What does the Bible say about salvation in Christ?

The Bible teaches that salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ, who purged our sins and offers everlasting life.

The Scripture clearly states that salvation is found in Christ alone, as emphasized in Hebrews 2:1-4. This passage indicates the greatness of the salvation spoken by the Lord. Jesus, being God, provided a complete revelation of God's grace to humanity. By believing in Him and His sacrifice, sinners are justified by faith and have passed from death to life, illustrated in verses like John 5:24. This firm foundation of salvation through Christ underscores the necessity of placing Him at the center of our faith and lives.

Hebrews 2:1-4, John 5:24

How do we know the doctrine of Christ's superiority is true?

The Bible affirms Christ's superiority over all messengers and prophets, as He is the very Son of God.

Hebrews 1 and 2 expound on the superiority of Christ over all previous messengers, including angels and prophets. In Hebrews 1:4, it is declared that Jesus has inherited a more excellent name than the angels. This establishes His supremacy as the ultimate revelation of God to man. Since He is the embodiment of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature (Hebrews 1:3), the truth of His superiority is essential for our understanding of redemption and the full revelation of God's grace. The acknowledgment of Christ’s authority and identity is crucial for our faith.

Hebrews 1:4, Hebrews 1:3

Why is it important for Christians to heed God’s word?

Christians must earnestly heed God’s word to maintain spiritual vitality and avoid falling into apathy.

Hebrews 2:1 commands believers to give more earnest heed to the things they have heard, highlighting the necessity of responsiveness to Scripture. Neglecting the messages of Christ leads to a spiritual drift, impacting one’s understanding and relationship with God. The sermon reflects the dire consequences faced by those who ignored the words delivered by inferior messengers, asking how much more perilous it would be to neglect the words of the Son of God. Therefore, attentive engagement with God’s word is vital for spiritual growth and obedience to ensure we do not let the great salvation slip away.

