Now let's open our Bibles again
to the 17th chapter of John. I brought the introduction to
this message this morning, and I plan to bring another message
from this chapter this evening, John 17. Let me read a few verses. These words spake Jesus, and
lifted up his eyes to heaven. And he said, Father, the hour
is come. Glorify thy son, that thy son
also may glorify thee. As thou hast given him power
over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many
as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal. that
they might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ whom
thou hast sent." Now a man could preach from this chapter the
rest of his life, and he would never fathom the depth and the
height and the width and the fullness of its treasures and
its riches. And the Lord talks about so many,
many, many things in this 17th chapter of John. But principally,
He talks about five things that the Father gave to Him, which
He gives to His people. Five things which the Father
gave to Him in order that they might, through Him, be given
to His people. And here's the first one that
he mentions in verse 2. Thou hast given him power over
all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou
hast given him. Now, my friends, usually when
we read this verse of Scripture, about as deep as we ever go is
this, that the Lord Jesus has power to save whom he will, and
that's true. There's a scripture over here
in John 5, verse 21, which declares the Lord Jesus is speaking here.
As the Father raiseth up the dead and quickeneth them, even
so the Son quickeneth whom He will. And we who believe in what
we call sovereign grace and salvations of the Lord, we use these verses
quite a bit to to emphasize the fact that the Lord is sovereign
in salvation. If he's pleased to save one,
he'll save it. If he's pleased to save another,
he will. If he's pleased to pass by someone, he will. But there's
something here, and I tremble to approach it. I know so little
about it. But there's something here so
vast and so magnificent and so important
for us to know and to realize and to believe and enter into.
Now, two things are clear here. And the first thing is this,
that the Father, and I don't understand, don't claim to understand
and be able to explain the Trinity. I know that the Lord our God
is one God. Here, O Israel, the Lord thy
God is one God. And yet over and over in the
scriptures, we see this taught, that there are three that bear
record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost.
And when God made man, he said, let us make man in our image. And then he said to Isaiah, who
will go for us? And then our Lord Jesus, he said,
as the Father sent me, even so send I you. And he said again,
I will pray the Father and he will send you the Holy Spirit.
And our Lord Jesus Christ, they said, well, show us the Father.
He said, he that has seen me has seen the Father. But God is three in one. And
in an eternal covenant of mercy before the world began, called
an everlasting covenant, an everlasting covenant, the Father in that
covenant of grace and mercy, gave the Son of people. And the
Son assumed the responsibility for those people and assumed
the responsibility to redeem those people. And the Holy Spirit,
in that covenant of grace, took upon Himself the responsibility
of calling them to Christ, bringing them to Christ. Now that's so.
And the Lord Jesus said that, that all that my Father gave
me will come to me. And he talked about the brethren
which the Father gave him. And Paul said we were chosen
in Christ before the foundation of the world. God hath from the
beginning chosen you to salvation. Known unto God all his works
from the beginning. So that's clear, that the Father hath given
the Son of people. Now this is clear. Because he
said that I'll give eternal life to as many as you've given. This
is clear. That the Father had given to
the Son universal authority. In that covenant, in that council
of eternity, the Father turned this universe over to Christ. He turned the universe. He gave
him all authority. You know, Christ said, all authority
is given unto me in heaven and earth. Go ye therefore and preach
the gospel. I have all power over all flesh. The Father hath
given to the Son universal, absolute authority. He said, over all
flesh. We're talking about over all
flesh, from the first creature that was moved on this earth
to the last creature that shall be disposed of. He has complete,
absolute, total control and authority over all flesh, all creatures,
and all things. Now that's so. That's what this
is saying. And then thirdly, the object
of that transaction, the object of that covenant, and the object
of that authority is that he might, not might as a possibility,
but that he might be able to give eternal life, eternal glory
to these people whom God gave him in the covenant. Are you
with me? Now, this is so important. Now then, no man who knows anything
about the Bible, no man who has any awareness of the scriptures
or any understanding of the scriptures will question the absolute sovereignty
of God Almighty. God is God now. Let God be God
and every man alive. Now, there's nobody here that
knows anything about the scriptures that will question the right
of God to do what He will with His own. Is that right? The right
of God. God, He said, can I not do with
my own what I will? He said, none can stay in my
hand or say unto me or question me what doest thou. God is absolutely,
immutably, unchangeably, infinitely sovereign. And then no one who
knows anything about this Bible will question the fact that God
has determined from all eternity to have a new heaven and new
earth, populated by a holy people, a redeemed people, all of whom
will be like his son. But now this is what he's telling
us here. In order for God in his sovereignty, now stay with
