Chapter 17, verse 1 begins in
this fashion. These words speak Jesus. It's
not talking about the words that He is about to speak. It's talking
about the words that He has been speaking for the past four chapters
to His disciples. John 13, 14, 15, and 16. He talked to his disciples about
three things, primarily. A multitude of things, but primarily. He talked to them about his death.
They didn't understand. They couldn't comprehend how
he could be their king and yet die, how he could be their savior
and yet suffer and die. And he talked to them about his
death, and he talked to them about his return to the Father. He said, I came from the Father.
Go back to the Father. his ascension. And then he talked
to them about their ministry here on the earth and what they
would suffer and what they could expect. And briefly, in summarizing
those four chapters, in chapter 13, he exhorted them in their
ministry to be humble, humble servants. He washed their feet. If I, your Lord and Master, have
washed your feet, You ought to be willing to serve in the most
meager fashion in the lowest place to serve one another and
to serve the kingdom of God. Then he commanded them to love
one another in that chapter. He commanded them to love one
another, he said, as I love you. He said, by this shall all men
recognize you are my disciples if you love one another. In chapter
14, they were so depressed and so troubled in spirit, and he
comforted them in their sorrow over his departure. And he assured
them that he was going to prepare a place for them. And in going
and preparing a place for them, he would certainly come back
and receive them unto himself. Where he was, they would be always
and also. In John 15, he spoke to them
about his oneness with them. He said, I and my father are
one. And he said, you and I are one. You and I are one as the
vine and the branches are one. He said, I'm the vine, you're
the branches, and they're one. And in John 16, that chapter
just preceding this chapter here, he talked to them about the coming
of the Holy Spirit. He said, I'll leave you, but
you'll not be alone. He said, it's necessary for me
to go away. If I go not away, the Spirit
will not come. And the Spirit will come, God
will send you another comforter, the Holy Spirit, and He'll convince
the world of sin. You can't do it, but He can,
of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. And he'll not only
convince the world of sin, but he'll glorify me. And then he'll
be your comforter. And then he'll take the things
of mine and show them to you. He'll teach you all things that
I've said unto you. And then he sums up that chapter
16 with verse 33. Look, verse 33. And these things
have I spoken unto you. all of these things, he's been
with them for several days, and he's been speaking to them. Number
one, that in me you might have peace. That's where your peace
is, in me. You'll have peace. And that's
why I've said all these things, that you might in me have peace.
Because, secondly, in the world you're going to have trouble.
Trouble, tribulation, and sorrow in this world. But thirdly, listen,
but be of good cheer. Rejoice, because I have overcome
the world." The hymn writer said, let the world despise and leave
us. They left our Savior too. For
earthly toys and men would deceive us, but Christ Our Lord is ever
true. Lord, I'm with you always, even
to the end of the world. And then he lifted up his eyes
to heaven. And he said, Father, the hour
has come. The eternal Son speaks to the
eternal Father about the eternal covenant. The hour has come. The hour for which I came into
the world, it's here. So many times he said, my hour
has not yet come. He started off his ministry with
that statement. Woman, what have I to do with
thee? My hour has not yet come. When that group of people would
throw him off the cliff in Nazareth, he walked right through their
midst because his hour was not yet come. But it has. The hour
has come. The Eternal Son speaks to the
Eternal Father in regard to the plan and purpose of God from
all eternity, that covenant of mercy. The great high priest
comes before the throne, right here in this chapter, on behalf
of the people whom he represents, to claim for them, to lay claim
for them all that he, by his awesome sacrifice, purchased
on the cross of Calvary. That's what Paul is talking about
when he says in Romans 8, he that spared not his own son,
but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him freely
give us all things that he purchased? Our Lord, Father, the hour has
Now glorify thy son, that thy son may also glorify thee. And then he talks to the father
in verse 2 about who he is, who this son is. He says, Thou hast
given me power. That word is authority. That
word is dominion. Thou hast given to me dominion
and power over all flesh. Not just my elect, not just my
church, not just Zion, but over all flesh. As Brother Barney
used to say, everything that writhes and wiggles, he controls. Thou hast given me power over
all flesh. He's a sovereign Lord. He's the
captain of our salvation. Thou hast given me this authority
that I may give eternal life. that I may give it, eternal life,
the life of God, divine life, to as many as thou hast given
me." And in this prayer, John 17, he uses that one statement,
to as many as thou hast given me, six times. Almost every time
he refers to those for whom he prays, he identifies them as
those thou hast given me. So he, Father, you've given me
authority. put in my hands all things pertaining
to thy kingdom to give eternal life. And this is life eternal.