Back here in chapter 1, verse
1, it says, God, who at sundry times and in different manners
or ways spake to our fathers by the prophets, hath in these
last days spoken to us by son. In other words, therefore, since
God has spoken to us by Christ, Christ has come. and given us
the Father's words. He said, I've given them thy
words, I've manifested thy name to them, since that be true. And verse 3, this one by whom
the Father has spoken and through whom he has spoken is none other
than the God-man, his son. He said in verse 3, who being
in the brightness of God's glory, and the exact image of His person
and upholding all things by the word of His power when He had
by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of God. We have a full revelation in
this day of God's mercy and grace and redemption in Christ Jesus,
a full revelation. Christ has come. Back in the
Old Testament, the prophets gave witness to Christ who would come. But here, Christ has come. Everything's
been done. He is at the right hand of the
majesty on high. That being so, therefore that
being so. And verse 4, and He's so much
better than the angels. He's so much better than any
prophet. that these folks back yonder heard. He's greater than
Moses as he who built the house is greater than the house. And
he's so much more excellent than all the priests that God had
to send a special priest to be a type of Christ. Melchizedek. And he's so much
better than all the types and shadows and sacrifices. Verse
4, see, being so much better than the angels as he hath by
inheritance obtained a more excellent name than them, than they, God
has given him a name above every name. You name any name. And
the one who's spoken to us is infinitely, infinitely above
all of them put together. Chapter 2. Therefore, my, my,
since that being so, therefore, since God has spoken to us by
His Son, since God's been pleased to give us the full revelation
of His mercies in Christ, since the one, our messenger,
the last messenger incidentally, there'll be no other messenger. There'll be no other messenger.
There'll be no other message. They talk about during the millennium
or the great tribulation or whenever, there's going to be some other
kind of gospel. Oh, no. No, no. This is it. This is it. Since Christ is so much more
excellent and so infinitely greater and better than anything that's
preceded Him, because He's God, therefore, we, that's you and
You and I, we ought to give the more earnest heed to these things
which we've heard. What have we heard? What have we heard? Some time ago up at Dingus where
I was preaching last week, where Brother Hap is pastor, There's a little boy in the church
named Gary. I guess he's what, Evelyn? Ten,
nine, eight, somewhere in there, a little boy named Gary. And
his father or grandfather, one, asked him, said, Son, do you hear anything Brother
Hap's saying? He said, I try not to, but sometimes
I do anyway. I try not to. What have we heard? He said,
I hear something anyway. Even though I try not to, I've
heard something. He said, therefore, all this
being so, we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things
which we've heard. What have you heard? Well, I
want you to go back to John chapter 5 for a few moments. This is
what I've heard. This is what I've heard that
messenger say. That one who has a name above
everything. That one more excellent than
all the angels of God. That last messenger, that one
who by himself purged our sins, he said in John 5 verse 17, Jesus
answered them. My Father worketh hitherto and
I work. And therefore these Jews sought
the more to kill him because he not only had broken their
Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father making himself
equal with God. I heard that. I and my Father
warned. Jesus Christ is not a son of
God. He is the Living God. The Son of the Living God. He's
wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace. He is God Almighty. I heard that. I've heard that. Have you? Those are the things we've heard. Down here in verse 21, For as
the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them, even so
the Son quickeneth whom he will. I've heard that. He says, I am the way, the truth,
and I am the life. He gives life to whom he will.
Life is not just in Christ, life is Christ. He is the life. And he'll be merciful to whom
he will, he'll be gracious to whom he will, he'll give life
to whom he will, he'll quicken whom he will. Salvations of the
Lord. I've heard that. I've heard it
many, many times. I've heard it from him. I've
heard it. Have you heard it? Read on. Verse 22, the Father judges no
man but hath committed all judgment to the Son. God's appointed a
day in which He's going to judge this whole world by that man
whom He hath appointed. All judgment's in the hands of
Christ. It's not what you think of me, or what you think of yourself,
or what you think of the religion, religious world, it's what think
ye of Christ, whose Son is He. You heard that? I've heard that.
All life is in His hands, all judgment is in His hands. It's
not what will I do with Jesus, it's what will Jesus do with
me. Will He own me? Verse 23, I've heard Him say
this, that all men should honor the Son even as they honor the
Father. And he that honoreth not the
Son, I don't care what he does, claims, accomplishes, honors,
He that honoreth not the Son, honoreth not the Father that
sent him." It's impossible for a man to know God, love God,
honor God, worship God, or be identified with God apart from
his relationship with Christ Jesus. That's right. That's where
it all is, in Christ. In Christ. That's true. It's
all in Christ. Well, that's where it ought to
be. That's where it ought to be, in Christ. He's accomplished
all that The law requires and justice demands. He is our righteousness,
wisdom and sanctification and redemption. It's all in Him.
In Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. All fullness
