What does the Bible say about believing God?

The Bible emphasizes faith in God's promises, as seen in Paul's declaration, 'I believe God' in Acts 27:25.

In Acts 27:25, Paul confidently declares, 'I believe God that it shall be even as it was told unto me.' This encapsulates the core of faith in the sovereign grace of God, emphasizing the trustworthiness of God's Word and His promises. Just as Abraham believed God and was counted as righteous (Romans 4:3), believers are called to have a similar faith that stands firm in God's promises, regardless of circumstances. This faith is not built on feelings but on the solid foundation of God's unchanging nature and His covenant faithfulness.

Acts 27:25, Romans 4:3

How do we know God's promises are true?

God's promises are true because He has proven them throughout scripture, declaring that what He purposes will come to pass (Isaiah 46:10).

Isaiah 46:9-10 affirms God's sovereignty in declaring the end from the beginning and ensuring that His purposes will stand. Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly has shown His faithfulness to His Word, fulfilling the promises made to His people, as demonstrated in the prophetic writings concerning Christ. Jesus' birth, death, and resurrection fulfilled hundreds of years of prophecy, assuring believers that God's promises are always kept. Therefore, when God speaks, it shall be, as proven through the unfolding of redemptive history.

Isaiah 46:9-10

Why is believing God's Word important for Christians?

Believing God's Word is crucial for Christians as it forms the basis for their faith and assurance in His promises, providing comfort and hope in trials.

For Christians, faith in God's Word is paramount because it shapes their understanding of salvation and God's character. The Apostle Paul, in a dire situation, encouraged those around him by stating, 'I believe God.' This declaration not only reflects personal trust but also serves as a powerful testament to the hope that believers can possess even amidst adversity. Scripture teaches that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). It is through God’s Word that Christians find assurance, strength, and direction, especially during tumultuous times where natural hope seems lost. Thus, it is the unchanging nature of God's promises that allows believers to persevere and remain steadfast.

Romans 10:17; Acts 27:25

How does God provide comfort to believers?

God provides comfort to believers through His promises and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, enabling them to comfort others in their trials.

In 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, it is stated that God is the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our tribulations so that we may be able to comfort others. This assurance comes from the Holy Spirit residing in believers, which brings peace and comfort even amid trials. The experiences of God's faithfulness are not only for personal benefit but are also entrusted to believers so they can offer the same comfort to others facing hardships. Comfort from God empowers Christians to stand firm and share their testimony of His grace and mercy to a world in need, exemplifying the body of Christ's ministry on earth.