This is what it is. Life eternal is not just how
long it lasts. Life eternal is the nature of
this life. It's divine life. It's life eternal. And here it is that they might
know thee, know God. The only true God. has a God. They said to David, our God is
here, there, and yonder. Where's your God, David? He said,
my God's in the heaven. Whatsoever he please, that my
God does. In heaven, earth, and the seas,
and all deep places. My God is a sovereign God, and
he gives eternal life to as many as he pleases. He shows mercy
on whom he will, and is gracious to whom he will. And Father,
that's who I am. That's who I am. And then, secondly,
he prays about what he's done. Look at verse 4. I've glorified
thee on this earth. No man's ever glorified you on
this earth in human flesh, but I have. Made of a woman, made
under the law, came down to this earth, walked this earth in flesh,
and Father, I've glorified you on this earth. That's that righteousness
that Brother Jim was thanking God for a while ago, that perfect,
pure, holy, spotless, eternal righteousness he purchased for
us. I glorified you on this earth. And I have this day finished
the work he gave me to do. And I'll tell you what that work
is. That angel said to Joseph, now Mary is expecting a baby. But don't you be afraid to take
her to be your wife, because that holy thing conceived in
her is the Son of God. And Joseph, you call his name
Jesus, because he'll save his people from their sins. He'll
save his people from their sins. I finished that work. That's
what he came to do. Jesus Christ, Paul said, this
is a faithful saying. He's coming to the world. to
save sinners, for whom I'm the chief. That's who I am. All authority, sovereign Lord,
captain of their salvation. Here's what I've done. I've glorified
you on this earth. And I have completely, successfully,
effectually finished everything you gave me to do. And here's
what he expects. Verse 5, Now, and now, O Father, glorify me. with the glory which I had with
thee before this world was." That's right. We preach that a lot, who he
is and what he did and where he is now. And he calls that
to the attention of the Father. That's who I am. That's what
I've done. And this is what I expect. That's the reason that scripture
says, he that spared not his own son, but delivered him up
for us all. How shall he not? Give unto us
freely everything he bought. Well, he will. You don't have
to waste any sleep over that. Our Lord will claim the reward
that's his and all that belongs. Now, the rest of this chapter,
the rest of this prayer, all the rest of this chapter, has
to do with us, those whom the Father gave him, those for whom
he suffered, those for whom he died, those for whom he intercedes. And he talks about us. Now let's
read it. Verse 6, he said, I've manifested
your name unto the men which you gave me out of the world.
I've manifested your name. Thine they were and you gave
them to me, and they've kept your word. What's in a name?
I've manifested your name. What's in a name? Much. The character of the person of
whom you're speaking is in the name. The nature of that person,
what you expect from him, the purpose and will and spirit and
attitude of that person. What's in a name? And I've manifested
your name. to these people that you've given
me." Let's turn to Exodus chapter 34 and read about the name of
God, the name of our God. Exodus chapter 34, the name of
our God from his own lips in Exodus 34. The name of God from
his own lips in Exodus 34 verse 5. Got it? And the Lord descended
in the cloud and stood with him there. and proclaim the name
of the Lord. And the Lord passed by before
him, before Moses, and proclaimed the Lord, the Lord God, merciful
and gracious, that's our Lord, long-suffering, abundant in goodness
and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity,
transgression and sin, and yet will by no means clear the guilty,
vesting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the children's
children, unto the third and fourth generation. Moses heard
this, he made haste and bowed his head towards the earth and
worshiped God. That's the name of the Lord. John said in 1 John 5, the Son
of God has come and given us an understanding that we may
know Him, the true God. This is the true God, and this
is eternal life, that we might know Him and Jesus Christ whom
He sent. This is eternal life. And that's
what He's saying here, these you've given me, I've manifested
your name to them. You know, before the Lord Jesus
came into the world, back here before Bethlehem, before our
Lord was born of Mary, the Old Testament, covers about 4,000
years of human history. And the Father revealed himself
during those 4,000 years. He spake to our fathers by the
prophets, and he revealed himself, and he revealed himself in the
name Jehovah, God my Savior, to his people. And he called
himself Jehovah Jireh, God my Savior will provide. And in Christ,
I say, God my Savior will provide. provide himself a lamb, a redeemer. He called himself to those Old
Testament people, Jehovah-Raper. I'm the Lord that healeth thee.