is in Him. It pleased God to put it that. I don't honor Him. I don't honor
God. If I don't know Him, I don't know God. Have you heard that? I've heard that. I've heard that. And verse 24, thank God for this,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, truly, truly, he that heareth
my word, my word, and believeth on him
that sent me hath everlasting life, justified by faith." Not by works,
not by law, no, by faith. I've heard that. And I know people say you're
fanatical, you're radical, you're narrow-minded, you've got a message
with one note. Well, it's one gospel. There
is no other gospel. There is no other way. There
is no other life. There is no other hope. The other
foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, Christ Jesus.
There's none other name under heaven given among men whereby
we must be saved. It's Christ. We're supposed to live and let
live, and that's fine in every area but God's glory, and it
can't be compromised. And a preacher cannot be faithful
who allows it to be compromised. He cannot be faithful to God.
He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me,
hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation, but
through Christ is already passed from death unto life." By the
grace of God, by the covenant of mercy, by the blood of Christ,
by the righteousness of Christ, by God-given faith and regeneration
have come to look to Christ and believe on Him and receive Him
and trust Him. We already have passed from death
unto life. I'm already resurrected. I'm
already risen. I'm already seated with Christ. I'm already in glory. I'm already
within the veil. It's just a matter of that being
accomplished in my body. I'm already there. Isn't that
true? He said he's already passed from
death unto life. There's no use arguing about
once saved, always saved, once in grace, always in grace and
that sort of thing. I'm already in heaven. What was it Mr. Falwell kept
saying? If you are saved and And believe
you're going to heaven as if you were already there. If you're
in Christ, you are already there. That's right. You cannot pass
away. You cannot die. You cannot perish. You shall never perish. Seated
with Him in the heavenlies. And that's just what I've heard.
Barely, barely I'm saying to you, the hour is coming and now
is when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and
they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in
himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself. Now back to our text. Is that
what we've heard? Therefore, these things being
so, We ought, you and I, we ought to give the more earnest, dedicated,
consecrated, earnest hee-hee to the things which we've heard,
lest at any time we let them slip. And the word here in the margin
is run out as a leaky vessel. Run out. Let them slip. I feel like the preachers ought
to get more personal. I think we ought to get more
personal than we do. I don't mean we ought to embarrass
anybody, but you know David, Nathan came and said, gave him
a parable, and then he said, you're the man. That took a lot
of courage. David was the king. David would
have his head off. It wasn't a matter of losing
his job and his retirement, it was losing his head. He said,
you're the fella. And on this area right here,
lest at any time We let them slip. These things we've heard,
this foundation, this rock, this refuge. Spurgeon asked this question,
how do you let them slip? How do you let them slip? How
do people who hear these things, the Son of God, the Son of God
is our messenger, the Son of God is our prophet, the Son of
God has given us God the Father's Word. How do we lose them? How do we lose these things?
Let them slip. How do they go through here out
the other side and do not profit us? You know, Israel, the Scripture
said, heard the gospel, but it did not profit them. It did not
profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard
it. Well, how do we do this? Our Lord gave the parable of
the sower, remember? He said, a sower went forth to
sow. He said, the sower is the son of man, the seed is the word
of God. This word. And he said, as he sowed the
seed, some of it fell on the wayside. Some of it fell on the
fallow ground, unplowed ground. And that's how men let them slip,
by not receiving them when they're preached. by not acting then
and there upon it. In other words, he said this
seed fell on the fallow ground and as the sower went on by,
that the birds of the air sitting up there in the trees swooped
down and picked up the seed and took it away. And it was gone. It never bore any fruit. So we
hear a message. We hear a word spoken. We hear
God's servant deal with a particular situation or a particular area,
and we listen to it, we hear it, but we don't act on it. We don't act on it then and there.
We go on about our business, and the way we are made up, we
don't even remember it. We can't even call it to mind.
Let's see, it seems like I heard a message. Somebody will say,
I heard a message on that one time, but I can't recall what
it was, or the text. The time to act on it is now. Isn't that right? The time for the seed to bear
fruit is when it hits the soil. And so we let them slip, Spurgeon
said, by not receiving them right then. when they pray, acting
on it right there, right there. I know when we're dealing with
one another, we can say, well, I have a more convenient season,
I'll call on you. You don't deal with God that
way. Am I correct? God doesn't accept
our excuses. That's what they said to our
Lord, let me first go bury my father. He said, let the dead
bury the dead. Well listen, I bought a piece
of land, let me first go and prove it. Take up your cross
now and follow me. Now. Now. Secondly, if Spurgeon
said this, we let them slip by being taken up with other things. Now I'm getting, I've told you
this story one time and I'll repeat it, but when you get a
