What does the Bible say about being in Christ?

The Bible teaches that all spiritual blessings and God's decrees are found in Christ Jesus.

Paul's epistle to the Ephesians asserts that God has blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, specifically in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). The assurance of salvation and acceptance before God is rooted in our union with Christ, meaning everything God has purposed for His people is realized through this relationship. The importance of being 'in Christ' is echoed in various scriptures that express our identity, security, and hope found in this divine union.

Ephesians 1:3, 2 Timothy 1:9

How do we know that salvation is in Christ?

We know salvation is in Christ because Scripture clearly states that He is the way, the truth, and the life.

John 14:6 affirms that Jesus is the exclusive pathway to salvation: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.' Additionally, passages such as Ephesians 2:8-9 emphasize that salvation is a gift of God given through faith in Christ, not through our works. The entirety of God's plan for redemption centers on Christ, indicating that our relationship with Him is foundational to our salvation.

John 14:6, Ephesians 2:8-9

Why is union with Christ significant for Christians?

Union with Christ is significant because it is through Him that we receive all of God's blessings and grace.

The significance of our union with Christ is profound as it represents our participation in everything He has accomplished on our behalf. Scripture teaches that we are joint heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17), and this union grants us access to God's grace and blessings. Moreover, our identity as believers hinges on being in Christ; it is how we experience the fullness of His grace, love, and mercy. Without this vital unity, we would be severed from the source of our spiritual life.

Romans 8:17, Ephesians 1:3

What does faith in Christ accomplish?

Faith in Christ accomplishes our salvation and union with Him, allowing us to partake in His promises.

Faith is the means by which we enter into a relationship with Christ, as expressed in Ephesians 2:8-9, which teaches that we are saved by grace through faith. This faith not only unites us with Christ but also assures us of the promises and blessings that flow from this relationship. It is through believing in Him that we receive light, righteousness, and redemption, maintaining that our spiritual life and growth are rooted in our continuing faith in Jesus.

Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 5:1

Wednesday night, the Lord willing,
we're going to observe the Lord's Table. I told my Sunday school
class this morning, it was very providential, that our lesson
this morning was on the Passover and carried over into the observance
of the Lord's Table. I'll be preaching Wednesday night
on that subject again, and we'll observe the Lord's Table. ask who's invited. Those who love Christ are invited.
I learned a long time ago that it's not my table, it's His table. It's not the 13th Street Baptist
Church's table. We hedge it about by His grace,
but it's the Lord's table. And those who love Christ and
those who discern His broken body and shed blood, come with
us and let's remember our Lord. If He's your Lord and my Lord,
we can remember Him together. I ought to. So that's what we'll do Wednesday
night, God willing, is observe the Lord's table and praise Him
and worship Him and I'll try to do a little preaching. on
which then I'd about the sacrifice of Christ. Now, I'm going to
be speaking this morning on the subject in Christ Jesus, in Christ
Jesus. And I'll be using for a text
2 Timothy, if you want to open your Bibles to the book of 2
Timothy. But before I read my text and
get into the Scripture, I want to mention a sermon I read several
years ago. I've read, you can imagine, in
all these years, many sermons, many, many, many sermons, some
of which I remember and some I don't. But one among all the
messages and sermons by preachers of the past and present, which
I have read through the years, one of my favorites, one of my
favorites, is found in John Flavel's book, Method of Grace. We had
it in our church bookstore, Method of Grace. I advised all of our
young ministers to secure this book, Method of Grace, and read
it and re-read it and re-read it by John Flavel. And he has
a message in there called the Method of Grace. That's the title
of the message and the book. And there are five points. And
this was such a blessing to me because it's my creed, it's what
I believe. And here are the five points.
I want you to listen to them. All that God Almighty has decreed
and designed and purposed for sinners, for the sinners of Adam's
race, that's you and me, every sinner from Abel to this present
day, Everything that God has purposed and designed for sinners
is in the Lord Jesus Christ. He's the fountain of all grace.
He's the fountain of all mercies. He's the fountain of life. The
scripture says all of the promises of God are in Him. All of the
promises of God are in Him, yea and amen. And blessed be the
God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with
all spiritual blessings in heavenly places. Where? In Christ. That's
where they are, in Christ. The Father loves you in Christ.
The Father redeems you in Christ. The Father accepts you in Christ.
Everything's in Christ. Jesus Christ of God is made unto
us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, and all that
I need is in Christ. Now, can you remember that first
point? Everything plus nothing minus
nothing that the Almighty God of heaven and earth has willed
and purposed and decreed for you spiritually is in Christ
Jesus. All right, here's the second
point in that message. These mercies, and oh what mercies
they are, this grace and oh unmerited favor, this grace is ours by
a union with Christ. In other words, it's not as if
God had decreed the blessings and piled them up and dispenses
them individually to persons. These blessings are in Christ.
And I participate and partake of these blessings by being in
Christ, by union with Christ. If I am one with Him, then what
is His is mine. Now, he uses three illustrations. Our Lord uses these. He said,
Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave
Himself for it. In other words, my relationship
as a sinner saved by the grace of God with Christ is like a
husband and wife. Now, the husband may be a very
wealthy man. He may be an heir to a lot of
things. Well, what is his is his wife's. When she married him, what is
his becomes hers. D'Arcy and I don't have a lot
of this world's goods, but I can tell you this, everything I have
is hers. She can write the checks as she
wants to. That's what we got down there
to check on, you know, but it's hers. Everything is because she
and I are one. We have the same name, Mr. and
Mrs. Henry Mayer. And what's mine is hers, because
we're one flesh. Christ said the two shall be
one flesh, and that's what we are in Christ. We're married
to Christ. We're His bride. We're one with Him. So He's the
heir, and we're joint heirs with Christ. Then He uses a vine and
branch. He says, I am the vine, and you're
the branches. Now that's a pretty close relationship,
isn't it? Here you've got a vine growing
here, a grapevine, and the branches growing out of the vine. Well,
what affects the branches affects the vine. What affects the vine
affects the branches. The life is from the vine. And
the branches bear fruit, but where do the branches get their
nourishment and strength? From the vine. They're one. You
don't walk by a grape arbor and say, there's vine and branches.
You just say, there's a grape vine. The branches are in the
vine. And that's the way it is. That's
how we have life. He is the life, and I have life
because I'm in Him. I have light. He's the light. I walk in His light. Do you understand
what I'm saying? By union with Christ. Oh, how
important that is. That's the foundation. All right,