Okay, turning your Bible again
to the book of Acts. Acts of the Apostles, the book
of Acts. We find the Apostle Paul in great
danger and peril, being tossed to and fro about on this ship,
and the ship taking in water, the ship coming apart, the ship
going down, He says, all hope of natural hope of being saved
from the rage of the sea and the storm. You can imagine this,
out there in the middle of the ocean, tossed with this hurricane
and this wind, knowing that if the ship goes down, we're going
to perish. These soldiers, hardened sailors,
hardened soldiers, the centurion, Paul, and these others, they
were in great danger, great peril. But the apostle stands forth
in verse 22, and he says this, words of comfort, words of encouragement,
I exhort you to be of good cheer, Acts 27, 22. For there shall
be no loss of any man's life among you, we're going to lose
the ship, but you're all going to be okay. Why do you say that,
Paul? Well, he had God's Word, God's
promise, there stood by me this night, God's messenger, God's
angel. Those who go forth doing God's
business, those who minister to them who are the heirs of
salvation. Whose I am, whom I serve, I serve
God's purpose, God's cause, and the message from God was, Paul,
fear not. Do not fear. Do not fear, Paul,
for you must be brought before Caesar, and, lo, God hath given
all them that sail with you. Wherefore, he says to these sailors
and to the centurion, Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer. Be of good cheer. I believe God. That's the title of my message
this morning. I believe God that it shall be. It shall be. Just as God said it would be,
it must be. I believe God. I believe God. He describes for
us the source and cause of His confidence, of His comfort in
three words. In three words, he sums it up. I believe God. I believe God. Paul, like Abraham,
believed God and was persuaded that all that God promised, he
was able to bring to pass. And he comforts these men who
needed a word of encouragement and comfort. He comforted these
men with the same comfort wherewith he was comforted himself. Now
let me show you that in Scripture. Turn to 2 Corinthians chapter
1. 2 Corinthians chapter 1. Look at verse 3 and 4. 2 Corinthians
chapter 1. And that's what we do when we
run into other believers who are going through heartache and
trial and trouble. We comfort one another with the
same comfort wherewith we are comforted. God's Word, God's
truth. Blessed be the God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. who
comforted us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort
them which are in any trouble by the comfort wherewith we ourselves
are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ
abound in us, so our consolation also abounded by the Lord Jesus
Christ." In this story, God promised Paul that all 276 of these on
this ship All souls aboard this ship would
be saved from the storm. He said, not a hair from your
head is going to perish. And then he says in the last
verse of chapter 27, and so it came to pass. God said, and so
it came to pass. God promised, and so it came
to pass. I believe God. He's true to His
Word. He's true to His covenant. And
so it came to pass that they escaped all. Safe to the land. Now, here's my first point. Paul
was strong and courageous because he, not because he was strong,
he was bold and courageous and strong because he believed God's
Word, God's promise. True faith makes men strong and
bold. Not in head, but in heart. Not
in talk only, but also in actions and in deeds. True faith makes
believers strong looking to Christ. Paul's faith was based upon not
his feelings. He didn't say, well now, you
know, I just feel like it's going to be okay. He didn't base his
confidence and courage upon his feelings. No, he said, I believe
God. Not upon feeling, not upon his
emotion, but rather upon the word and the promise of God.
It shall be even as God said it would be. And he believed
God. He believed God. I remember that
song written by Martin Luther years and years ago. It goes
something like this. Feelings come and feelings go.
And feelings are deceiving. My warrant is the Word of God.
Nothing else is worth believing. Though all my heart should feel
condemned for want of some sweet token, I know one greater than
my heart whose word cannot be broken. So I'll trust God's unchanging
Word till soul and body sever. The words of man will pass away.
God's Word abides forever." I believe God. Paul believed the very Word
and promise of God. His confidence and courage came
from his conviction that what God promised, he was able to
do. He said, I know whom I have believed,
and I'm persuaded he's able to keep all that which I've committed
unto him against that day. He is able. God is able. He didn't
say it may be. I hope it will be. Or God wants
it to be. No, he said it shall be. I believe God. What God has written
in His Word, Now you think of all the promises God has written
in His Word. We read it last week, I think,
or the week before. Not one word of His promise shall
fail. God is true to all of His Word.