little older, people, I don't know whether they'll
listen to you more or they just figure you're old and you're
going to say it anyway. But I went to the hospital to visit a man
one time. I guess he was in his early 80s.
I'd never seen him before in my life, but he watched us on
television. I went in and I walked in. He said, so you're Mayhan. I
said, yes, sir. He said, you look a whole lot
better on TV than you do in person. I said, well, I'll be glad when
I get your age so I can say things like that. But I sat down with a friend
the day before yesterday, and I don't believe she would mind
me telling this. She's a good friend. She and
her husband are going to open a restaurant. They're building
it now, and they're going to open it in about three weeks
or a month. And I sat down with her. And
I said, now, you're opening this restaurant, and I'm going to
give you some advice. And I said, I know what I'm talking
about. I've got years of experience. I know exactly what I'm talking
about. I'm talking out of scripture, experience, and concern and compassion
for you. Don't you open that restaurant
on Sunday. Don't you open it on Sunday.
You shut her down on Saturday and open it up Monday morning.
There are a lot of reasons for that. Number one, you don't need
to work seven days a week because she's going to work in it, manage
it, do the cooking, serving, small restaurant. I said, secondly,
if you keep it open on Sunday, that's the end of you and worship.
That's the end of you and God. That's the end of you and the
church. Oh, you'll try for a while. You'll try for a while. You'll
try to make a service and get somebody to pinch it for you,
but I said after a few weeks, you're gone. You won't be in
church anymore. Your husband won't be there and
your children won't be there. And your people that work for
you are going to be down at that restaurant. Everything is going
to be centered around that restaurant. That's going to be your life
and God's gone out of your life. And I said thirdly, If you stay
open on Sunday, and neglect the house of the Lord, and the worship
of God, and the testimony of God, and the gospel of God, you
can't ask God to bless you. And I can't ask Him to bless
you either. Is that too hard? What was it? She said, well, I want that question
answered. And you answered it. I said,
well, you believe me now. Don't you let anybody talk you
into doing anything differently. I'm warning you. I'm warning
you. Now, I know you've got to make
a living. I know you folks out here have got to make a living,
but you've got to die and meet God too. And I'll tell you, these things,
when our Lord talked about that seed being sown, He said some
of it fell among the thorns. And all of you listen to me now.
There's a man here tonight that just comes around once in a while,
he's here about every six months, and you know who you are. But
your pastor's telling you, and I know you've got a lot of justifiable
reasons for not worshiping God, but it ain't justified with God. It's not justified with God.
And I know, he said, you sow that seed among the thorns and
these things grow up. I know children and jobs and
associations and games and schools and training and all this demands
our time, work. I'm going to build a house. Well,
I tell you, shut her down Sunday morning, Saturday night, and
don't go back till Monday morning. And come sit here and worship
God. Now that's all there is to it. That's just, I'm telling
you the truth. I'm telling you the truth. Those thorns sprang up and crushed
the seed. You let it slip. Let her slip. It's dangerous. Cares and riches.
Crowd out the Word of God. What I told that dear lady. I've
seen it happen so many times, it's sad, it's pathetic, it's
heartbreaking, but I've seen it happen so many times. People
seem to be so interested in the gospel. I've seen men who had
a simple job and a simple life and a simple way of life, and
they were interested in the gospel and the fellowship of Christ
and in the worship services over Lord's Day, except once in a
while, but most every Lord's Day. And they got promoted, and
they began to make money, and they began to get active, and
they began to have other outreaches, and they began to be popular,
and all this thing. After a while, they're gone.
Let them slip! Isn't that right? Am I telling the truth? Is this the truth I hear? They
let them slip. And brother, let me tell you
something, it's like a leaking vessel. After a while, If there's
a hole in here, after a while, there ain't nothing left in here.
And you're just a shell walking around making like you know God.
But your vessel is empty. My cup runneth over. But I tell you, when your cup
runs over, it's when He every day fills it. Every day is a
day of worship and praise. The Lord's day is the Lord's
day. It's the time to worship God. And you old folks here with
the white hair that have been here all these years, I'm telling
the truth, aren't I? Don't let them slip. Don't let
them slip. One little profit a man can gain
the whole world and lose his soul. And then I'll tell you another
way Spurgeon said we let them slip by removing ourselves from
where they're preached. Don't leave the gospel. There are people who will get
this tape and listen to it. And they have no place to worship
God. And I say to most of them, they
could have if they wanted one, badly enough. They could have. Might have to sacrifice a little
bit. Might have to do without some of the luxuries that we
think we have to have. But I'd rather be a doorkeeper
in the house of God. You know what David said? Then
dwell in the tents of wickedness. Prosperous. Might. Well, I tell you, Spurgeon gave
the fourth thing here, and I've got to move on. He said, We've heard these things. We
ought to give the more earnest heed to these things lest we
let them slip. And I'll tell you another way
is being, is a poor attitude and hardness of heart and not