Well, I see in Christ that he healeth all our diseases. Our
sicknesses and diseases were laid on him. He's manifested
the name of the Lord. He called himself to them Jehovah-Neesa,
God my Savior and my banner, my king, my ensign. who reigns
over me. That's who Christ is. He's a
Savior, but he's a King. He's a Lamb, but he's a Lion
of Judah. He's a meek and lowly Savior, but he's also the reigning
Judge. He revealed himself to those
people back there as Jehovah Shalom. The Lord, my God, is
my peace. Christ purchased peace for us
through the blood of his cross. He revealed himself back there,
Jehovah Sidkenu, the Lord, God, my Savior, is my righteousness. Well, Christ is my righteousness.
He came down here by the sin of Adam. Many were made sinners
by the obedience of Christ. We were made righteous. He's
a righteous God. He revealed himself back yonder
as Jehovah Shema, the last chapter of Ezekiel, which means The Lord
is there. The Lord is there. That's Christ. Lo, I'm with you always, omnipresent. The Lord is there. Whither shall
I flee from thy presence? If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the othermost parts of the sea, thou'rt there. If
I descend into the deeps and the hills, thou'rt there. No
place that he's not, he's the Lord who's present. The Lord's
there. The Lord is there. I'm not in
a house. Are you going to build me a house? For the heaven of heavens cannot
contain me. Where's the house you'll build
for me? Then he called himself Jehovah-Raya, the Lord, God,
my Savior, and my Shepherd. And that's Christ. He called
himself the Chief Shepherd. The good shepherd, the great
shepherd. I know my sheep and have known
of mine. And the Lord being my shepherd,
I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green
pastures. He leadeth me beside still waters. He stores my soul. In all of this, the Father is
revealed in Christ. In verse 7 he says, and listen,
I manifested your name, now verse 7, They have known. Now they know. Didn't used to,
but now they know. Now they know. Let me paraphrase. Now they know and understand
that all that you've given me, which is all things, are from
you, belong to you, and you've given them to me. That's what
he said. Now they know. The world saw him. They said,
we know him. He's the carpenter. We know him,
he's the healer. We know him, he's the Nazarite. He said, Peter, whom you say
I am, you're the Christ, the Son of the living God. Now they
know. Now they know that all things
whatsoever you hath given me, they are of thee. All things
from you are mine and dwell in me, and all things that dwell
in me are theirs. Then he says in verse 8, I've
given unto them the words which thou gavest me. I've given them
your word. Let's go back to Deuteronomy
18 just a moment. Deuteronomy chapter 18. I've
given them your word. You notice he didn't just say
I preached it, but I gave it to these men. I've given them
thy words which thou gavest me. Deuteronomy 18. Verse 18, Moses
is speaking. The Lord is speaking through
Moses. I will raise them up a pocket
from among their brethren like unto thee, Moses, and I'll put
my words in his mouth. This is talking about the Lord
Jesus Christ. And he'll speak unto them all
that I shall command him, and it'll come to pass. that whosoever
will not hearken unto my words, which he shall speak in my name,
I require of him. But the Lord Jesus said, Father,
these whom you've given me, I've given them your word. Turn to
John 12 and listen to him, how he says it here in John 12. John
12 verse 49. Now he preached the word to the
world, but they didn't believe him. They didn't believe him.
But to his sheep, he gave them his word. He gave it to them. In verse 49, John 12, I've not
spoken of myself. The Father which sent me, he
gave me a commandment of what I should say and what I should
speak. And I know his commandment is
life everlasting. Whatsoever I speak, therefore,
even as the Father said unto me, so I speak. His word comes to us. who believe
in power, not in word only. That's what Paul said about the
Thessalonica church, the church at Thessalonica. He said, I know
you're God's elect. I know you're God's elect because
our gospel didn't come to you in word only, in doctrine only. It came to you in power. It came
to you in much assurance. It came to you in the Holy Ghost.