All shall come to pass. Now mark this scripture in your
Bible. Turn to Isaiah. Isaiah. Stay right here in the
book of Isaiah for just a moment. Turn to Isaiah 46. All that God
has written in His Word. If not, maybe it will come to
pass. Or perhaps it will come to pass. Or if I do certain things,
it will come to pass. Know what God has written, it
shall come to pass. His purpose will be done. Isaiah
46, mark this in your Bible, verse 9. Remember the former
things of old. I am God, there is none else.
Isaiah 46, 9. I am God, there is none like
me, declaring the end from the beginning. from ancient times
to things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand. My purpose shall stand. I'll
do all my pleasure. Calling a ravenous bird from
the east, the man that would execute my counsel from a far
country, I have spoken it. I'll bring it to pass. I've purposed
it. Well, maybe it'll happen. No,
what does it say? I will also do it. I will perform all my purpose,
all my promise. Now stay in the book of Isaiah.
Concerning the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, God promised
to send the Messiah. Turn to Isaiah chapter 7. Will it come to pass? God has
spoken. He's given His Word. He's given
His promise that the Messiah shall come. Isaiah 7. Therefore the Lord himself shall
give you a son, and behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel. Well, there's God's promise.
Look at Isaiah 9, 6. For unto us a child is born.
Unto us a child is born, a son is given. The government shall
be upon his shoulders. His name shall be called Wonderful
Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince
of Peace. And he says, of the increase
of his government and peace, there shall be no end. Upon the
throne of David, upon his kingdom to order it, to establish it
with judgment and justice from henceforth even forevermore.
The zeal, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will, will perform this. He will do it. He will do it. Did he? Well, let's find out.
Turn over here to Matthew chapter 1. The messenger from heaven
came to Joseph and Mary when she was with child, and appeared
to Joseph and said, Don't be afraid to take unto her your
wife. That which is conceived in her
is not of you, it's of God the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring
forth a son." Matthew 1.21. God said it, didn't He? A burden
shall be with child. Will He do it? Here's His promise
fulfilled. And she shall bring forth a son.
And thou shalt call his name Jesus, Saviour, for he shall
save his people from their sin. Now all this was done that it
might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet
Isaiah. Behold, a virgin shall be with
child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his
name Emmanuel, being interpreted which means God with us, God
manifest in the flesh. Turn back to Isaiah 53. God has
spoken that this One that would come, the God-man mediator, that
He would come as a charity of the covenant, as a sacrifice
of the covenant, as a mediator of the covenant, this One who
would stand in our room and in our stead and die for our sins,
according to the Scripture, Isaiah 53. He's spoken it. He's promised
it. Will it happen? Verse 4, "...surely
He hath borne our griefs, carried our sorrows, We did esteem him
stricken, spitting of God, and afflicted. He was wounded for
our transgression. He was bruised for our iniquity.
The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his strife
we are healed." There's his promise. 700 years before the Lord came. Well, what happened? Turn to
Acts chapter 2. Acts chapter 2. Just as God said
it would come to pass, it came to pass. My friend, I believe
God. How about you? Acts chapter 2,
the men of Israel, verse 22. Hear these words, Jesus of Nazareth,
a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders, a sign
which God did by him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also
know, him being delivered by the determinant counsel for knowledge
of God. He was taken by wicked hands
and crucified and slain, whom God raised up, having loosed
the pains of death, because it was not possible that he should
be holding of it. Turn to Acts chapter 4. You see,
God has spoken that He would die as the sinner's substitute,
as the surety, as the sacrifice, to hold the Lamb of God that
takes away our sin. Did it come to pass? Absolutely. Acts chapter 4, verse 26, the kings of the earth
stood up. And the rulers were gathered
together against the Lord and against his Christ, for of the
truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed,
both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people
of Israel were gathered together, for to do whatsoever thy hand
and thy counsel determined afore to be done." You see, God has
spoken His word. He has spoken His promise. And
it came to pass. Here's another one, turned back
to Isaiah 53.10. Isaiah 53.10. The accomplishment of our salvation,
God had decreed it, declared it before it came to pass in
time. Isaiah 53, 10, Yet it pleased
the Lord to bruise him. He had put him to grief, when
thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin. He shall see his seed,
he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall
prosper in his hand. He shall see the travail of his
soul and shall be satisfied. By his knowledge shall my righteous
servant justify many, For he shall bear their iniquities."
Did it come to pass? Turn over here to 2 Corinthians.
2 Corinthians chapter 5. 2 Corinthians chapter 5. The Lord Jesus Christ came and
died for our sin according to the Scripture. 2 Corinthians
5. Look what it says here, verse 21. 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21. For God had made Him to be sin
for us." God made Him, and you can read it this way, leave the
two words, to be, out, because they've been added. Well, God
made Him sin for us. It pleased God to bruise Him
in our room and in our stead. The one who knew no sin, had
no sin, did no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of
God in Him. Our sin was laid on Him. The
just dying for the unjust that He might bring us unto God, that
we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. He spoke in it. Did it come to pass? absolutely
delivered for our offenses and raised again for our justification. We see the accomplishment of
our salvation. God said it would happen just
this way, by the Lamb of God designated, dying in the room
in the stead of His covenant people, that special sacrifice
for the special people, covenant people. And my friend, God is
true to His Word. I believe God that it shall be
just as He told it. It shall be. It shall be. The
saving of His people, as in this story in Acts chapter 27, as
in this story, God said no one would be lost. All will be safe. Stay in the boat. Don't sneak
out. Stay in the boat. Don't use that
lifeboat. Don't go the way you think you
need to go. Stay in the boat. All that stay
in the boat will be safe. Even so, all those in the Lord
Jesus Christ, for whom He died, for whom He performed righteousness,
honoring God's law and justice, for all whom He died, none can
perish. God has said it, and it shall
be so. Turn to John chapter 6. This
is a record of Scripture. I believe just as God said it
would be, just as He's told it. I believe God. John 6 verse 37. All that the Father giveth me
shall come to me, and him that cometh to me I will in no wise,
no way cast out. For I have come down from heaven,
not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me. And
this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which
he hath given me I should lose nothing, raise it up again at
the last day. This is the will of him that
sent me, that everyone would see it to some, and believe it
on him. may have everlasting life, and
I will raise Him up at the last day. No one of God's sheep can
perish. All in Christ shall be saved
eternally in Him." Paul believed God. He believed God's Word,
believed God's promise. Secondly, Paul's faith gave him
hope when all hope was gone. Look back at the text again.
Verse 20. And when neither sun nor stars
in many days appeared, it was so black they couldn't tell day
from night, hardly. This violent storm and all hope
that we should be saved was gone. Against hope. He had hope. He believed God. Paul's faith
gave him hope when all hope was gone. When there's nothing else
to believe, he believed God. All visible signs of their being
rescued or their being safe in the boat was gone. When all visible
signs and evidence was gone, yet he believed God. He believed God. When there's
nothing else, he believed God. They had done all they could
to save the ship, undergirding the ship, dropping the sail,
lightening the load, all natural hope was gone, yet Paul said,
I believe God. I believe Him. The faith of God's
elect is that faith that does not diminish in the storm. Trust
Him at all times, ye people. Pour out your heart before Him.
God is a refuge for us. True faith, trust Him at all
times. When providence is smooth and
when providence is rough, when He sends us trials and heartache
and burdens to bear, we believe God. Job said this, and Job had
been through a lot. You remember he lost all of his
livestock, his servants, his children, his wife said, well
Job, why don't you just curse God and die? Remember what he
said? Though He slay me, yet I'll trust Him. You see, that's
saving faith. That's true faith in the storm,
in the calm. True faith doesn't change because
this object doesn't change. We're looking to Christ. Turn
to Psalm 46. Psalm 46, Luke verse 1. Psalm
46, verse 1, God is our refuge and strength, the very present
help in trouble, in trouble, therefore will not we fear. Though
the earth be removed, though the mountains be carried in the
midst of the sea, though the waters thereof roar and be troubled.
We often go through many stormy trials in this life, don't we?
Though the mountains shake thereof with swelling, there is a river,
the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy
place of the tabernacle of the multi. God is in the midst of
her. She shall not be moved. God shall help her and that right
soon. God is our refuge and our strength. He said, I'll never leave you.