me. Remember, and this is something we'll see in a few moments. Almighty
God, an absolute God, is absolutely holy, righteous, just, unbending,
unmoving in his purity. His eyes are too holy to look
on evil. He said to Moses, he said, no
man can look on me and live. He dwells in a light to which
no man can approach unto. God, your sins have separated
you and God. God as God, as an absolute, eternal,
immutable, holy, infinite, invisible God of holiness and righteousness. can't have anything to do with
people in sin. And God, knowing that, for He
knows all things, and God with that on the program, God in order
to preserve the world, God in order to let the world continue
as a creation, God in order to have a people, a new heaven and
a new earth, God, for His glory, in order to accomplish this covenant
of grace, has taken the whole world, the whole universe, all
flesh, all creatures, all actions, all their beings, from the very
beginning, out from under. Now stay with me. He has taken
this whole creation out from under the immediate rule of God
as God, as absolute God. Are you with me? He has taken,
good thing for you He did, He has taken this whole creation,
His creation, out from under, out from under the immediate
rule of having anything to do with God as an absolute holy
God, And He has placed this creation under the authority and government
of a mediator. That's what I'm saying. Of a
mediator, of a surety. I can show you that in Isaiah
9, 6. If you're with me, you turn over
there, and if you're not with me, you sure ought to catch up,
because this is so important. You see, when the angels fell,
When the angels sinned, the angels which kept not their first estate,
that was it. They had no charity. They had
no mediator. Charlie, you see that? They were
immediately reserved in everlasting chains in darkness unto that
great day. But even they come under the
authority of this Christ. In Isaiah 9 verse 6, listen,
unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government,
the government, the rule, the control, the authority shall
be on his shoulder, on his shoulder, and his name shall be called
Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father,
and the Prince of Peace. That's the Lord Jesus Christ. The running of the whole thing.
The control, the government, the rule. Back here in the Councils
of Eternity, before God ever created this world, before He
ever created this world, made man, He turned this whole thing
over to Christ. He put this whole thing in the
hands of the mediator, the surety. He took this whole thing out
from under. the immediate rule of an absolute
God as God. Far, far. And because of this,
and as a result of this gracious arrangement, a fallen race is
permitted to exist. A world in rebellion can't exist
if it's dealing with an absolute God. You see that, Paul? It can't
exist. It can't exist. It can't survive. God cannot permit evil to survive
in His presence. As a result of this gracious
arrangement, a sinful world is permitted to exist. A sinful
fallen race is permitted to continue. A sinful world coming into contact
with an absolute God must perish instantaneously. Must. Men as sinners continue to exist
under the virtue and the charitieship and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The Son of God, our Mediator,
stands between a holy, avenging God and Adam's race. And He's
always stood there. And when God moves Him, when
it's finished, all God sent Him to do, it's going to melt with
a fervent heat. That's right. That's right. When it's
all, when the last sheep of Christ is brought to him, the heavens
and the earth will melt with a fervent heat because it's going
to feel the judgment and wrath of God Almighty. Turn to 1 Corinthians
15. Now, you're going to understand
this a little better when I read this passage here. You understand
what I'm saying? Before I say something, repeat
this before I read this scripture in 1 Corinthians 15. In order
for God, and you see, this world doesn't understand, doesn't have
any conception of the holiness of God. Herman, even the holiness
people you used to be identified with, the holiness they're talking
about is not holiness. It's not holiness. We're talking
about that infinite, immaculate holiness of God. Perfection. And nothing imperfect can survive
in His presence. Absolute holiness. Holiness. No evil, no sin, no darkness. God is light, in Him there is
no darkness. Not a glimmer, no darkness. And
darkness can't survive. In Him there is no sin, and sin
can't survive. And so God Almighty, in a covenant
of mercy, took this whole thing and turned it over to Mediator on the promise that He'd give
them a holiness and a righteousness with God. Now look at 1 Corinthians
15. Now watch this. Verse 24. Then
come at the end. That's what I'm talking about. shall have delivered up the kingdom
to God." Who's He? That's Christ. When this thing's
wound up, the Lord Jesus Christ, having done all He came to do,
is going to deliver this kingdom up to the Father. Even the Father, that's who He's
going to deliver it up to. When He shall have put down all
rule and all authority and all power, for He must reign, and
He is reigning. He's reigning. Until Jesus Christ
is reigning. He has full of control, full
authority, full sovereignty over everything that riles or wriggles,
as Barney used to say. Until he put all enemies under
his feet. The last enemy that he'll destroy
is death. For he hath put all things under
his feet. Who's that talking about? The
Father hath put all things under the Son's feet. That's who put
him there. When he saith all things are
put unto him, it's manifest that he is accepted who put all things
unto him. Isn't that clear? Not the Father. The Father turned everything
over to Christ. You see this little peanut, Jesus.