And that's what he's saying here. unto them the words you gave
me. I'll raise up a prophet, and
I'll give him my words, and he'll give them to the people. And you know how you know whether
or not he gave you the word? Listen to what he says. Verse
8, I have given unto them the words you gave me, and they received
them. They just lapped them up like
a little cat laps up milk when you put it down on the floor.
And you keep on lapping until it gets the last drop to, and
then mew for more. But not only did they receive
them, but they know who I am. They know surely I came from
thee. There's nobody to whom he gave
his word that doubts the deity of Christ. These are fools. There's
nobody to whom he's given his word that doubt his virgin birth,
or his sovereignty, or his glory, or his effectual substitution
at work. They know who I am, and they
know I came from thee. I gave them your word, I gave
them your word, and they received them. And they know I came from
you, and listen, and they believe that you sent me. They're just
another bunch of Abrahams. They believe you. David says, I believe, therefore
I speak. And your pastor and these elders,
we don't stand here reciting doctrine. We believe what we
preach. We die for it. Because to die for it is just
to live with him. That's right. That's right, you
know. That's how you know. All right, he says here, they
received your word, they know I came from you, and they believe.
Now in verse 9, I pray for them. I pray, I pray not for the world.
You understand what he's saying? I pray for them. You gave me
authority to give life to as many as you gave me. And I manifested
your name, your word, your name to the men you gave me. And the
men you gave me, I gave them your word and they received it.
And they know who I am and they believe me. I pray for them.
I pray for them. I pray not for the world, I pray
for them which you've given me. He prays for the people for whom
he died. He prays for the people the Father gave him. He prays
for his sheep. He doesn't pray for the world. You see, all of
us pray. I pray. You pray. I pray for
you. You pray for me. I pray for myself, but I don't
know what to pray to you. I get so troubled sometimes because
the Lord doesn't tell me for what I should pray. Paul said
that. He said, we know not the things
for which we should pray. And one time the Lord, and they
permitted Satan to give him a thorn in the flesh, and he just kept
going to the Lord wanting it removed. The Lord said, shut
up, Paul. I'm not going to move it. He didn't know what to pray
for. He wanted to go to, where was
that? He wanted to go to Asia and preach, and the Holy Spirit
said, no. He said, I prayed to go to the
Bithynia, and the Holy Spirit said no. So we're not the only
ones that don't know what to pray for. Paul didn't either. But our Lord does. He knows the
will of the Father. He said, John 8, I always do
those things that please my Father. Always. I wish I could say that. He said in John 11, Father, I
thank you that you heard me, but I know you hear me always. You know why? I always pray according
to the will of my Father. That's why. He said, All that
my Father giveth me will come to me, and him that cometh to
me I will in no wise cast out. You see, I came down from heaven,
not to do my will, but to do the will of him that sent me.
This is the will of him that sent me. that of all which he
hath given me, I lose nothing, and I don't want. But I'll raise
him up at the last day. This is the will of him that
sent me, that everyone that seeth the Son, I've manifested your
name, given you word, they know who I am, that seeth the Son
and believes on him, I'll raise him up at the last day. I pray
for them. I know my sheep. I call them
by name, he said. For the sheep I have, which are
not of this foal, them I must bring, and they shall hear my
voice, and they shall be one foal, one shepherd. No man can
pluck them out of my hand. My father gave them to me, and
no man can pluck them out of his hand. I and my father won.
That bunch of reprobates reached out and picked up stones to stone
him. I embrace him. I'm glad he and the father won. And he tells us why he prays
for them and not the world. Listen. Verse 9, I pray for them. I pray not for the world. I pray
for them which thou hast given me. That's the first reason.
I pray for them because you gave them to me. I'm their surety. I'm their advocate. I'm their
sacrifice. I'm their high priest. I'm their
intercessor. And I pray for them. You gave
them to me. You put them in my hands. And I pray for them. Secondly, I pray for them for
they are mine. I pray for them because you gave
them to me and because they're yours. The Lord gave me some children.