being willing to accept the Word as it's preached, personally. That's right. Don't get offended at God's servant.
Paul said, am I going in because I tell you the truth? This lady
I was talking to, I was telling her the truth. Do you think I
was her enemy? I'm the best friend she's got. I'm the best friend she's got,
and I'm helping her. Now, if she hardens her heart
against what I said, says none of his business, then that's
a bad attitude. And she'll lose it. So that's
the way we let them slip. Now let me move on quickly. Verse 2 says, For if the word
spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience
received a just recompense of reward. In other words, those
who refused to hear Noah perished. Didn't they? So what this word
angels means here, the word spoken by angels, it can refer to anyone,
any messenger inferior to Christ. Doesn't matter what's an angel
from heaven or a messenger from heaven or a prophet or a preacher
or an apostle or whomever, any messenger inferior to Christ.
This is what it's saying here, Ronnie. It's saying, if these
messengers came along, Noah, people that didn't hear Noah,
perished. The Israelites who wouldn't listen to Moses, they
perished in the wilderness. King Saul, he wouldn't listen
to Samuel, and God destroyed him. Uzziah, he wouldn't listen
to those forty-some odd priests that told him, don't go in the
Holy of Holies. He went anyway. He perished.
See, so what it's saying here, If the message and the word delivered
by these inferior creatures, these inferior messengers, if
God dealt with every transgression and disobedience in a just recompense
and a just way, listen to verse 3, how are we going to escape?
How are we going to escape? If we neglect so great salvation,
which at first began as spoken by our Lord Himself, and was
confirmed unto us by them that heard, if we don't get serious,
if we don't get the most earnest heed, if these people who just
heard a man, they heard Noah, they heard Moses, they heard
Samuel, they heard these prophets, they just heard, and God dealt
with them in a severe manner, how do we think that we're going
to get by and escape having heard the Son of God? Oh, it's called a great salvation,
so how shall we escape if we neglect? That's the title of
this message, how shall we escape? How are we going to escape? If
we neglect so grave... You know what makes this salvation
so great? Number one, because of the greatness of the character
of the preacher. Our Lord Jesus Christ. He said,
He that has seen me has seen my Father. Who's God's preacher
here? His Son. Who's God's prophet
here? His Son. Who's God's voice here? His Son. And the character of
the preacher makes this a great salvation. That is something
else that makes it great, because of the wisdom of his message.
It enables God to be just and justified. It's a message. This gospel is a gospel that
justifies God, that glorifies God, that honors God, that accomplishes
God's purpose, that enables God to be God, and yet justifies
sinners like you and me. Tell you another thing that makes
this gospel, this salvation so great, what it cost. You know
the value, usually the value of anything is determined by
this question, what it cost. What it cost. I'll tell you what
it cost. You're not redeemed with corruptible
things of silver and gold, but with the precious blood of the
Son of God. Oh, what a price was paid for
our redemption, this great salvation. Tell you something else that
makes it great. How are we going to escape if we neglect this
great salvation? Tell you something else that
makes it great, and that's the power of it. The power of it. It has the power to give life
where death has reigned. It has the power to forgive all
sin, to abound where sin abounded. It much more abounds. It has
the power to make the unholy holy and the unrighteous righteous. It has the power to keep us from
falling and in His grace. It has the power to raise our
vile bodies. It has the power to make us like
Christ. It's the power of God. under
salvation. Boy, I tell you, if the message
and the words spoken by all these inferior prophets and these inferior
messengers whom God sent down through the hundreds of years,
decades and millenniums, If every transgression and disobedience
against their message received a just recompense of reward from
the hand of God, you think, how are we going to escape if we
neglect and count as a little thing and walk under our feet
and receive it with indifference and put everything else first
and everyone else first? How are we going to escape? If
we let it slip, if we look at it and look upon it with less
than total commitment, how in the world are we going to escape? It at first began to be spoken
by our Lord and was confirmed by them that hurt him. I want
to deal with one other verse before I quit tonight. It was confirmed by them that
hurt him. confirmed by them that heard him. And then it says in
verse 4, God also bearing them witness, both with signs and
wonders and with different miracles and gifts of the Holy Ghost according
to his own will. Now then, these men who saw Christ
and heard Christ and received their message directly from Christ,
and from God, going all the way back to Moses. These men were
also given unusual gifts and unusual signs from Him as proof
and evidence that God had sent them. Proof to them and to their
hearers. by that bush that burned and
wasn't consumed. And he needed some confirmation. He needed some proof. He needed
some evidence. And God told him, said, Moses,
put your hand in your bosom. He did. He took it out. White
with leprosy. Put it back, Moses. Put it back.
Clean as it was before. God said, now you go preach.
Well, what if they won't hear me? How am I going to lead them
out? What's that in your hand? A shepherd rod. Throw it down.
It became a snake. Pick it up. It became a rod.
You see, when Moses was called to go to Egypt to deliver the
nation Israel, God gave him unusual gifts and signs as proof and