This is the reason I'm alarmed and disturbed, these preachers.
These preachers don't know what they're saying. They don't know
nothing. This is why I'm so alarmed. These whoop-de-doo fellas, they
don't know what's going on. They don't know what went on.
They don't know what's going on. They don't know what's going
to go on. They don't know anything about this. Verse 28, "...and
when all things shall be subdued unto Christ, then shall the Son
also Himself be subject unto him that put all things under
him, that God may be all and in all." Can you see that? That's glorious. As a result
of this gracious arrangement, even if there's anybody here
tonight that's not a believer in Christ, not subject to Christ,
the very fact that you're left to stand, that you hadn't felt
Holy wrath of God is because of that arrangement, that covenant. That's the reason I'm saying
that there's a sense in which Christ's death is particular.
There's another sense in which it's universal. He bought the
world. It's his. You're his to dispose of as he
pleases. You're his. That dog out in your
backyard belongs to him. I see people dedicating their
babies to God. Don't waste your time. They're
his anyhow. They're here. Everything's here.
You're here. And you just breathe by His permission. And you see
the whole object of this, and I just feel like reading that
again. Verse 24, 1 Corinthians 15, then come at the end. That's
what this saying's all leading up to, the end. When He shall
have delivered up the kingdom to the Father. He's not going
to lose a one. All that my Father gives me will
come to me. I'm going to raise Him up. Deliver everything the
Father gave Him, the covenant to accomplish, He's going to
accomplish. Wrap it up, bring it home. He'll deliver up the kingdom
to the Father, even the Father, to God, even the Father. When
He shall have put down all, when He's going to put down all rule,
all authority, all rebellion. That's the reason people say,
you know, they're always saying, well, let Jesus be Lord. Uh-uh.
He is Lord. And every knee is going to bow,
and every tongue is going to confess that he's Lord. He's
going to put down all rule, all authority, and all power. But
he must reign. He does reign. He's not going
to reign. He's always reigned. This has always been his. He'll
reign until he puts every enemy under his feet. The last enemy
will be any form of death, any form of death. For he hath put
all things under his feet. But when he sayeth all things
are put under his feet, it's manifest that he's accepted which
did put all things under him. And when all things shall be
subdued unto him. That's a glad, what a day that
will be. That's what you've been saying. Then shall the Son also himself
be subject unto him that put all things unto him. Do you see
that? Go back to the text now, John
17. That's the thing I wanted you to see so strongly. The Lord Jesus praying here in
this high priestly prayer, He said, Father, Thou hast given
Me, when? From all eternity. Thou hast
given Him what? Power, authority, reign. He rules, He reigns over all
flesh. Jesus reigns over His church.
Jesus reigns over Jerusalem. Jesus reigns over Christians.
Jesus reigns over the whole universe and everything that moves, all
authority, over all flesh. What's the purpose of all this?
In order that He might give eternal life to as many as thou hast
given Him. Here the United States of America,
back hundreds of years ago, A land inhabited by savages, Indians,
wild men, pagans even. Fellas got some ships and came
over here. And they established some kind
of government and so forth. And this land, this civilization
or whatever you call it, crept across this land. And when they
came, they brought these books with them. And this land became
an inhabited land of folks with some understanding of God through
the years. And why was all this stuff? People
here, they were pagan and wild. And these folks landed. Folks
learned to clean up, straighten up, build. The land was established,
and this whole big island came under the dispensation of God's
grace. Why? To call out His people. That's the reason. That's what
this is all about. You multiply that by everything
that's ever happened in this world, it's in order that He
might give eternal life to His manythousands. And see, verse
3 says this eternal life is not just a a belief in some doctrine. It's not just an hour of decision
or a trip down the aisle to make you accept Jesus as your personal
Savior. This eternal life is to know
God. And that's what we're going to
get into now in the next verse there. He said, I have glorified
thee on this earth. I have finished the work you
gave me today. Now these people which the Father
gave him, you see, turned this whole thing over to Christ. But
the Lord cannot save by sleight of hand or hook or crook. He's
got to save by establishing and performing and perfecting for
these people a righteousness and acceptance with the Father.