here's the third point. Oh, the third reference he uses
is the head and the body. He said, I'm the head, you're
the body. God sets the members in the body. Christ is the head
of the church, and we're the body. And Christ puts the members
in the body as it pleases Him. But I tell you, when we talk about a person,
we don't say, Brother so-and-so's head and his body just said brother
so-and-so. Head and body is one. What belongs
to the head belongs to the body. Somebody said where the head
is, the body is not too far behind, you know. And Christ is the head
and we're the body. We're one. That's how everything
God has, he said the Father loveth the Son and hath given all things
into his hands. It belongs to him. This is His
world. This is His universe. This is
His kingdom. It's the kingdom of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ. Now, I want a part of that. I
want to participate in that. I want the joys and riches of
that. How am I going to have it? To be in Him. One with Christ. And what God gives the Son, He
gives me. All right, third. Here's the third point. This
union with Christ. Now our sins have separated us
from God. We're born in sin, we're born
dead in sin. But this union with Christ comes
to us by God's grace through faith. That's how I become one
with Christ, by faith. He that believeth on the Son
hath light. He that believeth not the Son
shall not see light. Ephesians 2, 8 and 9 says this,
for by grace are you saved, by grace God gives us these mercies,
by his grace, they are the gift of God. But by grace are you
saved through faith, through faith in Christ. Come unto me
all ye that labour and are heavy laden, I will give you rest.
For every one that thirsteth, come to the water, Christ is
the water. You see, O Abraham, this is what it says, what the
scripture says about Abraham. Abraham believed, and it was
counted to him for righteousness. So everything God has is in Christ. It will be mine by union with
Christ. That union with Christ is accomplished by my coming
to Christ, by my believing on Christ, by my receiving Christ. Isn't that right? By my commitment
to the Lord Jesus Christ. He's my Lord and my God. He's
my hope. He's my life. He's my salvation. These blessings don't come to
me by coming to a church building, or to a denomination, or to an
altar, or to a preacher, or to a position. The blessings are
in Him. And that union with Christ is
affected by faith in Him. People say, well, I believe the
Bible. I do too, and that's good. But life's not in the Bible,
it's in Christ. Well, I believe the doctrines
of grace, well, I do too, and that's commendable. But salvation's
not in the doctrines of grace, it's in Christ. Well, I believe
a man ought to live a good life, I do too. Everybody will profit
by that. But salvation's not in how I
live, it's in how he lived, and how he died, and where he is
now is by coming to Christ. to confess Christ. If thou shalt
confess with thy mouth Jesus to be Lord, and believe in thine
heart, God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For
with the heart man believeth under righteousness, with the
mouth confession is made unto salvation. Now here's the fourth
point, Mr. Flavel's message. This faith
that unites me to Christ, this faith, faith of Abraham, faith
of Noah, the whole The 11th and 12th chapter of Hebrews is the
hall of faith. Not the hall of fame, the hall
of faith. Abraham believed God. Sarah believed God. Noah believed
God. Enoch walked with God. Abel believed
God. This faith, you see, is the product
of the Word of God. How does a man come to a union
with Christ? By faith. How does a man come
to faith? By the Word of God. That's right. You see, faith cometh by hearing,
and hearing by the Word of God. That's exactly right. James 1.18
says this, of his own will, this is God's will and work, of his
own will, begat he us through the Word of truth. First Peter 1.23 says this, we're
born again. We have new life. We're born
again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible seed by
the word of God. By the word of God, which liveth
and abideth forever. Paul said in Ephesians 1.13,
in whom you trusted after you heard the word of faith, the
gospel of your salvation, in whom after you believed, you
were sealed in a union with Christ by that Holy Spirit of promise
until the purchased possession is accomplished and becomes your...
Here are the words, God hath chosen by the preaching of the
word of God to save them that believe. Get under the word.
I have people often who get an interest in spiritual matters
and they say, I want to come over and sit down and talk to
you. Well, that's all fine, that talking's all right, but I'll
tell you what God blesses. He blesses the preaching of his
word. Now that's where, right here, right here, preaching the
word. Here's where counseling is done,
here's where comforting is accomplished, here's where discipline, don't
appoint a discipline committee in your church, preach the word
of God. The Holy Spirit is our comforter, the Holy Spirit is
our corrector. The Holy Spirit is our teacher.
Preach. And if you're interested in what
God says, come and hear what God says. If you're interested
in a relationship with Christ, don't go around talking to every
religious Tom, Dick, and Harry. Don't even come talk to Henry.
Tom, Dick, and Henry. Hear the Word. God promises to
bless His Word. That's what He'll bless. Read
the Word. I'm not God. Read the Word. That's what I'm doing. I want
to know Christ. I want to know God. I want to