evidence, not only for him but for them and for the pagan nation. He caused the Nile River to turn
to blood, lice and frogs and hail, fire and all these things. And then when Gideon was called
upon to go out against the enemies of the Lord, he laid the fleece
out. And it was wet, wasn't it, and
all around it dry. He laid it out again, it was
dry and all around it was wet. Proof. Evidence. Convincing. He needed it. The people needed it. And when
the apostles were sent out, the early elders of the church, they
were given these gifts and signs. For the work whereunto they were
called was a peculiar work, a new thing, a new message, a difficult message,
a superhuman task. They had no New Testament Scriptures.
All they had was the Old Testament, and they were going forth in
the name of Christ a man of Nazareth whom everybody knew was crucified.
And they went out and God gave these gifts. He gave them gifts
similar to the ones He gave Christ. You know, John the Baptist sent
word to Christ and he said, Are you the Christ or do we look
for another? And he said to the messengers, You go tell John
lame walk and the blind see and the deaf hear and the dumb speak.
Go show him these things. He said these works are witnesses,
evidences and proof that God sent us. You see what I'm saying? And that's what he's saying here
in verse 4. This great salvation spoken by our Lord and by those
that heard Him, and before they wrote the New Testament, when
they went out among these pagan, heathen nations, even among Israel,
God bore witness to the fact that they spoke for God. Nicodemus
said to Christ, we know you came from God, no man could do what
you do except God be with him. That's what they said about the
Apostle. God bore them witness with these signs and wonders.
Now listen, listen to Brother Megan. I do not believe these
gifts and signs are in the church today. I don't care what these
preachers on television say and I don't care what they get up
and act act out these different things. These gifts and signs
are not in the church. They weren't in the church in
Spurgeon's day. They weren't in the church in Edward's day.
They weren't in the church in Isaac Watt's day. They weren't
in the church in William Carey and Judson and Bunyan. Those men never heard of these
things except in the scriptures. That's right. But one reason
is because they're not necessary. They're not necessary today.
The Scriptures are complete. You don't need me to heal the
sick or the blind or raise the dead to prove anything to you.
You just need me to take this book and read it to you and preach
it. It's the Word of Christ. It's
the Word of God. Besides that, signs are not for
believers. Signs are for unbelievers. Let
me show you that in Acts. I mean 1 Corinthians 14. Turn
to 1 Corinthians 14. 1 Corinthians 14, verse 22. These preachers say, well, if
you speak with an unknown tongue, that's a sign that you've been
baptized with the Holy Ghost. No, it isn't, because tongues
are not a sign to the believer. 1 Corinthians 14, 22, wherefore
tongues are for a sign not to them that believe, but to them
that believe not. That's why God sent these signs
to begin with. All a believer needs is the Word
of God. He doesn't need proof, signs, wonders. But prophesying,
preaching, serveth not for them that believe, not but for them
which believe. All you need is the Word of God. Well, these
men, Tom, went out and they didn't have the New Testament. We do. Now stay with me. The New Testament
scriptures are now complete. And any signs that I stood up
here and tried to perform, any miracle, would be like me shining
a candle to help the sun. Isn't that right? Be like a candle. This is the
Word of God. This is the Word of God. And
it'd be like me pouring water in the oceans. Besides that,
here's two things you always remember. and wonders and miracles
have never given faith to those that sought them. Never. Moses did all these powerful
miracles and yet Israel perished in the wilderness. These signs
didn't help them believe God, did they? Pharaoh didn't help
him believe God. Our Lord said this, He said,
the rich man in hell said, well, send Lazarus back to my brothers. And the Lord said, Abraham said,
they have Moses, they have the Moses and the prophets, they
got the word of God. He said, no, but if one rose from the
dead, they'd believe. He said, they won't believe,
though one rose from the dead. I tell you, one did rise from
the dead, our Lord Jesus Christ, and it didn't convince those
Jews. In fact, the officials paid the soldiers to lie. They
said, that man rose from the grave. They said, now don't tell
that. And if the governor says anything to you, we'll get you
out of trouble. My friends, there's no connection between seeing
wonders and believing God in the heart. In fact, let me ask
you this. If you had to choose tonight,
if you had to choose tonight between living back here when
they were in the church at Carleth performing these miracles and
living in a time when the canon of scripture was complete, which
would you take? I'd take the scriptures. If tonight
God would say to you, I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll give you
a message from an angel in exchange for the scriptures. Which would
you take? I'll tell you what Peter said about that. Turn to
1 Peter. Or 2 Peter. Tell you what he
said about it. 2 Peter. Listen to this. You know, I know
we're all We'd kind of like to go home tonight and have an angel
sitting there on the couch waiting on us to talk to us about God
and things of God. But let me ask you now, would
you exchange this for that experience? I wouldn't. Because this is the
Word of God and it's always with me. That's an experience that
after the years pass I might look back and say, I'm not sure
I remember what he said. Was that really an angel or was
that the devil?
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