And so that's what he's saying here, I finished the work you
gave me to do. Now Jesus Christ is the only
one born of woman who can truthfully say, I finished the work God
gave me to do. And here's the thing, now watch
this is emphasized here. He said, I finished the work.
There are two things here, two or three things. First of all,
he said, I finished it. I fully and completely finished
it. There's nothing to be added to
whatever this work is. And the work is given over here
in Romans 5.19. Listen to this in Romans 5.19.
Alright, it says, "...by one man's disobedience the many were
made sinners." That's our identification with Adam. "...So by the obedience
of one shall many be made righteous." In other words, the Lord Jesus
Christ came down here and did what the first Adam failed to
do. He perfectly obeyed God. He perfectly loved God. He perfectly
honored God. He finished this work God gave
him to do. Now, look at Hebrews 10. Hebrews
chapter 10. That's the redemption of our
souls. That's a righteousness which
He perfected and imputed to us. Now watch this. In Hebrews chapter
10, He says in verse 7, then said, I come. I come. In the volume of the book, it's
written of me to do thy will, O God. Above, when he said, sacrifice
and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin, thy wouldest
not neither had pleasure therein which are offered by the law.
Those were the types and patterns. They never satisfied God's holiness.
They didn't redeem the people who offered them. These sacrifices
didn't take away sin or they would cease to have been offered.
But then he said, Lo, I come, the Lord Jesus said, I come,
O God, to do thy will. And he takes away the first,
that is, the first tabernacle, the first priesthood, the first
sacrifice, the first covenant, that he may establish the second,
by the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body
of Jesus Christ once for all. Every priest back there stood
daily ministering, often, oftentimes, the same sacrifices which can
never take away sin, but this man, After he'd offered one sacrifice
for sin forever, sat down on the right hand of God. It's finished. So look back at
the text. Now, are you with me? I'm going
back over that first part, but I'm going to take it in verse
4. He said, I've glorified thee on this earth. As a mediator,
as a surety, this thing turned over. He came to this earth.
And the Father gave him a work to do. Now, he didn't take this
work. on himself, God the Father gave it to him. Turn to Hebrews
5. I'll show you this right here. Hebrews chapter 5. Every word
he speaks is so vital, so necessary, so important. In verse 4, no
man takes this honor unto himself, but he is called of God, as was
Aaron the high priest. So also Christ glorified not
himself to be made a high priest, but he that said unto him, Thou
art my son today, have I begotten thee. He designated him for this
work. He designated. So the Lord Jesus
said, the work of redemption, a perfect righteousness for us,
the work of redemption, a perfect sacrifice for us, the work of
putting away sin, a perfect sin offering for us, which he accomplished,
completed, went back to glory. He said, it's finished. The hymn
writer put it this way. The voice of love and mercy sounds
aloud from Calvary. See, it tears the rocks asunder,
shakes the earth and veils the sea. It's finished. Finished
all the types and shadows of the ceremonial law. Finished
all that God has promised. Death and hell no more shall
all. It's finished. Justice from her awful station
bars the sinner's peace no more. Justice views with approbation.
what the Savior did, and boy, it's finished. Here the Lord
Himself declaring, all is done He came to do. Sinners who for
sin despaired, this is good news for you, it's finished. It's
finished, all is over. Yes, the cup of wrath is drained. In the gospel truth discovered,
Christ the victory hath obtained. It's finished. All right, now
notice the third thing. And here's something that Brother
Barnard brought out in an article years ago. God was in Christ
reconciling the world to himself. Then he says, I come, Paul says,
an ambassador crying, be ye reconciled to God. In other words, the Savior
enabled God to be just and justify and reconcile us to God. And
there's a work which he accomplished and finished in redeeming us. I have a righteousness, I have
a perfect sin offering. But I've got to know God and
believe God myself. So Christ said in verse 6, I
have manifested thy name unto the man which you gave me. Thine
they were, and thou gavest them me, and they've kept there thy
word." And verse 8, I've given them the words that you gave
me, and they have received them. My friends, in this part of the
prayer, our Lord begins to speak of His sheep, His elect, directly
of the disciples and indirectly of all men whom He redeems. Now in verse 9, he said, I pray
for them, I pray not for the world, I pray for them which
thou hast given me. In verse 11, he said, now I am
no more in the world, but these are in the world. Holy Father,
I keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me.