live forever in the Kingdom of God. I'm not going to compare
notes with everybody coming down the pike. I'm going to find out
what God says. Sit and listen to the Word. Read the Word. Hear the preaching
of the Word. God says, My Word will not return
unto me void. It shall accomplish that whereunto
I have sent it, and that which pleases me. Hear the Word. Faith
comes by hearing the Word of God. That's right. And one day
as you listen, as you are faithful in listening to the Word of God,
one day that light will come on. I know from watching some
of you all. You sit and listen for months
and some of you years, and suddenly there's a changed countenance
and expression. I see what he's saying. I understand. That's right. And
here's the fifth thing, and here's where that comes in. The word
preached is made effectual by the Spirit of God. That's who
makes it effectual, the Spirit of God. I know we often say,
well, if you go and hear Brother Mahan, he makes everything so
plain. I've had people say that, and
I want to. simple and as plain as scriptural
as I possibly can. Like one little boy over in North
Carolina, I use a lot of illustrations in my messages and I was preaching
over in North Carolina and I told some stories and preached, you
know, the gospel. He went home and told his dad,
he said, I kind of like that preacher. And his dad said, why?
He said, well, he'll preach a while and then he'll tell you something. He loved those stories. He could
put up with the preaching to get to the stories, you know.
Simple. But let me tell you something.
Impossible, impossible to understand the mysteries of the grace of
God apart from the Spirit of God. We'll get it all wrong. In other words, Paul said in
1 Corinthians, he said, I have not seen ear hath not heard,
neither hath it entered the heart of men, the things God has prepared
for them that love Him, but He has revealed them unto us by
His Spirit." He said the princes of this world did not know who
Christ Jesus was or they wouldn't have crucified Him. But we know
who He is. Like He said to Peter one day,
He said, whom do you say that I am? And Peter said, you're
the Christ. You're the Christ. You're the
Messiah. You're the Redeemer promised throughout the whole
Old Testament. You're the Son of God. He said,
Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah. Flesh and blood didn't
reveal that to you. My Father revealed it to you.
And that's what I pray, that the Father will be pleased to
reveal to you and me his mercies in Christ Jesus. Now, our preaching
What I'm doing here on Sunday and Wednesday and these worship
services and what I did a few minutes ago on television, but
now for almost 18 years, these tapes that go out, our missionary
activities are for one purpose. You know what that is? My purpose
is not to make you religious. God deliver you from that. There's
enough of that in the world. Phony religion. superficial religion. We don't need any more of that.
We don't need any more show or entertainment in the name of
God. I'm not trying to make you religious. I'm not trying to
enforce the laws of morality. I'm not trying to put the abortionists
out of business or the pornographers or anybody else out of business.
They've been in business since the fall of Maine. I'd like to
discourage them, mind you. I have some principles and convictions
about it. But I'm not trying to enforce
the laws of morality. And I'm not trying to convert
you to my doctrine. I'm not trying to convert you,
I'm not trying to make a Calvinist out of you. Not at all. I'm not trying to build a church.
I'm not trying to build a denomination. You know what the one aim and
desire of my heart is that you might know God in Christ Jesus. That's eternal life. Our Lord
prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. He said, Father, you've given
me power over all flesh, that I should give eternal life to
as many as thou hast given me. And this is life eternal, that
they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ to
whom thou hast sent. That's my desire, you to know
God. Know God. And I'll tell you,
if a man, a woman, boy or girl ever comes to know God, in Christ. It'll regulate their lives. It'll
regulate their convictions and principles if they know God in
Christ. That's what Paul said to the church at Galatia. He
said, I travail to Christ be formed in you. If Christ is ever
enthroned in your heart, your life will be what it ought to
be. It won't be all you want it to be. But by the grace of
God, you'll grow in grace and in the knowledge of Christ Jesus.
Oh, that Oh, that we may come to know Him. Come to know Him. Well, let me show you these four
things now in 2 Timothy that reveal what I'm trying to say
as clearly as anything that I've found. In 2 Timothy 1, verse
8, now Paul was in prison. Paul was in prison. He knew he
was going to be martyred. He was going to die. And he writes
to this young man, Timothy, this is his, he calls him my son.
He wasn't Paul's natural son. He was his son in the faith,
in the ministry. And he says to him in verse 8,
now Timothy, be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our
Lord, the gospel. Don't be ashamed of the gospel.
You won't be. nor of me his prisoner." Don't
be ashamed of those who preach the gospel, those who suffer
for the sake of the gospel, those who are imprisoned for the gospel's
sake. I'm the prisoner of Christ. Notice he didn't say I'm the
prisoner of Rome, he said I'm his prisoner. Now watch, "...but