I'll never forsake you. I believe God against all hope. Natural hope, yet true saving
faith looks to the Lord Jesus Christ for all things in salvation,
in righteousness. Thirdly, because Paul believed
God, he was not ashamed to boldly confess his faith before these
ungodly, these prisoners, these sailors, the centurion, the master
of the ship. Paul wasn't Ashamed or coward,
he stood forth in the midst of all this trouble, in the face,
toe-to-toe with these ungodly, reprobate men, and he said, Sirs,
I believe God. I hope he wasn't afraid, ashamed
to confess his faith before men. Not at all. Genuine, true faith
in God, his gospel speaks out. True faith is not silent. True
faith speaks forth the words of truth. Has to. Let me show
you scripture here. Find 2 Corinthians 4. 2 Corinthians
4. There is no silent witness program
here. God's servants speak forth boldly
the word of truth. They're not ashamed of the gospel
of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4. Look at verse 11. For we which live are always
delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus
might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. So then death work
within us but life in you having the same spirit of faith This
is recorded from David Psalm 116 according to according as
it is written. I believe therefore have I spoken
I Believe therefore have I what kept silent? I believe therefore
have I spoken We also believe and therefore we do what we speak. We speak the word of truth. We
don't hold back There's no point to try to sneak up on folks Turn
to Romans chapter 1. There's no point to try to sneak
up on folks. Well, you know, we believe in
the sovereignty of God, and God has a people, and God elected
a people, and Christ died for those people, and salvations
all of grace, but you know, Man, those things, where are you going
to keep it in the study and not tell anybody about it? No, my
friend, you don't sneak up on people. You don't try to introduce
people to the gospel in a slow manner. We boldly declare that
God is God, that He chose the people, unconditionally elected
them, that Christ particularly died for them, and He will save
them by His sovereign grace. Romans 1. Paul said in verse
15, So as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to
you that are at Rome, to all that will hear. For I am not
ashamed of the gospel of Christ, the power of God and of salvation
to everyone that believes, to the Jew and also to the Greek.
Therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to
faith, as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Our Lord said this in Matthew
10, He said, What I tell you in secret, that declare on the
housetop. Stand up on the housetop in public
and declare the Word. That's what we do. We have witnessed
this happening all through the book of Acts, haven't we? Turn back over here to Acts chapter
4. When Paul stood before countless
audiences of various sundry different kinds of people, he boldly declared
and confessed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Did he not? when the
apostles John and Peter were arrested for healing a man, in
the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Acts chapter 4, verse 8, then
Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said to them, you rulers of the
people and elders of Israel, if we this day be examined of
the good deed done to this impotent man, by what means he's made
whole, what if he would have just said this? What if he just
said, in the name of the God of Abraham? Now that would have been right. But
look what he says here. He said, "...be it known unto
you all, and to all the people..." You see, the point of contention
with them, with those Pharisees, was the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ. And he brings this name to the
forefront. "...that by the name of Jesus
Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from
the dead, even by Him does this man stand here before you complete."
This is the stone which was set at Nod of you builders, which
has become the head, the Lord of all men. Neither is there
salvation in any other. There is no other name under
heaven given among men whereby we must be saved." You see, he
boldly stood forth. Peter and John and the apostles
turned to Acts chapter 13. And others confessing this message,
just as Paul did on that ship. Just as we try to do each time
we preach the gospel, to boldly, plainly declare the truth of
salvation through Christ Jesus and in Him. In Acts 13, this
is the record of Paul's first message. Verse 46, when those
in the city, those Jews spoke against Paul, being filled with
envy, and they spoke against Paul, contradicting and blaspheming
Paul, calling him evil. And the things he spoke, evil.
Verse 46 in Paul, and Barnabas waxed bold. They didn't compromise. They didn't shut down. You know,
Barnabas, maybe we ought not say anything about Christ anymore.
No, they got bold. They waxed bold. It is necessary
that the Word of God should have first been spoken to you, but
saying that you put it from yourself, you judge yourself unworthy,