Verse 12, while I was with them in the world, I kept those that
thou gavest me, I kept. Verse 24, Father, I will that
those whom thou hast given me be with me where I am. The Father
gave the Son of people. And the Son came down here not
only justified these people and redeemed them and gave them a
righteousness, but He revealed God to them. He revealed God
to them. They actually, the Lord Jesus
Christ actually revealed God to those believers. He manifested
the name of God to them. Turn to 1 John chapter 5. 1 John
chapter 5. 1 John 5. And my generation, my
generation is ignorant of God. I hear them talking about God,
but the God they're talking about is not the God of the Bible.
And they're ignorant of the character of God, they're ignorant of the
sin of men, they're ignorant of the personal work of Christ.
They're ignorant of these things. It says in 1 John 5.20, And we
know that the Son of God is come, into this world, and hath given
us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and
we're in him that is true, even in his Son, Jesus Christ, and
this is the true God, and this is eternal life." Our Lord Jesus
Christ has a threefold office, a threefold office. He is prophet,
priest, and king. In the Old Testament, he had
men who represented him and pictured him in this office where Moses
was a prophet, but Moses was not a priest. Aaron was a priest,
high priest. Aaron went into the Holy of Holies
with the linen clothes on and took the blood sacrifice, sprinkled
it on the mercy seat, but Aaron was not a prophet. David was
a king and ruled over Israel, but David was neither prophet
nor priest. But the Lord Jesus Christ came
into this world both as prophet, priest, and king. He's the king
who has absolute authority and rule. He's the priest who offered
up the perfect, acceptable sacrifice. And he is the prophet by whom
and through whom men come to know God. If you would know God,
you've got to know Christ. If you hear from God, you've
got to hear from Christ. And that's what he's saying here.
He said, I've manifested, I've revealed, I've made known your
name. And I don't have the time tonight
to go into all that this word name implies. But you turn to
Romans 10, 13 for a moment. Romans 10, 13. Now, I hear every
preacher from the North Pole to the South Pole, quoting this
Romans 10, 13. In a very flippant, glib way,
they just said, well, whosoever shall call on the name of the
Lord shall be saved. No truer word was ever spoken. That's
so. Any man in his desperation, any
man in his guilt, any man in his sin, any man in his hopelessness
and helplessness and guilt who calls not on a God, not on any
God, not on any idea of God, but on the actual name of the
living God shall be saved. But there's where this one word
is what the whole promise hinges on. It's not on the man, it's
not on the call, it's on the name. For there is none other
name unto heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved,
but, O, what this name encompasses! Thou shalt call his name Jesus,
he shall save his people from this sin. Behold, the Lord himself
shall give you a sign, a virgin shall conceive and bring forth
a son, and thou shalt call his name Emmanuel, God with us."
And so I'm saying this, if anybody's out here tonight who's hopeless,
helpless, unable, guilty, sinner, vile, wicked, wretched, going
to hell, knows it. You just don't say, Lord, save
me. The thief on the cross looked at him and said, you're guiltless,
you have no sin, you're the Lord, you have a kingdom, you're not
going to stay dead, you're coming into that kingdom, He called
on the name of the Lord, but that name of the Lord included
all of the glories of God and the character of God. The name
is the character of God. That's what I'm trying to say.
And what this generation just says, if you call on Jesus, you'll
be saved. But what's Jesus? Tell me about
it. Who is this Jesus? Who is this
Jesus? And that's what this is saying
in John 17. I manifested your name, who you
are, who you are, who you are. You gave me your words as the
prophet, verse 8, I've given to them the words that you gave
me. Your words, the words he said I speak, they're not my
words, they're words of him that sent me. And I've given it to
them, that they have believed. They have believed. Oh my, now
verse 22, we'll close it up. And the glory which you gave
me, I've given them. The glory which you gave me.
This is beyond my comprehension. I looked at this and I read Calvin
and Gill and everybody I knew to read. Nobody really satisfied
my heart on these things. I don't know, maybe sometimes
Preachers and writers and theologians getting theology too much and
miss the real person, the beauty, the experience of it all. But
I know this. This glory here is not the glory
of His deity. I know that. Because He said,
glorify me with the glory which I had with you before the world
was. You're not going to participate in that. You're not God and you're
not going to be God. He says the Word became flesh
and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten
of the Father. And then it's not His mediatorial
glory because it says that I've given Him a name which is above
every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow.