be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the
power of God." You be ready to pay the price for what you believe.
Now verse 9, the power of God, who has saved us and called us
with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to
his own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus. That's where I'm coming to, see.
You see, God's purpose and grace, it was given us in Christ, when?
Before the world began. God's purpose and program is
on schedule. God declares the end from the
beginning. God never learns anything. He
knows all things. God's not surprised. He's not taken by surprise. God
never learns anything nor forgets anything. He knows all things. And it says here that this grace,
this purpose, this purpose and grace in Christ was given to
us before the world began. Now what's this? It's his purpose.
His purpose. We're called according to his
purpose. He works all things after the counsel of his own
will. And it's his purpose was given to us. It's given to us.
We don't earn it. It's given to us. And it's given
to us before the world began. But what's this? It's in Christ
Jesus. That, Bob, is what I'm trying
to say. It's not in the church. It's not in the water. It's not
in the sacraments they call them, it's in Christ Jesus. That's
where God's purposes and God's decrees and God's eternal will
and that which is going to take place is in Christ Jesus. All in him. He says he's going
to, in the dispensation of the fullness of time, he's going
to gather together in one all things which are in Christ Jesus. That's where I want to be, in
Christ Jesus. All right, secondly, look down at verse 13. He says,
Timothy, hold fast the form of sound words. What's this sound
words? It's sound doctrine. Hold fast. Now, brethren, we receive a little
static. I was preaching down in Louisville
one time years ago, years and years ago. And Dr. Magruder had an office in the
Madrid building in Louisville, up on the 6th, 7th floor or somewhere
up there. And he finished his work that
day and he was coming over to the service to hear me preach. And he got on the elevator and
about 5.30 or 6 o'clock in the evening, After he'd finished the day's
work, he got on the elevator and there was a man already on
the elevator. And he was already on something
else too, because he was really reeling, Dr. Magruder said. He
knew him, he was a businessman, but he'd already been tapping
the bottle. And Dr. Magruder got on the elevator,
doors closed, and the man said, Hello, Brother Magruder. And
Magruder said, how are you Mr. so-and-so? He said, where are
you going doctor, Magruder? He said, I'm going to church.
Oh, you're going to church. Who are you going to hear preach?
He said, a fellow named Mahan from Iceland. He said, I know
him. I used to live in Iceland. I
know him. He's that fellow that preaches
about the collected ones. I hope I'm one of those collected
ones. Well, now let me tell you something.
I do. They're elected, and they'll
be collected too. God is sovereign. That's a sound
word. God did elect the people, and
Christ died for them. And the Holy Spirit calls them,
and they will persevere. And that's essential because
of who God is and who we are. Because God's almighty and we're
in the dust, sinners. You hold fast those sound words.
Now wait a minute, there's another word here, now watch it. You
hold fast those sound words which you've heard of me, but you hold
them in faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus. Oh, how important
this is. You hold fast these sound words
in faith, in believing Christ, but in love, in loving Christ
and loving people. I tell you, love without truth
is wildfire. I don't want love without truth.
It's hypocrisy. But let me tell you something.
Truth without love is dead and cold and lifeless. That's right. You say, Brother Rand, do you
run into a lot of people who believe the doctrines? Yeah,
I sure do. I run into more people who believe
the doctrines than who believe in love. I run into a whole lot
more truth than I do love. That's exactly right. If you read the book of 2 John,
these are two words that John uses over and over again, truth
and love, truth and love, truth and love. They go together. And this truth and love. There
are two critical points in Peter's life. Two critical points. When
our Lord was going to the cross, he said to Peter, you're going
to deny me, but I prayed for you that your faith fail not. Your faith. Believe me. You're
going through some crisis, some troubles, some deep water. But you keep believing. You believe
on me. You believe on me. But then he
sat him down. There was another critical point
in his life when he quit the ministry. Remember when he went
fishing? And the Lord called him in from the sea and sat him
down by a fire. And he said, now Peter, do you
love me? He asked him that three times.
Do you love me? Then you feed my sheep. And I
say these are the critical areas in my life and your life. Do
I believe and do I love Christ? That's it. And this faith that
saves and this love that keeps is in Christ Jesus. Quickly,
let me give you the third thing. 2 Timothy 2, verse 1. Watch this. My son, the old warrior is talking
to the young soldier. Is he a soldier? Look at verse
3. Thou therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
A good soldier. Thou therefore, my son, be strong,
be courageous in the grace that's in Christ Jesus. You know there
are a lot of things I wouldn't waste my time arguing about.
There are a lot of peculiarities about religion that are just