He gave you some. They're his and he gave them
to me to enjoy. I pray for them because they're
his. They're his. And then thirdly, I pray for
them because all mine are thine and thine are mine. I pray for
them because you gave them to me because they're yours and
now they're mine. I pray for them. And fourthly,
I pray for them because they glorify me. They give me all the glory. I'm
glorified now. This world is not glorifying
our Lord Jesus Christ. There are not many preachers
glorifying the Lord Jesus Christ, our John. But I pray for them,
I pray for these, because you gave them to me before the foundation
of the world, made me their shelter. And they're yours. You said to
Jeremiah, before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee, and
I called thee mine. They're yours. And you gave them
to me, put them in my hands, And every one of them glorified
me. You ask them who their Savior
is, and they say, My Lord Jesus Christ. What did He do for you?
He died for me. Gave me a perfect holiness. He
intercedes for me. He's my all in all. He's altogether
lovely. You know over there in Song of
Solomon, John preached the other night in Song of Solomon and
said, What's your beloved more than any other beloved? She said,
You got all day, I'll tell you. And when she got through telling
them, she said, he's altogether lovely. They don't glorify themselves. They don't glorify what they
did for God. They talk about what God did
for them. They don't glorify themselves and preach their experiences
and their dreams and their visions and their projects and their
popularity and where they came from, where they're going. They
preach me. They glorify me. But that's why
I pray for them. They glorify me. I'm glorified
in them, too. And now he says, I'm no more
in the world. Verse 11, I'm no more in the
world. But they're in the world. I come to thee. Holy Father,
keep them. Keep them through thine own name,
those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one as we are.
Father, they're in the world. They're in a world of hatred.
They're in a world of dangers. They're in a world of temptations
on every hand. They're in a world of trials.
They're in a world of sorrows. I pray these you gave me, you'd
keep them. Keep them through your own name,
your own name. What is that? The knowledge of
yourself. Keep them in the knowledge of
yourself. Keep them in your Word. Abide
in me, and my Word abides in you. Keep them in your worship,
in your name, to call upon your name. Keep them there. And while
I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name, those
that thou gave me, I kept. None of them is lost, but Judas,
the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled.
None of them is lost except Judas, who was ordained to this condemnation. who was ordained to this betrayal
and denial. He was ordained to that, to fulfill
Scripture, like Satan and all of those fellows. But I kept
those that you gave me, and now I come to thee. And these things
I speak in the world, all these things that you and I have been
reading and talking about tonight, he said, I speak these things
in their hearing while I'm here with them. I speak these things
to them, and I to you. that they might have my joy."
Not theirs, my joy. Our true joy is in him, that
my joy might be fulfilled in themselves. The joy of which
he is the author, the joy which centers in him, the joy that
comes from him, is rejoicing in Christ Jesus. One of the men spoke on this
recently. Let not the wise man glow in his wisdom. Let not the
mighty man glow in his strength. Let not the rich man glow in
his riches. But he that gloweth, let him
glow in this. He knows me. So and so is Senator from Kentucky,
is he? I know the Lord. Who does he
know? We know him. We glow in that.
I've given them your word, here he says it again, I've given
them your word. And the world hates them, and
the world hates them because they're not of the world, even
as I'm not of the world. Our Lord walked this earth, they
called him a wine-dibber, he had a glass of wine, made wine
for the party there, this wedding party, and they called him a
gluttonous man, he liked good food, he ate with people. He
had friends, he visited the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus
down there in Bethany, and they fixed him meals, entertained
him. They are not of the world as I'm not of the world. It's
not that they dress differently, but that they wear ornaments
or signs that tell that they're not of the world. They're not
of the world in attitude, in spirit, in principle, in values,
in lifestyle, in their walk. They're not of the world as I'm
not of the world. That's what Christ said. Actually, a religious man can
be one of the most worthy men there is. Self, pride and righteousness,
that's worthy. Pride. Pride of grace is just
as bad as pride of face. I don't pray you should take
them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one
and the evil world. Keep them, Lord. Father, keep
them. Be not conformed to this world. You don't have to act like them. You don't have to dress like
them. You don't have to sing like them. Don't tell me they
won't start contemporary worship and contemporary music. That's
worldly worship and worldly music. I know what they're talking about.