Things in heaven, earth, and under there. But what is this
glory? Well, number one, I go back to
the Old Testament and I see that it's His redemptive glory. His
redemptive glory. Moses says, Lord, show me your
glory. Show me your glory. And God said,
I'll be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I'll be merciful
to whom I will be merciful. In other words, that glory I
share with you. The glory of His mercy, His grace. The mercy of God just flows over
me, under me, and through me, and about me. The glory of His
mercy. It's the knowledge of the gospel
of His glory. My friends, I wish there's some
way that I could tell you what a gift God gave you when He gave
you a knowledge of the gospel. When you were in that religion,
in that form, in that ceremony, ritualism, fundamentalism, You
didn't know the gospel of His glory. You talked about a gospel,
but it was a gospel, a fleshly gospel, a human gospel, a works
gospel. Do you know that by His grace,
if you've entered into His saving grace, that you've come to learn
and appreciate and love and understand the gospel of His glory, the
gospel which gives Him all the glory? The glory, the praise,
the gospel that can really save my soul. He said, you've given
me the glory and I've given it to them. The glory, the gospel
of His glory. Christ is the gospel of His glory
and He's given that to us. And then thirdly, it's the glory
of His likeness. He said, now we're sons of God
and it does not, it hasn't even entered our minds what we're
going to be. But when He comes, we're going to be like Him. Like
Him. In corruption, immortal, power,
glory, His likeness. You talk about beauty. You talk
about perfection. You talk about strength. You
talk about brilliance. You talk about genius. All the
glory of His likeness. And then another glory that He's
given us which was given to Christ. Let me read it to you. I reckon
that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared
with the glory which shall be revealed in us. Heavenly glory. Heavenly glory. It's His redemptive
glory. It's the gospel of His glory.
And don't take that lightly. My soul to know the gospel of
His glory. No salvation without it. It's
the power of God unto redemption. It's the glory of His likeness,
and it's the glory of His heaven. That's the reason I say a man
can stay in John 17 the rest of his life. Way back before
this thing ever started, the Father turned it all over to
the Son, put it in the hands of a mediator, under His mediatorial
kingdom, His mediatorial kingdom, in order that He might have a
new heaven and a new earth, and redeem a people. And the Lord
assumed that responsibility. He gave him a work to do. He
came down into this world. He walked on this earth in perfection,
but that cross had died in agony. The burden rose again, went to
glory, and sat down. And through that glorious gospel,
he reveals to you, to you, to you, to you, to you, who God
is, who God is. It brings you to love Him, and
believe Him, and trust Him, and rest in Him. And when He finishes
it, He's going to rack it all up, and He's going to turn that
kingdom over to the Father. Here it is. Where's Paul? He's
right there. Where's Marcella? She's right
here, Father. I brought back every one you
gave me, every sheep. I subdued every enemy. I conquered
every enemy. He delivered it up to the Father.
Oh, I tell you. And then He says, I'm going to
give them that glory that you gave me. I tell you, this thing
is what I've been trying to say for these years, this thing is
bigger than a trip down that aisle. Take that preacher's hand.
This thing is as big as God's. And nobody could do it but my
Lord. And when He died on that cross, He said, it's finished.
Father, I've finished the work. gave me to do. Now, glorify me
with the glory which I had with Eve before the World War. And
I'm going to share in that glory. I'm just waiting for He calls
me up there. He calls me up there. And you know what I'm going to
do to get there? I'm going to fall at His feet. Just fall at
His feet, that mediator, that one who did it all. That's what
makes ridiculous all this thing about putting crowns on all these
different things. Whew! He missed it. We're going to fall at his feet.
It's time for him to be the glory. For he washed us from our sin
in his own blood and made us kings and priests unto God. That's
a glorious gospel. God has to reveal that. You know,
Mayor Richard, you didn't learn that reading somebody's book,
God has to reveal that. And I'm tired of people, and
this is what, I tell you, when you know this, it's what makes
that other stuff so sickening. This is being preached today.
When you know this, when you know the greatness and glory
and beauty and power and sufficiency and efficacy of this gospel,
it makes all that other, how do you support it? How do you
listen to it? Somebody says, well, I still go to church because
my young people like it. You couldn't listen to that stuff
if you ever hear this. Here. Can't stand it. It's a shame and disgrace to
talk about. Well, God wants to do it and
you won't let Him. He's gonna do it. It's finished. All right, I come lead us in
a hymn if you will.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