not worth the time. And people love to fence about
these things. They love to dub this. They love
to get on something they don't know anything about and everybody
else knows less, you know, and argue about it and debate it.
But let me tell you where the grace of God and the truth of
God and the love of God exists, and that's in Christ Jesus. And
I love to preach Christ. I love to talk about Christ.
And if you stay on that subject, you avoid debates and arguments
in religion. And that's where he tells Timothy
to be strong. Verse 2, and this is what we're
trying to do. The things that you've heard
of me among many witnesses, the same cometh out of faithful men
able to teach others. That's what I'm trying to do
here. We've got three of our young men out preaching today
from this church besides the others who are pastoring all
over the country. Commit this gospel of Christ
to faithful men, that they may go and teach others. And you
endure hardness as a good soldier, and verse 4, no man that wore
it entangleth himself with the affairs of this life. Now, if
you're going to get in the ministry, get in the ministry. Thirteenth
Street Baptist Church is going to be in the ministry of Jesus
Christ and the grace of God. Get in the ministry of Jesus
Christ. and don't become entangled in all of the business and affairs
of this world. Keep the gospel as your issue,
the gospel. All right, the last thing down
here in 2 Timothy 2, verse 7. It's in Christ Jesus, the grace
in Christ. Now watch this, verse 7. Now
consider what I say, consider what I've been saying about the
gospel and all these other things, and the Lord give you understanding
in all things. But I don't think that understanding
is going to come overnight. No, we're learners. Disciples
are learners. And I tell you, spiritual truth
is learned slowly. Actually, in most secular things,
the more time you give to your book, the more quickly you'll
learn. That's right. The more time you give, to your
studies and to your books and to your subject, the more quickly
you'll learn. You'll learn, learn, learn as
you apply yourself and burn, as they say, that midnight oil.
But these spiritual truths do not come that way. They come
as God is pleased to reveal them, and most of the time He reveals
them in an experience. And let's just don't get in a
hurry. The Bible keeps saying, wait on the Lord. Apostle Paul
was over 40 years old when God redeemed him, when God met him
on the road to Damascus, 40 years old. Some of you were older than
that when God revealed the Gospel to you. But all these past experiences,
God builds on these things. You learn by experience as the
Spirit of God reveals the Word to you. I don't go for this saying,
if a person's not converted in their teens, they won't be. That's
a bunch of foolishness. Somebody invented that. That's
not the word of God. God will meet a man and reveal
the gospel to him when he pleases. Year by year. I'm 65 years old
and I'm still finding out things I never knew existed in this
book. Aren't you? Learning. And I'm like John Newton. If I hadn't loved Christ before,
I wouldn't start today. I'm not too old to love Christ. Don't you agree with that? Isn't
that alright? I encourage anyone here, I don't
care what your age is, that background, if you're one of God's own, is
all in His providence. He brought you this far, He brought
you this way. Now you just remember, now look
at verse 8, and you remember that Jesus Christ of the seed
of David, He's God-man, was raised from the dead according to my
gospel, and verse 9, I suffer trouble, I suffer trouble as
an evildoer, even under bonds, but the Word of God's not bound.
You can shut the preacher up, but you can't shut up the Bible.
I asked a man one time, I said, how many preachers in your town
preach in the gospel of God's grace? He said, I don't know
of any. I said, I do. I know several. I know lots of
them. Abel's preaching the gospel.
The Bible says he's dead, yet he speaketh. Moses is preaching
the gospel right now. Here it is. Right here in our
town. In everybody's home. In every
motel room, Moses is preaching the gospel. It says in, you know,
when the man in hell said, send Lazarus back, he said, they have
Moses and the prophets. They have the Bible. That's God's
preacher. Isaiah is preaching right here
in Ashland. Here it is. Isn't that right? Matthew, Mark,
Luke and John. The Word of God is not bound.
The Word of God does not depend upon a human estimate, does it? He uses human estimates, but
God will speak where He pleases. I'd rather a man read the Bible
and listen to me. I'll try to help him with it,
but I'd rather him read the Word. Therefore, look, now quit, I
endure all things, whatever it may be, for the elect's sake.
that they may obtain the salvation. Don't separate it, which is in
Christ Jesus with eternal glory. That's where it is. That's where
it is. Everything God has for a sinner
is in Christ Jesus. His purpose and grace given us
in Christ. That faith and love that brings
us to union with Christ is in Christ. That grace in which we
are to be strong and unmoving unbending, and that grace of
God is in Christ Jesus. And I endure whatever we endure
for the sake of God's elect, that they may come to a knowledge
of that redemption which is in Christ Jesus. Can't magnify His
grace enough, can we? All right, let's turn to a closing
hymn, and we've selected hymn number 32. Hymn number 32, blessed
be the name, hymn number 32.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