Don't do that. Keep them from the evil one,
from being contaminated and corrupted. Evil companions will corrupt
good manners. Keep them. They're not of this
world as I'm not of the world. Now listen, sanctify them through
your word. Enable them to grow in grace
and the knowledge of me. Desire the sincere milk of the
word that you may grow thereby. Now we're sanctified by the blood
of Christ, but we're also sanctified by the word of God. We're perfect
in him and we grow in grace. and love and faith, patience,
humility, these things through the Word. Sanctify them by the
Word. Your Word is truth. And then
what's this? As thou hast sent me into the
world, so have I sent them. I send them into the world, you
and I. First of all, he sends us as
witnesses. A lot of religions separate their
people. They put them in convents, and
put them in monasteries, and put them in caves, and put them
in communes, and put them in isolated situations where they
don't have any contact with human beings. But our Lord said, I'll
send them up smack dab into the world, down to Hot Strip Mill. out the refinery, clean out the
bilges. I sent them into the world, out
there where everybody is. And I sent them as witnesses.
You be my witnesses. You tell people what you've seen
and heard. And be a blessing to them too.
You be witnesses. You be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
Judea, Samaria, and the other most parts of the earth. You
be my witness. How can you be a witness if you got nobody to
talk to? But somebody agrees with you. The witness tells what he knows,
what he's seen, what he's heard. He doesn't make anything up.
And then he said, I send them as lights in a dark day. The
only light that town's going to have is the light of believers. That's
right. I send them forth as salt. What's
salt for? Seasoning. Make old bland food
taste good. Salt. I send them forth as a
sweet fragrance of Christ. Open the alabaster box and the
sweet perfume of Christ spreads over the whole congregation.
Life unto life. Sweet smell of Christ. They're my witnesses. I send
them into the world. Now in the world, they're going
to be hated. But I'll deliver them. And in the world, they're
going to be tempted, but I'll strengthen them. And in the world,
they're going to have sorrow, but I'll comfort them. And in
the world, they're going to suffer. But Peter said, after they've
suffered a while, I'll make them perfect, establish, strengthen,
and settle them. Verse 19, For their sakes I sanctify
myself, that they might be sanctified through the truth. The Lord didn't
make himself holy, he's imminently holy. But he's saying, I set
myself apart as a man, as a redeemer, as a representative. I sanctify
myself. I set myself apart as a sin offering,
that they might be sanctified. Neither pray I for these alone,
but for them also which shall believe on me. They shall, they
will, my sheep shall hear my voice, and they shall believe
through their word. That's how people are converted,
through their word. Preaching, just what I'm doing
right now, what you did this morning, preaching the Word.
That's how people, that's the only way they're going to believe. It pleased God by the foolishness
of preaching to save them that believe. Whosoever shall call
on the name of the Lord shall be saved. But how are they going
to call on Him in whom they've not believed? And how are they
going to believe in Him of whom they've not heard? And how are
they going to hear without a preacher? And how are they going to preach
if God didn't send them? So I've sent them into the world.
And I pray not only for those I've sent, but I pray for those
to whom I send them, because they're going to believe. I pray that they all might be
one, listen, as thou, Father, art in me and I in thee, that
they also may be one in us, that the world may believe thou hast
sent me, and the glory, here's my closing comment, let you go,
the glory which you gave me. I've given them, that they may
be one even as we are one. I in them, and thou in me, that
they may be made perfect and one, that the world may know
thou hast loved, thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as you
have loved me. Father, I will that they also
whom thou hast given me be with me where I am, that they may
behold my glory which thou hast given me, for thou lovest me
before the foundation of the world. Now Moses prayed, Lord,
show me your glory. And the disciples on the Mount
of Transfiguration, it says, and they saw his glory. And Isaiah
said of him in John 12, when he saw his glory, Isaiah 6, I
saw the Lord. He spake of him. But Paul said
when he visited the third heaven, paradise he said, and came back. He said, I heard things not possible
to others. So I thought when I looked at
that text, the glory which the Father gave the Son, He's given
to me and to you. But if Paul couldn't put it in
words, I'm not going to try to either, Ronnie. That's why the
conclusion I came to, just not going to try. It's glory. But I know this, when by the
gift, of his wonderful grace, that I'm accorded in heaven a
place just to be there and look on his face, will through the
ages be glory. Glory for me, for you.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
