
up verse 36, But thou, whether I go, you can't follow me now,
but thou shalt follow me afterwards." Afterwards. Little children.
Little children. The Lord addresses these full-grown,
burly, rough-cut fishermen as little children. You know why? They were babes in Christ. He's
hid these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them
unto babes. Also to show all of us how needy,
weak, and poor, and dependent we all are upon our shepherd. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall
not want. We're going to see in John 15,
turn over there, John 15 verse 5. John 15 verse 5, He that abideth
in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit. For
without me you can do nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. Little children. Little
children. Turn back to Luke 18. Excuse me. Luke 18. You know, Little children are
totally dependent upon someone else. Little children, they are
helpless babies, aren't they? I mean, if you took a little
child, I'm talking about newborn, a year or two old, and just cut
them loose, they wouldn't survive. They wouldn't know how to take
care of themselves. Little children, your little children, are totally,
aren't they? Jason, Lisa, your little ones,
they're totally dependent upon mama and daddy, aren't they?
I mean, they don't get up and go to work. They don't fix meals.
They're totally dependent upon mama and daddy. Such are the
little children of God. They're totally dependent upon
the Lord. Turn to Luke 18, Luke verse 15.
Luke 18, 15. And they brought unto him also
infants, that he would touch them. But when his disciples
saw it, they rebuked him, rebuked them rather. Don't bother the
Master with these little kids. I mean, come on. We've got more
important things to do. Look what the Lord said. The
Lord said, verse 6, He called them unto Him and said, Suffer
little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not, for
of such is the kingdom of God. Now look at verse 17 carefully.
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom
of God as a little child, shall the no wise enter in." Now, how
does a little child receive things? I mean, he's totally dependent
upon someone else to give him everything he needs. Clothing,
shelter, food, education, everything. He's totally dependent on another. We are totally dependent sinners
looking to the Lord Jesus Christ to provide our every need. The Lord is my shepherd. As I
said a moment ago, read Psalm 23 in the light of the Lord is
my shepherd. I shall not want I shall not
want for any good thing. And then read the rest of that
Psalm 23. I shall not want for rest, righteousness,
fellowship, mercy, salvation. All the days of my life I'll
dwell in the house of the Lord. My God shall supply all your
need according to His riches in glory through Christ Jesus. Now look back at the text. Little
children. I say unto you, you see, we are
totally dependent upon the Lord Jesus Christ. Now in verse, I
want to look at verse 34 and verse 35 for just a minute or
so. A new commandment, little children,
I give unto you that you love one another. That you love one
another. As I have loved you, See that
you love one another. By this shall all men know that
you are my disciples, if you love one another." Love one another. Here's the fruit of His atonement
that shed abroad in our heart by the Holy Spirit. Turn back
to the book of Romans and let's look at Romans chapter 5 for
just a moment. Here's the fruit of His atoning
work. The fruit of the Spirit is what?
Love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, meekness, temperance.
And this is what God does when He does that regenerating work
in our heart. He gives us a new spirit. He gives us life in Christ Jesus. You had the quickened who were
dead. If any man be in Christ, he's a new creation. Look what
it says here in Romans 5, look at verse 1. Therefore, being
justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ, by whom also we have access. This is the fruit of
His atonement. He was delivered for our offenses,
raised again for our justifications. You see that in Romans 4, 25.
Therefore, being justified. being justified, by faith we
have peace with God, by whom also we have access by faith
into this grace, wherein we stand and wherein we rejoice in the
hope of the glory of God, and not only so, but we glory in
tribulation, knowing that tribulation works patience, and patience,
experience, and experience gives us a real hope, experience of
grace. And hope maketh not ashamed,
Because the love of God. Now this is not natural affection.
This is that supernatural love of God that He gives to us when
He gives us a divine nature in the new birth, in regeneration.
And hope make it not a shame because the love of God is shed
abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given unto us. It's only by His sovereign mercy
and sovereign grace that we can love one another, forgive one
another as the Lord has, as the Lord loved us freely and willingly
forgives us. I read a week or so ago from
Ephesians chapter 4 where we are told to love one another
and to forgive one another even as God for Christ's sake has
forgiven us. This is more than that natural
affection that men have for one another. This is that super abounding
love that God sheds abroad in our heart. Let me just remind
you what we read a moment ago in 1 Corinthians 13. Necessary
is this love of God shed abroad in our heart. Though I speak
with the tongues of men and angels and have not love, I'm nothing
but a sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal. Though I have the gift
of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and
have all faith so that I can remove mountains and have not
love, I'm nothing. I'm nothing. Though I bestow
all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to
be burned, and have not love, have not Christ in me, the hope
of glory, it profit me nothing." Nothing. You see, by this shall
all men know that you're my disciples, that you love one another. This
is the badge and distinguishing mark upon every believer is that
we love Him And we love His people. Now turn back to 1 John again.
1 John. 1 John. Look at 1 John chapter
4 one more time. 1 John chapter 4. This love that
he's talking about here is not something that's natural to this
flesh. It's something beyond and above
that, much more, it's a spiritual Love that we have that's given
in the new birth. Look what it says here. And this
is the fruit of being born again. We're going to read in a minute.
1 John chapter 4. Look at verse 7. Beloved, let
us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone that
loveth is born of God. That's the new birth. That's
regeneration. He that loveth not knoweth not God. How? I don't need to explain
that, do I? He that loveth not, he's not been born from above. For God is love. You see, this
is His love in us. It's Christ in us. You see, it's
not the product of the flesh. The product of this flesh is
envy, greed, hate, jealousy. You see, it's the fruit of the
Spirit of love, joy, and peace. And this was manifested, the
love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten
Son into the world, that we might live, have salvation through
Him, here in His love. Here it is. Here it is. Not that
we loved Him, but that He loved us, and that He sent His Son
to be the sacrifice for our sin. Beloved, if God so loved us,
Maybe we ought to think about loving one another. No, this
is my commandment. We ought also to love one another. Now, stay right here in chapter
4. Look at verse 18. There is no fear in love. Perfect
love casteth out fear, because fear hath torment. He that feareth
is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4, 19. Now, we love Him
because He first loved us. If a man say, I love God and
hate his brother, if a man, now read that carefully, if a man
say, I love God but I hate my brother, he's a liar. For he that loveth not his brother
whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
And this commandment we have from him, that he who loveth
God loveth his brother also." John simply repeats what he heard
in that upper room that day. This commandment I give unto
you. John loved Peter. Wait a minute. Peter? Peter? You loved Peter. With all of his faults, with
all of his failures. Yeah, but Lord, do you really
know him? I mean, this is Peter. Yeah, I know him. You love him. This commandment we have from
him that he who loveth God loveth his brother also. Read on, chapter
five. Whosoever believeth that Jesus
is the Christ is born of God. As regeneration. Everyone that
loveth him that begat loveth him also that's begotten of him."
You see, I can't help but love you. You're my brother in the
Lord. We love one another. I know we
don't love like we ought to, like we should, but by His grace
we do. We do love one another. God,
help us to forgive and look over one another. By this shall all
men... This is the badge of discipleship. By this shall all men know that
you're my disciples, that you love one another. That you love
one another. Well, I'm going to say verse
36, verse 37, and verse 38, because it's really the introduction
into chapter 14, verse 1. where Peter says, I'll lay down
my life for you. And the Lord said, well, Peter,
not really. You will later. And he did. But
right now, you're going to need this vital lesson. I'm going
to take the wind out of your sail. I'm going to put you in
the dust and let you know that you're totally a little child
dependent upon Me. You're gonna deny me, but let
not your heart be troubled. You're not lost. You're still
mine. You're still mine.