no need of a Savior. Lo, we turn to the Gentiles,
and they will hear it. And they will believe as many
as were ordained to eternal life. We've seen this all through the
book of Acts. I think of that story of that
wild Gadarene in Mark chapter 5. And the Lord crossed his path
and healed him and clothed him and put him in his right mind.
And that man wanted to follow the Lord Jesus. You remember
what he told him? He said, you go home to your family, to your
friends, and you tell them how great things the Lord had done
for you. You be a witness of what God has wrought in you.
And he departed and he went home and he declared, what great things
God had done for me. He wasn't silent, not at all.
If you truly believe the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, let's
tell out the truth of God. You see, the truth, the truth,
the gospel is the power of God. Take out the truth, and you don't
have any gospel. You don't have any power at all.
True believers in the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, they
speak the truth about God. Who is God? He is sovereign. He is the absolute sovereign.
He is holy. He is unchanging. I am the Lord,
I change not. We speak the truth about God,
who He is. We speak the truth about us,
who we are. Sinful. Guilty, fallen, depraved,
without God, without hope, without life, unless He does something
for us. Salvation of the Lord. We tell
the truth about the Lord Jesus Christ, who He is, God Almighty,
and God manifest in the flesh, both God and man in one blessed
person. He is the God-man mediator. We tell the truth about His person,
God manifest in the flesh. We tell the truth about His work.
He made atonement for His covenant people. He justified them by
His blood. And He did not fail to accomplish
their salvation. We tell the truth about salvation. Salvation is not part we do and
part God does. Salvation is not God done all
He can do, now the rest is up to you. Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is all of God's grace.
Elections of grace. callings of grace, our glorification
is all of God's grace, from Alpha to Omega, from beginning to the
ending, salvation is all of God's grace. It's God who saved us
and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but
according to God's own purpose and grace, which is given us
in Christ before the foundation of the world. Not only in places,
now listen, We are witnesses unto God's gospel and God in
the Lord Jesus Christ. God saving sinners in Christ
Jesus for His sake, for His blood. Not only in places where it's
believed. Now sometimes it's easier to speak about these things
in places where it's believed. But also in places where it's
denied. Speak forth the word of truth. If I had an invitation to go
to some Arminian church, and I mean by that those who preach
salvation by free will works, if I had an opportunity to do
that, would I go? Would I change my message? Huh? Well, y'all
just kind of back down just a little bit? Oh, no. Oh, no. No, I'll make it more bold. I'll
make it stronger if I can. Because, my friend, that's the
power of God. You compromise and take out the essence of the
gospel and you have no message. You have no gospel. Not at all. Now here's my second point. And
I've got a few minutes. In regards to all the exceeding
great and precious promises in the Word, in Christ Jesus, all
the promises of God are in Him, in Christ, they're yes and they're
amen. Look back to the text again,
Acts 27. Let me see if I can help us here.
Acts 27, verse 25, Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer, I believe
God, that it shall be even, even as it was told to me. I believe
God. In regards to all the exceeding
great and precious promises in the Word, in Christ Jesus, friend,
be of good cheer. I believe God, it shall be just
as He said it will be. All the promises of God. Now
you think, if you can fit the character of the one described
in the promise, believe God and apply it to yourself. If you
fit the character of the one to whom the promises are made,
believe God and rest in what He has said. Now, His promise
to save sinners. Turn with me, Matthew 9. His
promise to save sinners. He promised so. Can you fit the
character of the promise? He's promised to save sinners.
Matthew 9, when He was sitting down with sinners, publicans,
He sat down. And when the Pharisees saw it,
verse 11, Matthew 9, they said unto the disciples, why did your
Master eat with publicans and sinners? He said unto them, but
Jesus said, Jesus heard When he heard what they said, they
that behold need not a physician, but those who are sick. Go ye
and learn what this means. I will have mercy, not sacrifice. I am not come to call the righteous
sinners to repentance." Do you meet the character of that promise?
Are you a sinner? Salvation is for sinners, my
friend. He came to seek and to save that which is lost. Turn
to Matthew 11. Be of good cheer if you believe
God. Are you in need? Well, His promise
is to the needy. His promise is in Matthew 11,
verse 28, coming to me, all ye that labor and heavy laden, you
have a burden? Are you heavy laden with sin?
He said, come unto me and I'll give you rest. Take my yoke upon
you and lower to me, for I am meek and lowly in heart. And
you shall find rest for your soul, for my yoke is easy, my
burden is light. This is a faithful saying, turn
to Romans chapter 4. This is a faithful saying and
worthy of all acceptation that the Lord Jesus Christ came to
save sinners. That's His promise. Do you meet
the character of that promise? Are you a sinner? Look what it says here in Romans
4. He says here that He justifieth the ungodly. Are you ungodly?
Romans 4, verse 3, for what sayeth the Scripture? Abraham believed
God. It was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him
that worketh is a reward, not reckoning of grace, but a debt. But to him that worketh not,
but believeth the ungodly, that believeth on him that justifieth
the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Are you ungodly? Look across the page of Romans
5. Salvation for the ungodly, salvation for sinners, salvation
for the guilty, for the lost. Romans 5 verse 6, For when we
were yet without strength in due time, Christ died for the
ungodly. Who did He die for? Do you fit
that character? Are you ungodly? Are you a sinner? Be of good cheer! I believe God,
it shall be just as He told me. Secondly, His promise to those
saved by grace who are yet sinners. Look at His promise here. Turn
to 1 John. Those who are saved by God's
grace, who mourn over their sin. Oh, wretched man that I am. 1
John. 1 John chapter 1. Oh, wretched man that I am. Who
shall deliver me from this body of death? I thank God through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Those who are sinners saved by
grace and yet have the consciousness of their own inability and sin
in their heart. Look what it says here in 1 John
1, 7. Be in good cheer. I believe God. Look what he said. 1 John 1,
7. If we walk in the light, He is in the light, we have fellowship
one with another in the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses
us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin,
we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess
our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we've not sinned, we
make Him a liar, and the Word's not in us. Look at verse 1 and
chapter 2. My little children, these things
I write unto you that you sin not. But when you do sin, we have an advocate with
the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and He is our propitiation. For our sins and for sins of
all of God's people wherever they are in this whole world,
there's just one sacrifice for sin. There's one propitiation
for sin. One God and one mediator, the
man Christ Jesus. Thirdly, his promise to his people
who are afflicted by trials and heartache. All things work together
for good to them who love God, to them who are the called according
to His purpose. He said, I'll never leave you,
I'll never forsake you. They work for our good. My friend,
I believe God that it shall be just as He said it would be. They're for our good. No wonder
trials are called precious, precious. Whom the Lord loveth, He chastens
and scourges every son whom He receiveth. Fourthly, His promise
to His people in need. Turn to Philippians chapter 4.
You in need? You fit the character of the
promise? I'm in need. Philippians chapter
4. Look what it says here. Philippians 4.19. His promise
to His people in need. David said, I am poor and needy,
yet the Lord thinketh upon me. Philippians 4.19. But my God
shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory. by Christ
Jesus. Do you fit the character of the
promise? Are you in need? His promise
to His people in need. Turn to Hebrews chapter 4 and
look at this. Hebrews chapter 4. Are you in
need? Do you fit the character of the promise? I believe God. It shall be just as He told,
just as He said. Hebrews 4, look at verse 16.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that
we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Are you in need? He's able to
meet all our need according to His riches in glory through Christ
Jesus. You remember the story in Genesis
22? Abraham took Isaac up on a mountain. Isaac said, well,
we have the Knife in the fire and we're going to make an altar,
but where is the lamb? God will provide himself a lamb. He is Jehovah Jireh. The Lord
will provide. Lastly, his promise to his church. He said, I'll build my church
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Wherefore,
sirs, friends, be of good cheer. Believe God. Will God's church
ever go out of business here on this earth? Not until He comes
and takes us home to glory and ends this thing as we know it. We are more than conquerors through
Him that loved us. Thanks be unto God who has given
us a victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I believe God that
it shall be even as He told it, it would be. Do you meet the
character of those promises? Are you a sinner? Are you in
need? Are you under trial, under heartache? Look to Him. His word is faithful
and true in all things.
